GREAT book for Evita fans and piano players alike!
This is such a great book! I, myself, am a fan of Andrew Lloyd Webber and his musicals. And now, I could impress my parent's company by playing one of the many beautiful songs of Evita. This is a MUST have for Evita fans!

It's fun even if you don't know the music.
The Quentin Blake illustrations are cool. The lyrics are very readable. (Quentin Blake illustrated many Roald Dahl books) A 4 year old friend of mine loves this book and sings along with it.

Notes from the Author
This book was an extraordinary adventure for me, as I wrote it {and I did write the ENTIRE book} within two years of leaving The New York Times and setting out on a new area, the world of film and film music and rock and rock opera. I was heavily involved for a year working with, advising The Who, Neil Diamond, Rick Nelson, even Lorretta Lynn and Brenda Lee. I had the distinct honor of introducing Elton John to the U.S. in his first appearances in New York and Philadelphia. Then came my time as manager of artist relations for MCA, and meeting Tim Rice, who's been a friend since, and Andrew Lloyd Webber, who's been an acquaintance since (I'm sure he has some friends, I just don't know that many of them, as they tend to be royalty or very upper class British). I was there with them from one of their first visits to the U.S., when they had very little money and actually had to stay in my apartment, to the debut of their rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar and on to the movie and their other works, such as Evita, Chess, Cats, Phantom of the Opera, Aspects of Love, etc.

I consider myself so very blessed to have been in the "right" place at the "right" time and to have participated in their/these lives and careers.

And if it had not been for Loretta, I would never have renewed my interest in Patsy Cline and written so often of her.

Rock Opera:The Creation of Jesus Christ Superstar is worth the price if only for the incredible photo gallery. Of course, I hope you find the writing interesting, too.

I am amazed at how many people still treasure this book and how many colleges use it in their theater courses.

Don't harp on it
Many of the great Andrew Lloyd Webber songs are here, including "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina," "The Phantom of the Opera," and "Jesus Christ, Superstar." My friend Peter Puller the Pasta Chef and Bartender Extraordinaire loves to do his own versions of these hit tunes, such as "Don't Cry for Me, Semolina," "The Fandom of the Okra," and "Jesus Christ, at the Bar." There was certainly something special about Webber, and there is no better way to appreciate his special genius than getting a little plucky with a harp.

Excellent
All the favourites are here, "Don't Cry for me Argentina", "Memories", etc, beautifully arranged for the harp. Though a beginner, I have found this book easy to follow and am now fingering my way through some of my favourite tunes. I bet they play this in heaven.

These are the songs they want you to play ...
... when you sit down at the harp! Old favorites like "Memory" from 'Cats' and five songs from 'Phantom of the Opera' are arranged for the folk (non-pedal) harp. All are in the key of C or G with fingering; no lever changes. While the book is described as "intermediate to advanced," I'm a rank beginner and have learned two songs from the book already. Just takes practice!

Some of my favorites include "The Music of the Night" (Phantom), "All I Ask of You" (Phantom), "The Phantom of the Opera" (Phantom), "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina" (Evita), "Tell Me On A Sunday", and the haunting "Pie Jesu" which has been sung by Sarah Brightman and Charlotte Church, among others.

If you ever plan to play in public, you can bet that these are the songs people will love, because they're familiar with them. An excellent collection of favorites!

For us who love Cats more than we should...
A nice enough book, with pictures from the (old! Probably original Cast) Broadway production. You get the pictures, all the lyrics (which you get just as well from "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats"), and, the most interesting part of the book; essays from Lloyd-Webber, Napier, Lynne and one other on the making of the musical Cats.

For CAT lovers everywhere!
My child is a huge fan of the musical CATS and I bought this book for him so he could have pictures of all of his favorite characters. He loves this book and I found it definitely worth the price! The pictures are beautifully done, the colors are vibrant and it's a great companion to the CATS video that we already own. I definitely reccomend this for CATS fans!

For any CATS lover!
All songs include pictures. Writings by people originally involved with the production. Shows many interesting items such as Costuming and Original drawings.List of all actors shown in the book.

A must-have book for all fans of Lloyd Webber and his work.
This is a must-have for Lloyd Webber fans; it truly is an in-depth account of his life and work. Packed full of information and many photographs, it was an interesting read. It has been claimed that Walsh concentrates too much on the chapter featuring "Phantom of the Opera", but I for one cannot blame him! Walsh has reason to, as he states "Phantom" was the first musical where Lloyd Webber developed his more mature style and a strong sense of key association than in his previous musicals. (He also admits it was after viewing "Phantom" he had the notion to write the book in the first place.)

The only reason why I would not give this book the full five stars is the fact it may be somewhat frustrating to read for musicologists and music students who wish to study Lloyd Webber's style in depth. Walsh tantalizes the reader with only brief excursions into analysis of the music; e.g. very brief descriptions of the keys and rhythms the songs are in, with no printed musical examples on how Lloyd Webber constructs the fabric of his scores.

However, in all, I would certainly recommend this book.

E.A. Bucchianeri, author of "A Compendium of Essays: Purcell, Hogarth and Handel, Beethoven, Liszt, Debussy, and Andrew Lloyd Webber" and "Handel's Path to Covent Garden: A Rocky Journey"

Great info; okay writer....
My first impression of this book was that Michael Walsh must only be a fan of The Phantom of the Opera. It honestly seems to be the only show that he doesn't have an unkind word for. However, once you get past the comments that might be offensive to serious fans, you find a great wealth of material on the inside life of Lord Lloyd Webber. Everything is covered in this book, from the origins of his nickname (Bumper) to Jean's pet monkeys and days in "Bohemian" Lloyd Webberdom, to the recent revivals and productions of his shows. Even the musical structures of some songs from each show are analyzed. This is only the beginning; there is lots of great information that any fan will find infinitely interesting. Now if only Mr. Walsh would lighten up....

I wouldn`t buy this book bacause....
I rec`d the first Michael Walsh book as a present as I am an ardent fan of ALW. Michael Walsh nit picks at the composer`s genious.I would like to know his qualification to be a music critic. I would buy such a book for curiosity, to prove that the lay person is the final ctitic.

You love Lloyd Weber plays you will love this book.
You will love this book if you love the stories Andrew Lloyd Weber uses for his musicals. It was so touching and tragic it made me cry! Plus if you never got to see the play this book is great because if follows the play so closely.

Great songbook!
To clear up any misunderstandings -- this is a song book, with sheet music for piano, guitar, and voice for selections of songs from the musical "Aspects of Love". The only story is what you can glean from the lyrics. That said, though, this is a fantastic rendition of the pieces in easily performable format. This musical includes some of the most beautiful pieces written by Andrew Lloyd Webber, including "Love Changes Everything", made famous by singer Michael Ball!
