Very good book and very understandable.
Of the various radiation detection and measurement books available, this one is by far the easiest to understand. It is concise and does not ramble on with extraneous details. One learns the basic concepts and theory, thus allowing the reader to develop a clear knowledge base without becoming lost in disjointed detail. The reviewer learned from the first edition of Tsoulfanidis' book as an undergraduate two decades ago, and is grateful that no other text was used for the course. The reviewer also owns the second edition. The reviewer recommends that those desiring to learn about radiation measurements and radiation detectors strongly consider using Dr. Tsoulfanidis' text as a first step towards their education in nuclear science and engineering.

Very informational text, highly recommended
I used this text for my Radiation Measurements lab, with Dr. Tsoulfanidis. He is an extremely knowledgable man, and it comes across in the book. Very understandable and VERY informative.

a masterpiece
The best books regarding the history of medieval Flanders are written in English ( David Nicholas and Patricia Carson ). But this one is the summum.

a wonderful resource!
this book is a treasure trove of information. Details about politics, daily life, social mores, everything is in here somewhere, and even better it's backed up by quotes from medival sources. Nicholas is a fine scholar who presents a mountain of data in an intelligent and engaging manner.

A Constant Source of Inspiration
This is an excellent book on the beautiful and inspiring paintings of Russian artist Nicholas Roerich. Exceptional value with 88 colour reproductions of his work. The written material is faultless and fascinating. Roerich was dedicated to Beauty and I find that whenever I dip into this book I am completely captivated by his ability to speak to my innermost heart and spirit through the language of colour and the rich symbolism of his paintings. Fascinated by the legends of Shambhala and the wisdom of the ancients, Roerich's paintings and Decter's words take us on a wonderful journey that will enrich our lives. Roerich was a very deeply spiritual man and so his paintings serve this higher purpose. If you wish to light the inner fire of your spirit through art and beauty, then this is the book for you.

A fascinating biograpy with over 80 paintings reproduced.
If you are looking for a book about the life and art of Nicholas Roerich or if you are looking for a fascinating account of a modern mystic, one of the great men of this time, this is it. The book contains over 80 of his paintings, drawings and theatrical set designs. The biographical accounting is fascinating and inspiring. I found this book very enjoyable and highly recommend it. Also suggest checking out the web site of the Nicholas Roerich museum in N.Y. city. Paul Huston

Modern Molecular Photochemistry
Published in Paperback by University Science Books (1991)
Author: Nicholas J. Turro
Amazon base price: $38.50
Used price: $26.00
Average review score:

for the novice or advanced photochemist/spectroscopist
This is the first book to read on organic photophysics. Turro is a wonderful teacher; the introductory chapters of this book clearly explain basic concepts that other books skip entirely. I would particularly recommend this book to anyone who is new to the field and/or timid about physical chemistry, although it is certainly appropriate for more advanced students/professionals as well. The advanced reader can skip the first few chapters and still find plenty of useful reference material on energy transfer, photochemical reactions, spectroscopy, etc. There are other photochemistry textbooks available but the price makes this one the best value.

This book was with me all the time when I was in school
Excellent. My leisure reading as well as serious references

My Michael

Great book, a strange tale in a strange time!
This book was the first book I read that I couldn't stop and that I didn't stop feeling strange for it also. The all story seems to be a dream, our dream. Is an amazing view of what is our mind, how we see our love ones as strange peoples. Most of the time I related with Anna, but Michael is also me.
The book is also unique for the description of Jerusalem after the WWII where a young couple tries to build is own world. And where the Israel State is begginning.

The gripping magic of cold grey dawns
Written in 1967 , when Oz was only 28 years old, "My Michael" is still considered by many to be Oz's best novel ever. The plot takes place in the 1950's,Israel is still young, and Jerusalem is an old decaying city of stone and rusty fences. Hannah and Michael are a young couple and The story, as told by Hannah , takes us along several years of their married life. As the plot progresses we witness the two characters become distant and disharmonic. Hannah, who has a very turbulent soul feels suffocated with the everyday life ,with the jerusalem streets and with Michael who is a very unexciting person. She becomes more and more drawn to her fantasies and daydreams about a dramatic and heroic world where she is a princess being captive in the boring everyday world. With a cold ,misty and rainy Jerusalem as background and with the outstanding power of expression and depth "My Michael" is a book that hypnotizes and enchants the reader. If you have to read one Oz novel- That should be the one!

Extraordinarily Beautiful Love Poetry
Marge Piercy gives us a rare treat--sharing the poems that she and her husband wrote for their wedding. Poems in "The Chuppah" are among the most beautiful love poems that I ever have encountered. Piercy has made me rethink what marriage means, and how to celebrate all aspects of married life.

