Good book for beginners
This book contains the partitures of the songs mentioned in Uppercase in the Editorial's review and the lyrics for all the other songs of this great rock-opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The partitures are written for piano, with chords for guitar and lyrics, and are quite faithful to the original songs. They aren't difficult, so you can play them without too much troubles and remember with pleasure the voices of Yvonne Elliman, Carl Anderson, Ted Neeley and the other artists. This book doesn't give you a complete satisfaction if you are instead looking for a more "seriously" thing, with all the partitures including the instrumental songs.

Excellent for playing songs from JCS
The songs included in this book are Heaven on Their Minds, Everything's Alright, Hosanna, Pilate's Dream, Last Supper, Gethsemane, King Herod's Song, and Superstar. A few things should be noted: Firstly, Heaven on their Minds does not include the "all gone sour" last four verses that are used in live productions of jcs. Instead the song is written to fade away. That might present a problem to people performing or using that song for an audition. The last supper only includes the chorus that the apostles sing. Superstar is tuned to a C instead of the original E that is on all of the recordings and live productions. Other than that, all the other keys are the same as you might hear them on cd recordings, 1973 movie, and live productions. Chords are also included for guitar players.

SUPER(STAR) OF A BOOK!
I bought this book when it first came out and love all the nice vocal selections in them. Now that it is the Lenten Season... Great time to go back and play and listen to them again on my old LPs! Have a nice day! BUY THE BOOK!

Where did it end up at none other than amazon.com.

Okay, but kind of confusing..
The music itself is very wll written, and easy to understand; however, the cello part sometimes goes into treble clef and back to bass, which is confusing when you're sightreading notes.

Almost Vocal Score
I just returned this book. I was hoping for a complete score as was suggested in one of the reviews, but it is missing the Prologue, which the Narrator uses to open the show. ("Some folks dream of the wonders they'll do, Before their time on this planet is through") That was THE song I was after since it is not in any of the Vocal Selections books I've seen. Apparently, the author added this song later (the show has evolved over time) and has never gone to the trouble to publish it. So, if you're after the Vocal Score, this is great, but don't think it's complete. So now I'm off to the piano and stereo to transcribe the sheet music from the soundtrack. Tedious, but fun.

What a great selection of music!
I recently performed in an amateur performance of "Joseph," and because the 'official' scripts (updated in 1995, I believe) hadn't arrived yet, we used portions of this book (with a score from the '70s) to begin rehearsal and choreography. We were expecting some changes to the score, but to our surprise, the only song that was missing was the Prologue, which we had been choreographing to the CD. Some of the harmony and character breakups had been changed, but apart from that, the score was essentially the same. This book is perfect for those of you who need audition music ("Close Every Door", "Pharoah", "Any Dream Will Do"), or those of you who just enjoy singing solo or with friends.

The book has a complete score.
In other reviews, some people suggested that the book doesn't have
complete score, but that's wrong. For example, the first song by the
narrator is the same as Pharao's Song. You only need to
replace the lyrics.
I checked each DVD track with this book, and it has a complete score.
This music book is not intended for piano solo, and it does not
have any chords. It has voice parts (solo, duet, chorus) and
piano accompany part for actual performance.
I heard that this musical went through a lot of revision and
additions. So, I expected that the scores might be different,
since this book was published in 1975. But I was surprised to
see that there is virtually no difference from the DVD release
(1999).

Hmmm
As a disgruntled and unfairly disgraced former butler of Lord Lloyd Webber's I have to say that I was disappointed with this airbrushed travesty.

Exciting title a big let-downer
When I picked up this title, I was so excited! Andrew Lloyd Webber is literally my hero. His music is the only kind I listen to! (I'm only exaggerating a little bit) BUT,this book was so, so, so, BORING! I expected to hear about how Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice came up with the ideas for Jesus Christ Superstar, and Evita! But, all I got was boring lecture on recording booths, and status on some sort of ratings chart! In short, Andrew Lloyd Webber is still my favorite artist, but, his life must be too boring to bother with

This music book was very helpful in that the piano pieces could easily be played by a non-maestro person. It is very nice to be able to sing at the same time that you are playing.

Vocals means vocals..
The Vocal Selections from CATS, is just that, a ten song selection of the "vocals" from this great play. Unfortunately, the music included is only for piano and guitar. The CD released in 1982 of twenty-one selections, gives the listener a "complete" sound for the play now on video. One of the problems with the materials available from the play are the differing versions. A veiwer of "just the video" may get the impression that this "is" the play. When looking at the book, "CATS (The Book of the Musical), then comparing to this vocal selections and the video it becomes clear of the differing versions of CATS. It is important that the reader of this book is aware of this fact. As a teacher, many of my students who look at these differing versions get confused by the character, costuming, and musical changes. This "Vocal Selections" however does give someone the ability to see many of the words of the most popular songs from the play and have a basic (piano) arrangement to accompany the work. I would recommend this book to persons wanting to prepare a solo performance and groups doing tributes to the show CATS. Finally, the book is a good value for the price and has some nice photographs arranged with the songs of the central characters for CATS.
