A Sober and Necessary Reality Check
I bought and read this book when the softcover was first released, and had the chance to glance at it again just recently. The book has not lost any of its incisiveness and sting. James' astute and direct analysis of Black intellectual life has been long in coming. She articulates opinions that many people have probably had, but have not had the guts or gumption to put out in public. It's about time that public (and well paid) intellectuals such as hooks, Gates, West, and the others got some real criticism. I highly recommend this book, which should be required reading in introductory and advanced Black Studies programs. Its incisive and on-target critique of postmodernism alone is reason enough for it to be included in the curriculum. This feminist volume is rich in ideas, insightful in its critique, and is a refreshing antidote to most of the postmodern B.S. floating around the elite caucasian, leather-coated campuses these days.

An Explosive Intellectual Achievement!!!
Joy James' radical synthesis of political philosophy and African American feminist philosophy is at once provocative and intellectually explosive. Drawing from such diverse areas of intellecual inquiry as African American philosophy, Women's Studies, African American Studies, Lesbian & Gay Studies, postmodern and postcolonial theory, Critical Race Theory, and political philosophy, Professor James puts forward a relentless critique of contemporary African American intellectual life that leaves both the "conservative" and the "radical" sides of the African American intellectual arena suspect. In her employment of insights culled from the nascent Africana philosophical tradition, and both the classical and contemporary African American social and political philosophy traditions, James critiques and offers correctives to African American public and private intellectuals of no less distinction than bell hooks, Patricia Hill Collins, Henry Louis Gates, Jr., and Cornel West. James' books also provides a severely needed critique of W.E.B. Du Bois' much mangled feminism, Anna Julia Cooper's often overlooked contributions to Du Bois' thought, and Ida B. Wells' anti-lyching radicalism. Applying discursive formulations and practices normally reserved for the most highly revered among the Western European philosophers, Joy James utlizes her training as a political philosopher to elucidate a path of out the impasse that African American intellectuals seem to be caught in. This book is absolutely a must read for anyone interested in African American intellectual life, African American critical theory, and/or African American feminist philosophy.

Forces a major reevaluation of Reconstruction
This is a bitter-sweet book that should go far in convincing people of all races of the existence of a cadre of educated and capable progressive Black people in South Carolina during reconstruction. The sadness is that the white power structure extinguished this at the end of Reconstuction with a segregated Jim Crow society unseen before in South Carolina. This book will go far to extinguish the myth of crude unschooled Blacks manipulated by northern carpetbaggers to "rule" the state after the Civil War. The African-Americans who were able to gain a foothold on the American Dream during this period were to become the nucleus of the civil rights movemement in the US. Given a less pig headed white power structure, racial tensions of the past century might have been avoided.

something is wrong somewhere
I have just read 'The Best Options for Diagnosing and Treating Prostate Cancer' published by Health Education Literary Publisher, on which I could not find any information, but their ISBN suggests that they are a very tiny publisher - maybe self published?).

It is an extraordinary biased book giving the 'best' methods for possibly preventing, monitoring, staging, conducting a biopsy, treatment etc. It assumes the reader has already read and is aware of the basics of prostate cancer and, therefore, does not cover the material that is provided by most other books - it is the next stage on (which is good). The author (James Lewis - a non-doctor survivor) really puts himself on the line and open to challenge. Nevertheless it's the most helpful book I have read to date. It doesn't give wide ranges of percentages - it's specific, it doesn't pussyfoot about. For me, it is great book as it unashamedly gives his 'gold standard' for any treatment. It also has the most comprehensive bibliography (30 pages and about 250 references) so it appears to be exceptionally well researched.

It is highly evangelistic in its selling of Dr. Frank Ritz' prostRcision treatment at the Radiotherapy Clinics of Georgia, claiming that cancer free survival rates are at least equal to and probably much better than surgery, even that performed by Dr. Walsh's Johns Hopkins team - and with the added benefits of significantly less chance of erectile dysfunction and other side effects.

If what he says is anywhere near the truth there doesn't seem to be any other choice but to have prostRcision.

I find it disturbing that other books only seem to mention prostRcision as an aside. The books published by the American Cancer Society and the Mayo Clinic don't even make a single reference to prostRcision. So something is wrong somewhere!

Have you read it? If not, at this stage of my limited knowledge, I would highly recommend it.

Beyond the Red, White, and Blue: A Student's Introduction to American Studies

A wonderful survey of American culture
I read this book in Dr. Carlson's class about 7 years ago, and although I liked the book very much at the time, I didn't fully appreciate the book. Since then, I have thought about the book and its implications often. There are very few books I can say actually changed my views of the world and culture, but this book is one of them. It is an excellent blend of the highs and lows of modern American culture. I highly recommend this book.

Read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest
Somewhere in the world there may be someone who knows more about the life and work of C.S. Lewis than does Professor James Como, but almost certainly there is no one anywhere who appreciates him more or has analyzed him as thoroughly. What Plato did for Socrates in the 160 pages of the Apology, Crito, and Phaedo, Professor Como does for Professor Lewis in the 200 pages of this remarkable new book - shows us a great mind seeking, finding, and presenting the pure and transfiguring light amid the darkness of this present world. The word "genius" is used much too generously these days, but Professor Como convincingly demonstrates that C.S. Lewis has a multiple claim upon that rarefied reality - as scholar, storyteller, medievalist, apologist, fabulist, rhetorician, and possessor of one of the greatest memories in human history, a memory able to recall and recite every word its possessor ever read. While the book is not for the dialectically timid - there are passages that demand to be read with an extra-large thinking cap - the human Lewis is here in abundance, "the good man speaking well," and also, like an even greater teacher, having compassion on the multitude. Not only did the compassionate Lewis answer every letter written to him - and they were legion - he generally wrote his works in a style the multitude understood and delighted in. Here is a book that many of the multitude of Lewis-lovers will read to their profit, their pleasure, and their greater affection for the mere Christian who not only showed them Narnia, Glome, and Perelendra, but a new heaven and a new earth.

caught
The book CAUGHT by Willo Davis Roberts was an exciting and thrilling book. It was about two teenagers, Vickie and Joanie, who ran away to their fathers house in California, only to find their father isn't there or the night after. They soon befriended a neighbor and began a quest to find their father. I recommend this book for ages twelve and up who like mystery and adventure books.
