The women are facinating but the book needs organization
There are many touching, humorous, profound thoughts beings passed on in these letters between the 4 women. However, I had trouble following who was who. First, I went to the back and read each author's personal statement. Then I found myself going back again and again. It think it would be helpful to have a "time line" for each of the authors so their letters could be put in a better context.

Heartwarming!!
This is a great read!! This book shows the value of long-time friendships and demonstrates how friends are fun during the good times, but are necessary to help get through the hard times.

These four women share their personal lives with us: their triumphs and their trials. A book that motivates you to call and connect with that close friend that you may not have found time for recently. This is a beautiful story of friendship and the value of sisterhood.

Keep us posted ladies!! We are waiting for Wearing Purple - the Sequel.

Happiness is a warm puppy and a few great friends.
This book is a marvelous expression of the true love and support that comes only from having good friends. I initially purchased the book simply because I know one of the authors. I wanted to get an autographed copy for my sister. I naturally purchased one for myself as well. It has helped me to refocus on that which brings true happiness, the joy of having a very few good friends who accept you as you are and love you unconditionally.

Muscle and more
Excellent book with very good photography. Have purchased many books by Randy Leffingwell and happy with all of them. (This is the best though)

Rare view of rare muscle cars
This book offers great pictures and unique insights into the background of some of the most desireable muscle cars of the 60s and 70s.

Of particular interest are the backgrounds offered with the Baldwin Motion, Yenko, & Shelby cars.

Great book.

The Man Who Had No Rhythm: A George Kennard Story

Informed Adventures
This adventure/mystery story may be short in length but it covers a lot of ground in its unusual view of the people of Central America as seen by the main character. I hope there are more to follow.

Exciting new talent
This fast paced story combines adventure, mystery, travel, politics, economics into a fascinating plot filled with interesting characters. Black Charlie who serves as an erratic guide in the maze in which the hero is trapped is both amusing, sad, and insightful. Although this book is easy to read and can be finished in one enjoyable session, its insights, scenes, dialogues, and ideas will continue to resonate for a long time. I look forward to Mr. King's next novels with great anticipation.

Michigan Trees: A Guide to the Trees of Michigan and the Great Lakes Region

A great book that just fell short of extraordinary
Definitely worth the price and the book does its job of helping you identify tree species of Michigan. Offers additional in-depth information about the anatomy of leaves, twig cross-sections, fruit, wood characteristics and uses. Most of which is more than average readers will probably want to know, but is interesting reading none-the-less. All I wanted was a reference to ID the trees on my property.

I was pleasantly surprised that the book also includes information on vines and shrubs, but was quickly disappointed when I discovered that this section offered no illustrations or pictures of either - only text descriptions.

Contrary to the front cover, the book has no photographs! Another bummer. All species are represented by illustrations only, but at least I can honestly say the drawings seem extremely accurate and have great detail.

My four-star rating is also due to the incomplete shrub and vine sections. I realize that this is a "tree" book and that adding such information is a plus, but the writer(s) should have stayed consistent and included illustrations for these as well. Trying to identify features by descriptions only is tedious and really seems to take away the joy of the whole adventure. Too bad, it would have been the "icing on the cake".

I recommend buying this book as a main reference and suggest finding supplement information via the web. There are endless sites that offer much of the same information for free, but carrying this book into the woods would certainly be more convenient than lugging a stack of print outs.

best tree field guide for the upper midwest
If you need to help your kid with the perennial leaf collection or if you just want a handy field guide for trees, I have found none better than Michigan Trees. I own a well worn copy of the 1978 edition and it is so popular among friends I am ordering another to loan out.

The Tears of a Clown : A Look Behind the Scenes, Behind the Mask
Published in Paperback by Otis T. McMillan Ministries, Inc. (01 January, 1995)
Author: Otis Thomas McMillan
Amazon base price: $7.00
Average review score:

Rev. McMillan's best ever!
This book really helped me deal with issues that I have been battling for many years. There are some things that happened, that hurt and that humbled me, but I must get over it and go forward. This book was a great help!

Looking Behind The Mask
Using the lyrics to a song recorded by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, author and paster Otis T. McMillan delivers to us his first book, The Tears of a Clown: Masks - What Do They Really Hide? A Look Behind the Mask! With clarity and reverence he spreads his teachings of getting past pain in life to fully appreciate the joy that is being bestowed upon you. Further, he stresses inner healing and the importance of looking inside to overcome the masks that we wear throughout life.

Written in short chapters of what reminded me of sermons, to include scriptures, song titles, and other lessons, I was taken to early Sunday mornings with this book. It motivated and inspired me and though I don't read many books more than once, this is one that I hope to read over and over again to reap the full benefits of it.

My only issue with the book were the typos, but Rev. McMillan's strong voice overpowered those and as a result, the only thing I can envision that would be more of a treat would be to sit and hear one of his sermons in the congregation of his church.

