The Castration
Published in Paperback by PublishAmerica, Inc. (10 July, 2002)
Authors: William A. Carey and St. John Barrett
Amazon base price: $19.95
Average review score:

Highest Praise for "The Castration" by Carey & Barrett
As a retired lawyer addicted to suspense novels with a legal orientation, I think The Castration, by Carey & Barrett, rivals the best of Meltzer and Grisham.

A winner!
Loved this book - a fascinating revelation of some of the inner workings of the Mafia although it is set in the charming area of Kennebunkport, Maine. It pulls you in and holds your interest almost immediately. The characters are well defined, and the locales well described so you can picture them in your mind's eye even if you have not visited there. The twist at the end wraps it up but leaves you wanting more. Thoroughly enjoyable reading but do not start at bedtime; you will be up all night!

A review from Shannon!
I saw SUE in Chicago last week. In this book I learned that SUE was named after Susan who found the fossils. Susan had a dog named Gypsy. They kept on digging up duck-billed dinosaurs. Sue's boned weighed 4 tons!! The Field Museum bought it for over eight million dollars! SUE is a T.rex. I think that SUE did fight with other dinosaurs. SUE is 67 million years old! I was happy to see SUE in Chicago and to read this book!

Sue
Dinosaurs are a hot topic right now...and A Dinosaur Named Sue: The Find of the Century really teaches young kids about the job of a paleontologist--in a positive light. SUE, the most complete T. rex fossil ever found, is an amazing discovery, both educationally AND on basis of interest, and children should definitely read all they can about this dinosaur. This book approaches SUE on the level of a 3rd grader, yet the language and subject matter are intelligient enough for a parent to find interesting--maybe even to learn from! I definitely did!

Federal Civil Rules Handbook : 2000 Edition
Published in Paperback by West Group (1999)
Authors: Steven J.D., William M. Janssen Baicker-Mckee and John B. Corr
Amazon base price: $60.00
Average review score:

Great Tool, BUT...
As of December, 2000, modifications were made to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure; therefore, those interested in purchasing the 2000 edition need to be careful of the new rules pertaining to discovery and evidence. Otherwise, this handbook is a great tool with annotations plus commentaries.

A Pro Se Must Read!
Every pro se litigant should own and use this valuable tool. It's a comparatively inexpensive, single-volume, user-friendly federal practice resource and a must-have for every practitioner and pro se litigant. The eighth edition is even more powerful than the 7th and includes the most recent revisions to the Federal Rules and newest case law interpreting and construing the rules. The authors' commentaries are priceless. The various citations are extremely beneficial. A law library isn't complete without a copy of Federal Civil Rules Handbook from West Group.

Foundations for Osteopathic Medicine
Published in Hardcover by Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins (15 January, 1997)
Authors: Robert C. Ward, John A. Jerome, John M., III Jones, Robert E. Kappler, Albert F. Kelso, Michael L. Kuchera, William A. Kuchera, Michael M. Patterson, Barbara A. Peterson, and Felix J. Rogers
Amazon base price: $120.00
Average review score:

Great for beginning and experienced osteopaths.
This is the long awaited basic textbook for osteopathic medicine. It is surprisingly complete, covering philosophy, history, research, and manipulative techniques. The beginning osteopathic student may find it most useful for its practical discussion on the techniques--high velocity, myofascial release, etc. I believe it is also helpful in standardizing our terminology, which will make it easier when taking board exams or talking with colleagues from other osteopathic schools. It includes contributors well known within the osteopathic community, including Michael and William Kuchera, Melicien Tettambel, Eileen DiGiovanna, and many others. As a family practice resident I frequently turn to this textbook first when I want to know more about how to treat a patient or when preparing lectures for students and housestaff.

The osteopathic manipulative therapy bible!
This text is actually required reading for most if not all osteopathic medical students. It is a 'textbook', however, and hence completely (sometimes exhaustively!) comprehensive. But it is easy to read so that anyone with an interest in OMT will get a methodic how-to for myriad techniques, also a thorough history of osteopathic medicine to boot! One of my OMT professors at the University of Health Sciences College of Osteopathic Medicine wrote or co-wrote a few of the chapters so of course, I think those are the best! If you are looking for an educational approach to learning manipulation and the reasons behind it, this is a valuable resouce.

Gee's Bend: The Women and Their Quilts

more than a coffee table book
The Quilts of Gee;s Bend is much more than a beautiful coffee table book. It is that, too, of course. The book is filled with social history of this small place near Selma, Alabama. I've been lucky enough to visit Gee's Bend and see the quilt-making process. The Whitney Museum exhibit must have been wonderful. Sunday Morning on CBS did a story on the exhibit. The quilters traveled to New York for the opening and entertained the guests with their singing. That's what Gee's Bend is like: A rich yet poor stop on the road where women made the best of what they had and turned out great art in the process.

A Must Have
I have seen the exhibition of the Gee's Bend quilts at the Whitney museum three times. The quilts of Gee's Bend are simple, graphic, and stunning. Although I own the smaller of the Gee's Bend quilt books and the video about the quiltmakers, I find that I want to know and see much more. I have thumbed through this book at the museum and am delighted that it is full of lush photographs of so many more quilts. At the top of my holiday list of things I must have, is this, the larger of the Gee's Bend quilt books.
