A true introduction
So many statistics books that claim to be introductions are not. This one really is. It is clear, with just the right amount of detail. Read this book first before reading other books on multiple regression.

A timeless understanding of inequalities
Lewis, in the Second Edition of the Culture of Inequality, makes the reader uncomfortable: can I, a well intentioned person, help ease the consequences of persistent, harmful inequalities in the US? A careful reading of this rich, deep description of "our town" will most likely generate a sense of futility -- the type that makes it even more important to look for all the ways that policy makers, teachers, parents, or anyone with influence can work to avoid contributing to the reproduction of inequality. No town, no city, no social institution, and no geographic area is immuned to the "culture" of inquality. Moreover, individuals and groups engage in everyday behaviors, and even everyday thinking, that help to maintain the culture of inequality.
Charles Tilly(1998)in Durable Inequality gives the reader a detailed and complex theory to explain persistent social inequalities across time, nations, and cultures. Michael Lewis puts Tilly's theory into action. He brings it to real life, using examples we all recognize. In a study of one ordinary place, Professor Lewis makes us wish that his study is, or could be dated. It is such a shame to realize that it isn't.

ERISA for the common man!
This book shows that ERISA can be fun. I like the green cover, and all the inside jokes about the government (pay attention or you might miss 'em.) All in all, this is the kind of legal information book we've all been clamoring for. Hats off to Lewis!

THE Architect for Victorians
Obviously you enjoy architecture or you wouldn't be thinking of reading a review of this book. Think no further, buy the book. Frank Furness has been overlooked way too long and this book shows why in pictures and a nice overview of text why this mans work, and what is left of it, should be escalated to the heights of the finest.

Uniquely American
Marilyn and Lew write this book from the perspective of employees at AT&T during some rough times. Incredibly American not only chronicles these difficult periods for the company, but shows how great gains were made. What makes this book different from other quality improvement sources is that it's based on looking at the common denominator among American workers (and all Americans, in general)--the American archetype. According to this type of research, there are certain similarities among all of us brought up in this culture; ways we view the world around us based on our upbringing. And what the people at AT&T realized through conducting this research is that as Americans we need to attempt a task, ill-prepared; fail at the task, and feel ashamed and embarrassed; use this emotion, with the help of mentors and coaches, and not only try again and succeed, but often succeed beyond our wildest dreams. I enjoyed reading this book not only for its interesting and informative content, but for its style--well written and easy to read (with diagrams, no less!) I'm buying a copy for my dad, a manager in the auto industry, as well as for a friend who's also a manager, and not originally from the U.S. Incredibly American would benefit those who are in the field of quality improvement, as well as those who manage (and want to motivate) people, as well as those who just want to understand a little better what being an "American" means on a different level.

Meticulous Scholarship, Terrific Images, Great Book
Written in insightful, concise language, this book tackles complex ideas and expresses them simply and clearly. Not only does Lewis introduce and explain the importance of August Reichensperger, he makes the ideas of the German Gothic Revival easily accessible to an English-speaking audience. The selection and quality of images is outstanding, and vividly supports the text. This is a wonderful scholarly contribution as well as a fascinating read.

Much of this volume is more technical than the average reader wants or needs. It is a textbook used in veterinary schools. But a dedicated reader could gain much from it. Even the average reader could benefit from the chapters on commerical pet foods and on home prepared diets.
