the heavily annotated Kama Sutra
This book came very highly recommended to me by a couple whose sexual bravado I respect. They went through all the positions, raving over each new plateau. So I got the book, of course. It was a good recommendation, but it requires patience to plow through some things that simply won't apply to you. If you have an erotic library or a lonely coffeetable, this book will not fail to do justice to either, but if you're looking for one definitive manual to begin with, look somewhere else. If you're looking for erotic art of eastern and Indian origin this is a good book to have, there's a voluminous sampling of it. The book is definitely better explored between lovers; it was written by lovers for that explicit purpose.

Biased erotica, mushy esoteria, nostalgic for Mystic sex
Looking at it now I realize we've evolved some as a culture less heterosexist. Now perhaps we are more aware of power and shape of female sexuality than we were then. Also it was easier to be accepting of stereotyping as some form of archetypal mandate of gender polarity than it is now. Again homosexuality and bisexuality seem now more normative (even if you are straight), so some of the gay bashing and other rigid gender typing imported from a superficial glance at sexual symbolism around the globe makes the book a little out of focus. Still for many of us, that God wants us to be sexy seems a sinful idea, then this little book will titillate us out of that ugly life-denying myth. So cheers for the effort even if the culture has moved into a wider and more sophisticated grasp of esoteric energy work and meditation than this book can possibly suggest. As a how-to the book is too superficial, and the esoteric meditations are not adequately reported as to become welcome guides on how to let divine energy catch afire in our lovemaking. The colorizing of some of the black and white line drawings definitely adds to the erotica appeal of the work, and it is as a mild piece of sacred sexuality that the work best serves, that is as entertainment rather than instruction.

Thoroughly engaging book
I bought this book for a class I was taking in college on human sexuality. It definitely presents a different take on normal sexual practices. I hadn't heard of the kundalini, or even the chakras, and other sacred sexual beliefs until I read this book. The author is long-winded and detailed, but that's to the benefit of people like me who are novices to Eastern philosophy. I read this book at length, and after my class, I gave it to my girlfriend, and we've enjoyed reading about some of the more uncommon sexual techniques described in detail (here's one: for deeper penetration, place a pillow underneath your or your partner's body during intercourse). The author also talks about the sacred aspect of sex, and how it can enhance your connection with your partner. Although this book isn't for everybody, if you have an open mind and are willing to try new ideas, you might enjoy this book.

Eye-opening but lacking in detail to a degree
First off, I'm far from an expert on 'sacred sex,' which is why I picked up this book. I was particularily interested in the ideas of channeling sexual energy, and also improving multiple orgasm and developing the ability to be multi-orgasmic (as a man).

I should also note that I'm not generally a spiritual person; I don't regularily practice anything in particular. At the same time I am interested in and familiar with full-body spiritual practices and the Hindu and Buddhist faiths.

The book highlights the Universal Tao practice of sexuality, rather than Tantric-like practices, and does a good job of briefly explaining it's importance and foundations. At the same time, I sometimes found myself wondering more about the practice in general and how sexuality fits into the overall picture.

The chapters you'd think the book would touch on most of all: being a multi-orgamic couple, were similarily written: thorough and informative, but lacking in details and guidance. I do have some experience with spirituality practices, and have developed a fair bit of body and energy awareness through other activies. I found that I was barely able to experience what and follow some of the directions the authors were suggesting.

The book is also widely targeted to both naive and experienced users. However, in this broad targeting, I feel the authors managed to reach none of the groups fully. The instruction and guidance I bought the book for (sacred sex practices, something probably generally practiced by highly sexually aware couples) could be sparse. The information was there and complete, but it seemed to skip a whole level of pre-information one would have to know. Then the authors would explain very simple things you'd expect highly sexual couples to know, like the function and location of the clitoris, for instance: this is information anyone looking into this level of sexual encounter should probably know already.

Finally, the main thrust of the book is connecting with your partner, not being multi-orgasmic. After chapter 3, the book focuses on sharing energy, developing love, and a number of other very positive and beneficial practices that I'm glad I read about. Certainly, the authors do readers a service in not just giving them techniques without explaining their power and application. At the same time, this broad-based overview leaves the entire book lacking.

On the whole, this is a good book. It'll open your eyes to some new sexuality concepts, and I'm sure that as I continue to practice these concepts I'll develop a fuller, more spiritual sexuality. At the same time, I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone with no experience in spiritual or body-based practices like yoga, pilates, tai chi, martial arts, etc.: I would think one would have to develop some body awareness and control before being able to undertake some of the exercises.

More detail, more step-by-step, and exercises to get readers to that point would've made this an excellent resource. More information on multiple orgasm and how exactly to get to the point where you can feel and channel energy are, to my mind, critical. As it is, the authors are off to a good start but suplementation is necessary.

One final point: the book does include a section on intercourse and thrusting. Although this is soemthing a lot of couples can probably innovate in on their own, it is noteworthy in that this is one of the few sexuality resources I've ever seen that touches on the actual act of intercourse and the variety of possibilities there.

