Getting Real About Tibet
This is a great book if you want to learn more about the reality of Tibet, rather than the numerous romantic myths that have been spawned about it in the West. Having lived from my teens to mid-Twenties in a Canadian community where Tibetans were resettled, I can tell you first hand that they are no more good or bad in general than any other people group. Reading a book like this will save you a lot of wasted time in building up fantasies and having them disappointed. It will help you deal with the more obvious problems, like Lobsang Rampa's fictions, as well as gain a more balanced view of the often over-stated claims about Tibetan Buddhism, environmentalism, peacefulness, and all the other projected idealisms that go into changing the actual particulars of real Tibetan society and history into the Shangri-La of Western desire.

The ultimate publication in contamporary art and culture
A great book about a great artist, in a great series of "Phaidon" dedicated to contemporary art. Not easy to read, but worth it. The debate about Jeff Wall's art (in which wall himself is an importent participent) encompasses many fundamental questions and notions regarding new art history, post-modernism and society at the end of this century. A must for contemporary art lovers.

Quirky and Delightfully Creative Santa Claus Story
I heard about this book from a friend who is both a comic book editor and the father of a five year old. His child enjoyed the book. Any adult I have shown the book off to has also been captivated. I was particularly impressed with the fact that Trondheim managed to produce such a fun and inventive take on the old Santa Claus tale.

Most beautiful current book on Khmer sculpture
This is a superbly produced book about ancient sculpture from the Angkor region. The photographs are wonderful and the text is well written and scholarly. If, as I do, you believe that Khmer sculpture is amongst the most beautiful ever made then you will be able to spend hours enjoying this book. One warning: since most of the objects are located in the museum in Phnom Penh, if you are a collector of such books you are unlikely to find images of sculptures which you haven't seen already.

academia-cruising at its best
Interested in art? Interested in critical sociology/ geography/ cultural studies? This book is damn fine, much more than I expected. Moving on from a controversial a subject as primate-painting in the early sixties I expected a re-hash of naive socio-biological studies, but was pleasantly surprised. This book is enormously thoughtful, revovling around two main sections. The first gives historical and cultural context to the phenomenon of ape-painting; a frank and non-sentimental account which nevertheless inspires faith in the extension of moral rights to the animal kingdom... The second section is a more detailed analysis of the aesthetics of chimp art, especially of the 'origianl' chimp artist, Congo. Many questions are opened, few answered, as is to be expected - and desired - of a book in such a cutting edge field; I can only hope it is the first of many such books...

Nothing else like it!
Pin-Up Girls From Around The World is the best book I've bought all year. It's funny as hell and the art is so good, it's impossible to describe. The girls are super hot and there are enough hidden pop culture references to keep you busy every time you pick it up. My girlfriend and her friends really like it to because of the clothes, which is kind of strange but whatever. Really, you should check this out.

Résiliation et résolution unilatérales en droit commercial belge : éléments d'appréciation
Published in Unknown Binding by Bruylant ()
Author: Thierry Delahaye
Amazon base price: $
Average review score:

A Civil Law approach with a universal flavor
Throughout the pages of this wonderful work, the author gives a thorough picture of the subject of contract rescission and resolution. Belgian law is scrutinezed, and reference to French and other legal systems are made. The work, devoted to a modern topic of economic contract law, makes useful reading for any professional working or doing academic research on the field, and can easily be understood in its clear french. Most of the proposed doctrines will be applicable to any Civil Law based country, and will certainly show an insightful view on the subject for the common law user. For this reason, the work may be clasified as universal