Three Men of Boston
Published in Paperback by Brasseys, Inc. (1997)
Author: John R. Galvin
Amazon base price: $13.95
Average review score:

Politics of Pre-revolutionary Boston
John Galvin guides the reader through Boston politics in the fifteen years preceding the Revolution, 1760-1775. Mr. Galvin focuses on the three men he contends were the most influential in the events in Boston in the pre-revolutionary years (Thomas Hutchinson, James Otis, and Samuel Adams).Very readable and a good source of behind-the-scenes activity that led to the beginning of the American Revolution.

Solid research and fascinating intellectual inquiry
Author John R. Galvin explores the personalities of three key figures whose actions and discourses constituted the roots of the American Revolution. Galvin's admirable scholarly discipline and his keen analysis deserve praise. His scope is very precise: it begins and ends with the period where Hutchinson, Adams, and Otis were interacting. Readers interested in Hutchinson, Adams, or Otis should read this book to gain a deeper insight into their personal philosophies and into the political struggles and challenges which made or defeated them, and which ultimately constituted the unyielding backdrop of their social existence and historical judgement. Readers interested in mid-18th century Massachussetts or American politics will learn much about the many groups and organizations of the period.

A Treasury of Evangelical Writings : Valiant for the Truth
Published in Paperback by Inst for Biblical Textual Studies (01 May, 1996)
Author: David Otis Fuller
Amazon base price: $16.95
Average review score:

Good Overview of Christian Writings
Fuller's collection of writings from some of the big names in Christian history is an excellent place to start learning about who said what, why, and when. The selections are short enough to be read in those few spare moments between tooth-brushing and falling asleep but long enough to provide an adequate picture of the thoughts and styles of the authors. Fuller did not aim at exhaustiveness; the reader who wants more information will need to look elsewhere. This book is a good spring-board. Based on the introductory notes for each author, one would easily be able to look up other works by the author and historical and biographical information about the author.

I would comment on two downsides to this book. First, the selections are not always taken from the most authoritative or readable translations (where translation is relevant). For some of the authors, certain editions have become quoted widely and in many contexts; the reader might recognize the places where one of the famous quotations originated, but it's unlikely that the famous quotations will be present verbatim in this book. If the reader doesn't recognize the place or the quote, the reader might be at a loss to be able to trace (from this source) this influence of a writer's specific words throughout other times and places.

Second, the biographical and historical notes that introduce each author are rife with cliches and attempts at eloquence that more often end up being circuitous than eloquent. I prefer that people get from point A to point B with a minimum of what Cicero calls "purple passages", but that does not seem to have been the goal of the writer.

As a beginning resource or quick reference to digestable selections, this book is great. As a guide to writing and translation, this book could have been better.

Truth is timeless
This is a wonderful compendium of sermons and writings from thelast 2,000 years (roughly) that explicate and proclaim the Gospel ofJesus Christ. Each piece has a short historical introduction to give some background about the author and provide historical and cultural context. Each piece also reminds us that truth has been proclaimed by some very intelligent and wise men throughout history and it also reminds us that no one has a monopoly on truth.

While each piece of writing is wonderful in and of itself, the real value of the book, and it is a real value, is that it provides a source for a reader new to church history to identify major historical actors and become familiar with them. From there, it allows the reader to gather the information necessary to expand their self-education into church history by providing a source to jump off from. That is eminently valuable and I heartily recommend this book.

Adventures in Yap
Published in Hardcover by Vantage Press (1994)
Author: Clyman Otis
Amazon base price: $13.95
Average review score:

"Adventures" in Paradise
While many people have travelled to islands in the South Pacific, Clyman Otis has given us a window to a very different look at paradise. Living and working for several years on the remote island of Yap, Clyman somehow manages to keep his sense of humor through all the difficulties of culture shock, Pizza Hut withdrawal and learning to live and work with the Micronesians. It would be nice to hear more from Clyman. Perhaps further adventures, or what lasting impressions his time in Micronesia left on him. Fun to read, "Adventures in Yap" will alter your image of an island paradise.

Adventures In Yap, A Pacific Backwater
This book is a good reference for anyone considering spending any time in Micronesia. It gives a good and sometimes humorous overview of what living conditions and activities are available to anyone who choses to visit that area of the world.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and can recommend it to anyone with an interest in what life is like in the more remote areas of our worl.

very funny book, good reading
I loved this book! It maid me laugh out loud. Mr. Otis's description of his time on Ulihti was priceless, especailly the hapeless Filipino worker who followed him with the wheel barrow and Andrew with his magic wheel barrow. This is not a sereous book about the culture of Yap, but just a fun read.

OTIS!
It was nice to hear the other side of Otis Redding's upcoming family and friends (something different) in this book.

However, it would have been really good to hear what Otis Redding's Stax family (1963 - 1967) really had to say about him in this book when they were working closely behind him in the studio and also to mention what do they think about him after 35yrs since his death...That part should have been added on to this book..Otis has a Stax's family too...

I dont think its fair to have that old little bits and bits statements that was pick up from another story from a book or magazine so long ago...that I what notice in this book called Otis!..