REQUIRED READING!!!
We got this book after reading The Multi-Orgasmic Man. It should be required reading for all lovers and a making love manual for teaching in schools. The authors provide details and step-by-step procedures for equalizing the sexual differences between men and women. It teaches anyone how to become multi-orgasmic and have a vastly richer, healthier, and more satisfying sex life.

Yes it does work for anyone without any previous training
I believe the Greek reviewer clearly missed the purpose of the book and does a great disservice to the authors and the public by claiming it is a "wish list, and not a true guide." It is absolutely not "90% how in touch couples should be" and does clearly and simply give practical techniques and guidance. While the healing love practice that the authors present draws on the Taoist tradition and western sexology clearly dealing with how lovemaking can be a source of greater intimacy, healing, and spiritual relationship, they obviously were quite committed to providing clear and practical sex advice, as evidenced by its extensive coverage in the book. I'm a somewhat average male in most respects, although I would say I do live an alternative lifestyle. I do not have any specific previous "spiritual" or body awareness training. This book was astoundingly practical and allowed me to become a Multi-Orgasmic male in about two months of regular, although by no means particularly strenuous practice. It has revolutionized my experience of sexuality, and allowed me to leave genital focused orgasm and ejaculation goal orientation far behind, and take a quantum shift in intimacy and ecstatic pleasure for both my lover and I. She found it extremely quick (in a couple of days) and easy to learn how to not "crest over" and remain multi-orgasmic continuously without getting over-sensitized and not wanting to continue, as many women do after a full orgasm. This book can honestly change your life experience radically!!! ... I recommend a beginners mind here, and you will definitely be rewarded, even though there may not be an extensive amount of details in the book about the experiential progression of the practice, and even if, as the authors indicate, it may take up to six months of practice to get the hang of it. I just trusted my own experience as I went along and took what was valuable and understandable for me, and left the rest like water off a duck's back.

Wild Monkey Love
"Primal Love" is thoughtful and thought-provoking. It attempts to explain our gender-based differences through the sciences of evolutionary biology and primate behavior. You can learn alot form those crazy bonobos. While this book did not engender quite the "aha moment" that Harville Hendrix's work did, it did give me quite a few insights into my rather conflicting attitudes about money. I found it to be just a tad skewed toward the male perspective. It would be interesting to read something on the same material written by a woman. I would recommend this book to anyone wishing to gain more insight into gender-based behavior.

The forces that drive our human sexuality are basic
Primal Love provides readers a wonderfully informative profile of our human sexuality (as males and females) by focusing not on theory that is based upon psychological "mombo-jumbo" but on the bio-anthropological roots that drive our sexual: desires, behavior and social interaction. For those people trying to evaluate and determine the reasons for their social sexual behavior, this book will give you the "peace of mind" knowing that our (especially male) desires and behavior stem from evolution, and nature's pre-programmed model of perpetuating our genes as a species. Simply knowing the roots driving our human sexuality allows us to better understand and our sexual behavior.

Great Book
Explains the relationships between the sexes in the context of Evolutionary Psychology. I have recommended this book to several of my female friends who want to better understand why men are they way they are. This book provided me with some great insights and comfort at a time I was going through a painful breakup. Much more interesting, believable and useful than "Men Are From Mars and Women Are From Venus.

Interesting...
Nice book..but its a duplicate of "To the One Person I Consider to Be My Soul Mate". If u have the book mentioned...u wouldnt wanna get this copy...I give the cover 3 stars though:o)

I Loved It Soooo Much
This is the first book by Douglas Pagels & Blue Mountain Arts that I have read. Bought it just on a whim, but couldn't believe how wonderful the poems were inside it. Very romantic, touching, and not ashamed to mention God, etc. They were wonderful to read aloud. About four of the poems mention "stars", which studying astronomy together is how I met my 'soulmate'. ["You have the most beautiful wishes the stars and I can wish, and my prayer that someday I'll be able to thank you for all this"] & [..and I'm sure it was you who made my stars come out at night] I'm going to buy several other Blue Mountain Art Books. Enjoy life.

Dissapointment
This book is good if you are looking for research on the topic of sexual attraction (there are some interresting facts to be learned) but it's lacking in practical advice. In addition, the first few chapters seem to be all about why people are attracted to "10's", models, actresses and other perfect people. There's even a page listing the costs of plastic surgery. I was hoping to find out how to better use the posative traits I was born with in order to create my own sex appeal. This book made me feel that I could only do that by attempting to look more like Pamela Anderson or Gretta Garbo. I think that if you are looking for practical advice in relationships that you might be better off trying "How to Make a man Fall in Love with You" or "Man Power--How to Win the Woman You Want" by Dr. Tracy Cabot. I found that 20 minutes on her website ... gave me more insite into sex appeal than the entire reading of this book. The reason I give it 2 stars instead of one is because it makes an interesting coffee table book and the pictures are beautiful.

