Brewing

This Book is for Highly skilled Brew Masters at a Brewery
This book deals with the highly skilled, advanced, scientific mind of a Brew Master or scientist who needs an answer in skilled scientific jargon, this is not a Homebrewing book by any means. I have been brewing for 16+ years, and have 80+ books on the subject of the Brewing Art and this book I doubt, I'll ever open!

Accurate, technical reference.
Great resource! Technical background in chemistry a must!

Craft-brewers Bible
Finally, a book geared toward the craft-brewer! The information in this book is presented in a very straight forward, easy to understand manner. There is no overly technical language or formulas to confuse the reader, nor are there any costly or impractical techniques that are out of reach for most craft-brewers. This book is a must have for anyone working in the craft-brewing industry, or the home-brewer looking to reach the next level.

Liars Poker Rising Through the Wreckage/International Edition

Read for a basic understanding of share trading
Liar's Poker's explanations of Share Trading terminology (ie. shorting and junk bonds), was helpful to the novice stock broker, as myself.

The plot was lacking, although the story of Salomon and the volatile financial markets kept my interest.

For all aspiring Investment Bankers!
Almost everyone who is graduating is tempted by the glamour and large bonuses of Investment Banks to wonder what it would be like to work in a large investment bank on Wall Street and actually consider it as a serious career option. LIAR'S POKER provides an irreverent, bird's eye view of the whole process. This is an extraordinarily funny but thought provoking account of a money focussed guy's innings at a venerable Investment bank Salomon Brothers, starting as a $48,000-a-year trainee in 1984 to go on to become an institutional bond salesman in Salomon's London office earning $225,000 in 1987. Far from just being entertaining the book gives lots of insight into the intense cutthroat investment banking industry and makes it accessible for even the naivest of readers the intricacies of the milieu. An insider's look at the inside of an investor banking firm, with no holds barred, which makes it probably one of the most recommended books for anyone considering more than a passing acquaintance with the investment banking industry.

As good as the best from Tom Wolfe
A view of the guts of part of the finantial industry in a style that I found very similar to Tom Wolfe's ( no offense intended to either author). Instructive as well as entertaining.

Good introduction for self-teaching of the basics of ASL
Good book for getting started... after reading and using it you may want to get a more complete education in Sign Language.

Excellent Resource
This is very helpful for those wishing to learn some basic sign language.

Great for beginners
This book is great for beginners. It shows you alot of signs that would get you started and on your way. However, our class has learned that because all of the signs are not 'universal', we needed an ASL dictionary to go along with it. The discriptions of the signing actions need to be read a couple of times in some instances to understand what you are susposed to do. But is is good for a beginner to get the basics.

Expecting more
Furness must have been an intense character, and the insight this book gives on his family, childhood, history, and being a novice architect is informative, but I was hoping for a less bias, more thorough analysis and review of him and his work. And color photos! Furness's work needs to be shown with a little color, at least.

Even better than the titillating title!
This book transcends the genres of both biography and architechural study to emerge a fully-formed captivating portrait of an American original. The book is also beautifully-produced. I couldn't put it down!

Quick & Easy Guide to Statistics
As a Phd student in sociology, I find this booklet indispensable as a quick and easy reference guide to all the basics of social science statistical analysis. After going through more complicated texts such as Lewis-Beck's "Applied Regression: an Introduction" and Berry and Feldman's "Multiple Regression in Practice", I find this small booklet extremely helpful and clear in its explanations of the logic of basic bivariate and multiple regression analysis, as well as significance testing. It is quite useful as a tool to review the basic methods of analysis, and I especially like the list of regression assumptions at the end, all of which we had to memorize and explain for qualifying exams! I would only request a separate section and more detailed explanation of the Chi-square test, complete with application examples.

Excellent content, problematic form
(This review refers to the e-book downloadable edition of this book.)

CONTENT: Michael Lewis is a fine reporter on internet/new business and "Next" is a fine book. I give it four, maybe five stars.

FORM: The e-book format comes with startling advantages and equally startling disadvantages. BEFORE YOU BUY THIS BOOK make sure you understand these:

PRO: I wanted a copy of this book really quickly. Amazon does a fine job delivering physical products quickly, but I couldn't wait even one day. With the e-book format I was able to download and begin reading this book within minutes.

CON: I was very disappointed with the limitations imposed by the e-book format. At least with a paper book I can photocopy a page and show it to a friend. With this e-book I couldn't cut and paste a quotation into an email, I couldn't print a page, I couldn't loan it to a friend. (I don't think I can even read it on my other computers.) And the Adobe e-book software demanded server privileges on my network.

In their zeal to protect content from piracy, "Next's" publishers have gone so far to the extreme that they disable not just normal "fair use," but they have made even the buyer's own personal use annoying, difficult, or impossible.

And the e-book is more [money] than the paper book.

SUMMARY: Excellent book, but the e-book format in which I bought it has both striking advantages and disadvantages that a potential buyer should be aware of.

Pacific Rift/Why Americans and Japanese Don't Understand Each Other

Worthy Follow Up to Liar's Poker
Michael Lewis, the controversial author of Liar's Poker, and later writer for the New York Time's Magazine, is quite a writer. He proves his talent yet again in this work about Japanese-American business relations and cultural differences in the 1980s.

As the saying goes, if you liked Liar's Poker, you'll love Pacific Rift.

My only word of caution is that the book may seem dated now that the U.S. isn't scared to death of the Japanese economic "machine". However, the book now gives a nice historical review of what things were like only ten to fifteen years ago.

It's a shame the book is out of print.