This book was clearly written on one side of the story. I am sure that there are many untold stories told about Otis Redding, in the studio that the stax family can really tell us today.

For example, of many...I would like to know from Issac Hayes side of the story, his memory of singing in the background song in Otis Redding's song and why it happened.. The song was called "Fa-Fa-Fa Sad Song"...stories like that should have been brought more.

No matter what is said, Otis Redding will live on forever.....

The Original "Love Man"
It was exciting to read about the Big "O".I was ... fed on his music, thanx to my mother. She was so in love with him that she received sympathy cards when he died.It was like a death in my family.......Reading about Otis's childhood was interesting..He is my favorite male vocalist of all time!!..No other male singer sings with as much emotion..Rugged and raw!!.An important fact mentioned was the racial tensions of the times, and how music and musicians were civil rights activists in their own way..I was most surprised to learn how "Satisfaction" was born..Otis sang this song like he loved it!!..And he had just learned it the day it was recorded!..A musical genius........Otis's music still gets played in regular rotation at my house......Rest In Peace "O".

Good Overview
I think that Scott Freeman did a Good Solid Job here with this Book.it captures many elements of Ottis Redding.it's a shame that a Major Film&Other things haven't been brought out to capture the Man fully. He did alot in His Short time on Earth.this Book Brings alot to life. The Man as a Artist was One of The Baddest Ever I have Heard.

20 Minutes to Dinner: Quick, Low-Fat, Low-Calorie Vegetarian Meals

Authors: Bryanna Clark Grogan and Otis Maly
Amazon base price: $10.36
List price: $12.95 (that's 20% off!)
Average review score:

Not always twenty minutes, but not bad.
I have only tried out two recipes from this book 1) Greek style spinach pizza, and 2) Soy "fish cakes". The pizza was quick, easy, and very tasty, although not having a feta flavor,as promised. The fish cakes used exotic ingredients and took me 90 minutes to prepare, not 20 as the title of the book suggests.

One of the reasons for the long preparation time is that the recipe starts out assuming that you have COOKED (and cooled) brown rice on hand. Cooking brown rice by itself takes about 35 minutes, way over the limit already.

The second reason is having to blend NINE ingredients, to add to FIVE other pre-prepared ones. To all the time needed to do this, add the rice cooking and cooling, fifteen minutes for the baking, and you far exceed twenty minutes.

A minor annoyance is the exotic (at least to me) ingredients that are often used, like kelp powder, nutritional yeast flakes, miso, etc. I doubt that these ingredients are readily available everywhere. (The book does give a list of mail order addresses, though)

In spite of my being exhausted by the cooking (I am not a very experienced cook, as you may have guessed,) the fish cakes tasted quite good. So, all in all, if you are prepared to read the recipes very carefully beforehand (so as to avoid the "cooked rice" syndrome,) and plan realistically where to get the exotics, this is a very useful book. Just use it selectively.

This is the book I'd wish I'd had 10 years ago ...
... when I became a vegan. Perhaps this book ought to have been entitled "30 minutes to dinner" instead - yet this shouldn't put any people off, and as the previous comment rightly states, the negative critics given by some people is completely unjust! Bryanna is - in my opinion - one of the most innovative vegan cooks, and I can recommend any of her books (I have them all myself). Not only is the book about quick vegan meals, they are also extremely low-fat, yet all are rich-tasting delicious meals - AND as also mentioned below - the ingredients are easily available in health food stores (even in Denmark where I live!) If you do not have a food processor, get one now, as this is one equipment that Bryanna uses very frequently in her books. The opening chapter is about cooking & shopping tips, and this is very useful for planning your meals, as well as making a lot of your basics yourself - it's cheaper and you're sure not to get any weird extra-ingredients! There's a chapter on speedy dips and spreads, lovely soups and chowders (check out the sea vegetable chowder!), inventive salads (the oriental noodle salad is sooo delicious!), pasta dishes, quick pizzas, extensive sandwich and all kinda stuffed breads ideas, grilled alternatives to meat (tofu & seitan), stirfries, ... the book is simply jampacked with ideas and variations so that you can use what you have at hand. It is a superb cookbook, and it's definitely recommended!

Bryanna Clark Grogan kicks butt in the kitchen!
EXCELLENT! A must have. I have been vegan for a little over 7 months now and this is the first book I've found that is consistently good, fast, healthy, economical, and so delicious that even my non-vegan husband didn't pull a face when I presented him with the carrot-oat patties and brown gravy. Recipes for substitutes for egg, meat, fish, cream, and cheese are found throughout the text (the Melty Pizza Cheeze is mild and not disgusting like a lot of the faux vegan subs)as well as quick meal suggestions. I own a few other vegan recipe books and, although they have beautiful recipes, I find that they are not fast or simple enough for the everday- gotta -get- the- meal- on-while-kids-are-screaming- life that I lead. Some say the recipes take 30 minutes-I don't think that matters. If it is under 45 minutes then it is a quick meal. Gourmet vegan menus can take hours sometimes. This book will be the one with gravy splatters and juice stains. I highly reccommend it.