Scientifically Sexy :)
There was a lot of interesting information about appeal on many levels(scent, appearance, voice, charisma etc.), from different cultures, and across time. However, some information just wasn't accurate. The information they put in there about what females supposedly like in a man was very different on some facts from how I feel(in some parts of the book). As far as the accurateness of what was appealing in a female, I can't fully vouch for that, but it did make me wonder on some factors. I also felt that it was so focused on this one subject(this is one small aspect of life), that it was something a bit unhealthy to indulge in the book too much. Overall though, I thought this was a great book. Being a left-brained person, I loved the approach to the "art" of beauty from a scientific perspective.

Fun and interesting
Ok, so it's not a work of heavy scholarship (maybe see David Buss for that) or entirely a how-to-be-successful-at-love/sex/romance book -- Cabot's website is indeed pretty good for that, not that there are none of those helpful and practical pointers here. This is the kind of book you could give to your kid sister. And it glows with style (hint, hint...). I certainly think it's worth more than the measley two stars the other two reviewers gave.

The authors have surveyed the entire field of research in this extensive area and put together almost all the interesting little tidbits and theories into an enjoyable and easy-to-read format. Even someone who thinks they're not a beginner will be sure to learn some cool things here which will make them sound like an expert at their next social gathering. I really liked the tone of the book and its often layed-back, bemused approach to a topic which can often lead to furrowed brows and a grim outlook on things. You got interested in sex research because you thought it would be fun, didn't you? This book delivers. 4 1/2 stars.

Beyond Love: A 12 Step Guide for Partners of Sex Addicts
Published in Paperback by Discovery Press (1996)

Guide? Where?
This is a workbook - *not* a guide!

If you are the partner of a sex addict looking for help, this book is a waste of your time. It is a workbook. There is no information in it to help you cope. If you are working through this book with a support group or therapist, it is probably great. If you are alone, find a book that can help you find immediate strategies for survival. This one isn't it.

VERY helpful for recovery from this understudied problem
This book is a MUST for partners of sex addicts who want to work a recovery program and try to reach a place where they break out of their OWN dysfunctional behavior patterns. Most of us in this situation are drawn to sex addicts for a reason -- this book, in conjunction with other codependency recovery materials, is EXTREMELY helpful in breaking through denial about OUR problems and coming to terms with the betrayal we face as partners of sex addicts. It helps us refocus on OUR lives and break out of our obsession with the sex addict(s) and all their garbage.

My one BIG complaint about this book is that it is written as though all partners of sex addicts are women. This is obviously not the case (other studies state that 4-6% of women are sex addicts; we KNOW some of them have male partners!). The author refers to the reader as female and talks about the reader's interactions with other women in recovery when it is really not necessary for him to have been gender specific. This book should be VERY helpful to both men and women co-sex addicts; just be warned that the language may be offensive because it is so unnecessarily gender-specific.

The Ballad of Baby Doe: I Shall Walk Beside My Love
Published in Hardcover by University Press of Colorado (2002)
Authors: Duane A. Smith and John Moriarty
Amazon base price: $35.00
Average review score:

A small book about a great work.
Those of us who love Douglas Moore's opera "The Ballad Of Baby Doe" have had to wait over 45 years for a book devoted to its creation. "The Ballad of Baby Doe: 'I Shall Walk Beside My Love'" by Duane A. Smith is a very slender volume which falls short of this goal. Although it is interesting, there is not very much depth to this text. It reads more like an expanded program guide. There is no in-depth analysis of the score, nor of the structure of its libretto. It does leave you with the impression that there might be a fascinating story behind this opera's creation and it's creators, but you do not learn much about what this story is. Too much material is repeated from one chapter to the next. Nevertheless, it does contribute something to the scant literature about what is arguably "The Great American Opera".

One Star is Generous
This book is so bad, Amazon needs to come up with a NO STAR option. There are a stunning number of factual errors. Literally dozens, maybe into three digits. The author's grasp of the material is always superficial. I can't imagine a worse book on this subject. I know this sounds like hyperbole. It is not.

Caveat emptor
Read the review in the Spring 2000 issue of The Shakespeare Newsletter before purchasing this book. The review begins, "Briefly, this is so dreadfully bad a book that it, quite literally, ought to be withdrawn from publication" (18); the review amply substantiates this judgment in several thousand words quoting and describing the egregious errors in this book.

BENEDICT AND BEATRICE GET TRASHED
"BENEDIK AND BEATRICE GROW TEDIOUS" THUS SPAKE THE AUTHOR.

BLAME IT ON WHATSHERNAME-EMMA THOMKINS. HERE I WENT AND BOUGHT THIS STUPID DVD PLAYER AND NEW TV WITH THE S CONNECTION...AND THE STUPID DVD ITSELF.

AND I ACTUALLY ENJOYED - IF YOU CAN BELIEVE IT - THE FIRST AND I AM SORRY TO CONFESS - THE LAST SCENE BETWEEN EMMA AND THE IRISH ACTOR FROM BELFAST. AND I BOUGHT THE SCREENPLAY TOO. PATHETIC.

IF I HAD BUT KNOWN. IF I HAD BUT READ THIS BOOK.