Her poems about her relationship with her parents are hard to read without weeping. All the mixed feelings that come with challenging parent-adult child relationships shimmer in these poems.

Her series of poems about underrated pleasures--sleeping with cats, folding sheets, etc.--make me remember to stop and enjoy the little things in life.

Marge Piercy is one of the greatest poets of our time! This collection is not to be missed.

Great Insight!
Marge Piercy's poetry is magnificent and at the same time very realistic! Some would say it's too feminist, but if you ask me it's very true and refreshing. The poems are feeled with energy and rage :o) BUY IT, IT'S REALLY GOOD!!!!!!!!!

Superlative new neuro-op text.
This is a phenomenal text written by the rising stars of neuro-op. It will soon be the new gold standard.

Excellent
A much more user friendly and updated version of the smaller Walsh & Hoyt text. The pictures are excellent and the discussions are well supported by clinical experience and the literature.

Nicholas I: Emperor and Autocrat of All the Russias

please help me...
I would like to ask every person who read this book to help me find the german version of it. It would be very important for my father to have it. Maybe one of the readers knows where to find it. Thanks for your help...

A standard work on Russia's most-ignored Tsar
Nicholas I has always had a bad press in Russia as well as abroad. The Russians considered his regime to be harsh, riddled with contemptuous foreigners, in short 'un-Russian'. This image was created by exiles such as Herzen and Bakunin, and reinforced in communist times. In the West, Nicholas rigorous opposition to political novelties like constitutions and republics did little to improve his public relations. Lincoln sets out to make clear what made this remarkable man 'tick'. He does that by commencing his biography with the Decembrist revolution, which gave a clear indication of the new tsar's state of mind. Time and again, the two key elements of Nicholas' reign are called to mind: autocracy and legitimacy. Lincoln has produced a convincing, and very well-written, biography of Russia's most important tsar of the nineteenth century. I am uncertain whether this or Nicholas V. Riasanovsky's _Nicholas I and Official Nationality in Russia_ is the best biography of this man, but Lincolns extensive references appear to tip the scale in his favour.

Nicky D. from L.I.C.: A Narrative Portrait of Nicholas Detommaso (Portrait Series)

Funny, delightful read of a real New York character!
Written and designed by Warren Lehrer (not Jim Lehrer) this is a really great read and a great gift. Designed like a 'person' this book reads like a person talking. Really fun. Great insight into some New York history and neighborhood feeling. Warren Lehrer is a unique designer who was able to put a 'personality' on the page with photographs, and typography.

A classic portrait of a fascinating New Yorker
Written by Jim Lehrer, who has an interesting way of presenting 'visual literature' (varying font types and other graphic tools), this book is a riveting look at one quintessential New Yorker. Nicky D. Tommaso has lived in the same apartment across the river from the United Nations for over 65 years, and seen life go by with a keen eye, and a charmed smile. This comes across as a series of vignettes, anecdotes, and stories told as only Nicky D can. With an irreverence that is delightful, and an insight that is at times, profound, we are led by the hand to various little corners of his house, his life and his mind. A great read that may be universal in its appeal mainly because its so utterly honest, and drenched in human suffering and joy. All told with a sense of humor that is the most appealing element of this book. Excellent!

On Moral Grounds: The Art/Science of Ethics
Published in Paperback by Crossroad/Herder & Herder (1996)
Authors: Daniel C. Maguire, A. Nicholas Fargnoli, and Fargnoli A. Nicholas
Amazon base price: $16.95
Used price: $8.25

Matthew Weiler's Review of OMG
This book is an excellent and provocative insight into the practice of ethics. The sagacity it provides is probably indispensible. It is illustrative of the reality that everything we do is morally grounded, and further that morality can NEVER be a polarized issue. Morality and ethics is dependant on the circumstances, and this does not insinuate relativism at all. If one is to read this book, they will have no doubt that the time spent was anything but well worth it.

OMG is a great approach to a method of "doing" ethics.
On Moral Grounds is an update of Maguire's earlier work The Moral Choice. The newer work with the insights of Fargnoli offers the reader a terrific approach to a method of Ethics. The Foundational Moral Experience (FME) is offered as a universal starting point for all to begin the art/science of ethics. The structure of the "wheel and hub" allows one to visualize the essential aspects for a mature ethical decision making. I have used this book on the graduate, undergraduate, as well as advanced high school programs. It can be easily adapted to communities of faith as well as agnostic and atheistic communities. It is well written and an enjoyable read for all interested in the arena of morality.
