Exceptional
This serial is the best theatre series in existence. The plays that are covered are: Ragtime, The Lion King, Art, The Beauty Queen of Leenane, Gross Indecency and Pride's Crossing.

This book provides useful synopsis of each book, as well as an incredible summary of the year in New York Theatre.

The Lion King: If you only see one musical, see this one. I can't believe some people didn't like it. In a surprisingly tight race between this and Ragtime, The Lion King beat it out to win the best msuical Tony. It is easy to see why. To watch it on stage is stunning. The opening ten minute sequence has made history. I cannot even begin to describe the impact that it had on me, and the audience (by the time the elephants appeared in stage, the audience was weeping).

Get this book (and the next one if you can, along with all the previous ones).

The Ultimate Theatre Book
This is a true treasure of a book. What the editor does is he: Reviews the year in theatre for New York (Broadway, Off Broadway, and Off-Off Broadway), which is great for theatre enthusiasts (like myself) who don't live anywhere near New York. Produces synopsis of the prize winning plays of the season (He covers the New York Critics, The Lortel, The Tony, and The Pulitzer prizes/awards). He used to choose ten of the best plays of the season, but changed to the abover system in the 1996-97 season. This season, the plays he covers are: Wit, Side Man, Fosse, Closer, Parade, and Not About Nightingales.

Also included are a whole schwak of pictures and lists of the award winners, the longest running plays, and an entire list of plays that made the Best Plays Yearbook before.

This is an absolute must for anyone with love for theatre. The reviews are great and intelligent, the synposis are fun to read, and the Hirschfelds are great to look at. This book will provide hours of a old-fashioned broadway lore, and you will be blissfully lost at home.

Great book
I had to review this book for a historical book review and it read like a breeze through the part describing the battles of the war. The political part after the war part was intresting but not as exciting as the former. This is a great read for fans of the Mexican War and even though of the Civil War.

Excellent overview of the Mexican War
Otis Singletary's The Mexican War is a concise and excellent overview of the war. Its greatest strength is the way it brings the personalities and personal conflicts to life. It provides great insight into the way politics intruded upon the prosecution of the war.

Better than I expected
I've worked for Otis for nearly 30 years. I thought I knew how the company started and grew, but I was wrong. This book, produced by United Technologies, Otis' parent corporation, could have just been a promotional piece, but to the credit of the author I found it to be a well researched, well written chronical of Otis' humble New York beginnings in 1853 through today's global presence.

It is a book written for people who are interested in the growth of the world's greatest cities and a company that was instrumental for that growth.

The biggest surprise was the book's readability. Goodwin helped me understand the personalities and motivations of the people who brought Otis to where it is today. He painted pictures of the situations surrounding the events which helped me understand the logic behind Otis' progress. I felt he dealt honestly with United Technologies' takeover of Otis in 1976 (which I experienced) and brought the influences of Otis' global operations into perspective.

It is an eye opener for internal Otis associates, and an educational experience for non-Otis readers who want to learn how a company can start from nothing and influence the way we all live. It is a book about machines, business, cities, and time. I highly recommend it.

Up-Down..None of above....
"Elevators'..is modern sounding, compared to stevadore implication of British..'Lift'. Began in 1853 by mechanic Elisha Otis,(NY foundry), this corporate history was commissioned by parent co...United Technologies, which paid in advance for 'modest # of copies". Otis's automatic braking system took fear out of skyscrapers-, but implosions of WTC has put it back

Don't Be Afraid to Follow Your Dream.....
"Some people collect stamps. Some people collect coins or dolls or bottle caps. When he was a boy, my father collected rocks. When he wasn't doing chores at home or learning at school, he'd walk along stone walls and around old quarries, looking for rocks. People said he had rocks in his pockets and rocks in his head. He didn't mind. It was usually true." So begins Carol Otis Hurst's inspiring biography of her father and his lifelong passion for rocks and minerals. In simple and gentle prose, we follow the story of his life, how he grew up and married, opened a successful filling station, lost his business during the depression, and finally while looking for odd jobs and work met Grace Johnson, the Director of the Science Museum. Ms Johnson was so impressed with his knowledge, dedication, and love of rocks that she to gave him a steady job as night janitor at the museum so that he could work around rocks, and that as they say, was just the beginning..... Ms Hurst's fascinating story is beautifully enhanced by James Stevenson's spare and touching pen and ink illustrations, done in quiet earth tones, that really capture the life and times of this very endearing man. With an afterword to complete her uplifting story on the jacket flap, Rocks In His Head is an engaging and nostalgic little treasure that's perfect for youngsters 5-9, and is told with great insight and affection. Never be afraid to follow your dream!

