Recommended Reading!
Cheng Man-ch'ing, student of Yang Ch'eng-fu, hoped that tai chi could play a vital role in the revival of China in the period following the Second World War. Ultimately, Cheng ended up migrating to the U.S. and undertaking a significant role in the transmission of tai chi to Westerners. This book presents the core of his advanced teaching, giving a detailed exposition of traditional principles (including meditation and medicine) and teaching techniques together with his own highly original set of new conceptual tools for working in the medium of movement.

A Classic Book--A Shame it's Out of Print
Michael Langford's "Master Guide to Photography" is one of the most comprehensive and nicely illustrated books on photography. It's a shame that the publisher has let this title go out of print--it should be updated and republished. Michael covers everything from camera basics to the history of photography to very advanced camera techniques and it's all presented in an interesting and aesthetically pleasing way. Time to reprint and expand it--but worth finding the original from a used dealer.

Plastic Scale Modeling - Advanced Techniques
John Alcorn's latest book is primarily aimed at those who wish to scratch build their models and it provides a wealth of practical information and photographs to aid the builder in that quest. There are articles about the models and detailed discussions techniques involved in building, along with a large number of photographs and drawings which clearly illustrate those techniques. The photographs are clear, well captioned and most are in color. Each of the these articles profiles and demonstrates the completed (and in process) models of a number of the best known and most accomplished scratch building modelers in the world at this time. It also provides at least two in depth articles which will benefit any scale modeler--Model Research and Photography and Finishing. These two topics alone justify any modeler buying this book and if used in assembling you modeling effort. I personally believe I could have saved much of the personal efforts I have made over the last 35 years in developing my skills, tools and techniques by having had, read and studied this book. As a dedicated, though not highly skilled, modeler, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, applaud John Alcorn's efforts and highly recommend this book to anyone seriously interested in scale modeling.

Masters of Deceit: The Story of Communism in America and How to Fight It

Hoover understood Communists, our latter day pod people
Joe McCarthy did America a great disservice in the early 1950's when his tactics for rooting communists out of American government positions were sucessfully ridiculed by Leftist aiders and abetors in our nations media. While mcCarthy has subsequently been proven to have been correct ("Venona Secrets", "the Haunted Wood", "the Sword and the Shield"), his name has become something of a smear word for any Leftist wishing to lampoon conservative values.

In this book, J. Edgar Hoover discusses the history of the ins and outs of Communist Party operations in the united States. It is of no minor significance that Hoover has been smeared by the religious Left in order to dilute his very prescient message. By linking Hoover as a possible sexual partner to his companion Clyde tolson the Left has managed to make Hoover appear a dishonest hypocrite who flits about in a tutu in his private moments. However, none of this should dilute Hoover's realization of Communism as a clear and present danger to the United states.

We can see the appropriateness of his vision today as we witness the hypocrisy of the political correctness movement in academia, the Leftist bias in the major media, and the virulent environmental extremism astride the land. Hoover spoke to all of the precursors of these conditions because they were fundamentally neccessary for a socialist government to seize control of America's government and business apparatus.

It's unfortunate that we have forgotten Hoover's positive contributions. It would be a good thing to revive his legacy, warts and all, to study the type of material he discusses in this evocative book.

Masterful Study of Slavery --Destroys Many Myths
John C. Inscoe is probably one of the most prolific scholars on Southern Appalachian History; Mountain Masters is in many ways the work that firmly planted him in the historiographic tradition of Western North Carolina. Mountain Masters relies on many primary sources (not just a wide variety of them, but a thorough use of them as well) to portray what slavery was really like in Western North Carolina through the Civil War. In opposition to many popular notions, in which slavery didn't exist or was marginal in Western North Carolina, John Inscoe revealed that Western North Carolina was not very different from the rest of the south in trading, selling, buying, and working slaves. Though the patterns of slavery were different in many cases, the institution was still very strong in the region and had a profound impact on the politics, society, and cultural values of the people of the mountains. This book ought to be read by every North Carolina scholar, every slavery scholar, and certainly by every scholar who studies the Southern Appalachians. It is beautifully written and engaging.

Nicolas Legat Heritage of a Ballet Master
Published in Hardcover by Princeton Book Co Pub (1978)
Authors: John Gregory and Andre Eglevsky
Amazon base price: $39.95
Used price: $37.15
Average review score:

The book was WONDERFUL!-a "must have" for balletomanes
Having been a very young part of Andre Eglevskys' world (my mother, and I when I was old enough, took class daily with his teacher Maria Nevelska..."spelled "Nevelskaya" before coming to America) at Carnegie hall where he came frequently for class. This book brings back with clarity the attitudes, the "Feel" of the times, the dedication and love for the art of ballet, not only in the person of Nicolas Legat but of every person lovingly and sometimes humorously described. The sketches and caricatures are priceless...and so accurate! The classes described at the end are very helpful esp. to a teacher, advanced student, or ballet historian. The section on "the secret of the pirouette"you will want to try, it was the way I was taught and it works perfectly, and the section on Class Music is very in-depth and wonderful. Artistry at this level needs to once again be our dedication to the many facets of ballet...not just performance, but a life! Worth every penny!

The Living Lineage of Soto Zen
From Shakyamuni Buddha through fifty three generations of successors to Koun Ejo, the lineage of Soto Zen Buddhism unfolds.

Each chapter centers on a pivotal exchange between a Zen ancestor and his successor. These exchanges, preserved and used as koans, represent the living transmission of awakened mind, presented by Keizan Zenji, co-founder with Dogen Zenji, of the Japanese Soto school.

Master Keizan's lucid commentaries and verses on each case render the succession accessible to the determined practitioner. This masterful collection, parallelling in importance the Shobogenzo of Dogen Zenji, remains a seminal text for all serious students of Zen.

The translation by Francis Dojun Cook is at once meticulous and vivid, embodying careful scholarship as well as the essence of the realization of these fifty three Zen ancestors.

Time spent with this book will richly reward the reader.