The Triumph of the Amateur
An amateur is someone who does something for the love of it and the main character of Carol Otis Hurst's wonderful, beautiful Rocks in his Head is the epitome of an amateur. In this well illustrated story, Ms. Hurst recounts the story of her father, a rockhound who was dissuaded from making a career of his first love. We follow him through his life from successful gas station owner to family man struggling to make ends meet during the Depression, all the while lovingly collecting, cataloguing, and caring for an ever expanding rock and mineral collection. The payoff comes when her dad gets a job at the local science museum after the director notices his interest in minerals and then views his personal collection. The father goes on to become the curator of the museum's mineral collection. James Stevenson's illustrations perfectly compliment this story of a triumphant amateur. Children's books with true stories like this one usually have a summary page after the end of the story to give details left out of the main book. Unfortunately, details like the father being sent to college by the director and his eventual rise to director of the museum are left for the dust jacket, a part of a children's book that is often lost. Other than this minor criticism, I think this is a 5-star book and wish there were many more like this.

A must if you love wordplay
While I took this book from the children's shelf of our local library, this "older" kid still loved it. The palindromes are funny and the cartoons that accompany them are well drawn and relate to the palindrome. My favorite is the extension of the classic, "A man, a plan, a canal, Panama" , "A man, a plan, a cat, a bar, a cap, a mall, a ball, a map, a car, a bat, a canal: Panama." Palindromes that are a sensible statement are not easy to write, so the author is to be commended in his ingenuity in constructing such wonders, especially some of the longer ones.
This is a book that can clearly be enjoyed by children of all ages and as soon as I am done with this review, I will be handing it over to my children.

More wordsmithing from the Palindrome master!!
Jon Agee may be best known for his illustration of children's books ("The Halloween House", "If Snow Falls"). However, he has also proven himself a proficient wordsmith, easily and playfully pulling words all apart and putting them together. "Sit on a Potato Pan" is one of five books delighting in the oddities English spelling.

Palindromes are words or phrases that are spelled the same way forwards as backwards. Take the title of the book and spell it backwards, and it's the exact same title!! These things are not easy to create, and the longer the phrase the more difficult it is to both spell backwards and still make sense. The fact that "Sit...Otis!" is one of THREE books of palindromes by Mr. Agee only proves his genius at manipulating words and letters.

Like his other two books of palindromes, "So Many Dynamos!" and "Go Hang a Salami! I'm a Lasagna Hog!" (now THERE'S one that must have taken a few days to create!!), "Sit...Otis!" is illustrated with wonderful drawings that make the palindrome live and sparkle. For example, in one of my personal favorites, two gents in the Old West are looking at a wanted poster. Pictures of large cats are on the wanted poster, and one man says to the other, "darn ocelots stole Conrad". Another is of three men staring at 9 little pieces of scribbled on paper. They make their own notes about them, and the caption is "some men interpret nine memos".

Needless to say, these things are not easy to write!! Especially the longer, more complicated ones like "naive was I ere I saw Evian" and the one that makes the title of this book. While not a book geared for young children, students in, say, third grade and above would no doubt get a kick out of these and other palindromes. With Mr. Agee as a guide, it's a perfect opportunity for students to go on and create their own. What else is Otis capable of??

A concise, easy to read overview of moral issues
The author provides a thorough analysis using the latest statistics and stories to illustrate why we are slipping morally. The book is also prescriptive, telling readers how to communicate to our kids and friends about morality. This is an excellent title for anyone who wants a handle on the wisdom of the Judeo-Christian tradition and the consequences associated with ignoring or rationalizing poor moral choices.

A direct, honest look at moral issues in our nation
This book offers a concise description and prescription for our nation's moral ills. Otis doesn't just point out the problems. He provides solutions. This is an excellent resource to help children or adults as they navigate through difficult moral choices. It offers help about how to make tough decisions in moral grey areas and tells readers how to deal with a friend, spouse, or child who is living a morally destructive lifestyle. Further, it is a powerful resouce for those who believe in the Judeo-Christian ethic and its relevance for today.

essential basketry reading
If you are interested in native American basketry, this book will be part of the backbone of your library. Originally published in 1904 as two volumes, when Dover published it, they were bound as one. As a Dover publication, it is, of course, an excellent value--I only wish it were available in hardcover. It has 460 wonderful old photographs and clear line drawings. Mr. Mason was a product of his times and his writing unfortunately reflects an often maddening white male superiority, however his scholarship and clear admiration of the craft, the baskets and their makers mitigates that fault. A must-have book.
