unjustly overlooked, this book (really comprised of three novellas, all together a trilogy) deserves to be mentioned in the same breath with other modernist works, such as "Dubliners" or "Sons and Lovers." at its time, the books were important, both politically and socially, because they present scottish language and scottish history as things separate from - though no less equal to - the larger "English" culture. beyond this, gibbon's lyricism is a wonder to behold; he can manipulate language in ways that may bring a tear to your eye (and the story, mournful as it is, just may add to it)."Scottish Quaire" is a work that many have never heard of, and that is unfortunate. it offers a unique voice to the human condition, and, perhaps more importantly, the scottish condition. i tell you to buy it, or at least check it out of your library (lord knows there'll be copies available).

A marvellous trilogy with each novel depicting that particular era superbly. My personal favourite was Sunset Song because it was saluting the end of an era for the Scottish crofter who will always be part of Scotland's great heritage.

It is rare to find a book written on Scotland at the beginning of the 20th century to be so powerful and moving. The book heroine, Chris Guthrie is one of the most realistic and brilliant characters in modern literature. To have a book that merges elements of the Kailyard and the counter-Kailyard movement so effectively is an brilliant idea, difficult, but brilliant. Quite simply the greatest book ever written.

The author seemed so knowledgeable on the subject of Jim Bowie. I didn't know some of the stories myself. I often wondered what went on prior to The Alamo and now I know. I would like to see the same type of Book come out about Crockett and Travis.

Eickhoff and Lewis have teamed together to compose the most complete account of a complicated, often oversimplified man. As a hero of the Alamo, James Bowie has been the victim of many myths. I believe Eickhoff and Lewis succeed at erasing the myths, yet keeping the mystery and magical qualities that seemed to surround the man, who some called "El Leon", or the lion, because of his impressive mane of red hair. Lewis published an article about Bowie last year, where he gave us a taste of what was to come in this book, Bowie. I recommend it, expecially the magical telling of the forging of the infamous knife that became Bowie's trademark.

This book is a collection of essays regarding C.S. Lewis by those who were acquainted with him at various times in his life. I've returned to reread it, or parts of it, from time to time. The book fills in some gaps for those of us who won't know him personally until we join him on the other side.

How did different people think of C.S. Lewis, the famous radio broadcaster, Oxford tutor, lecturer, and author? This collection of narratives from those who knew the man gives a strong flavoring of his personality and characteristics. Easy to read, organized, and candid, I enjoyed a leisurely reading experience with this book.

The Micro Logic's 1 page - 2 sided - All Plastic - Micro Chart is a programmers dream. With much of the reference information a book would have it would be dogged eared and thumbed through. A lot of information for such a small space.

I read this book about seven years ago and I still remember it as one of the most enjoyable books of the many I've read. Each chapter takes a look at a different cult that has/had sprung up out of some excitement over the possibility of aliens. The analysis is qualitative and not overly theoretical (nor mildly journalistic).

I like this book because it is more objective perspective, not from the UFO true believers camp. Although from an academic viewpoint, most of the reading is interesting and would make a good resource book for any library. Its illustrations help put a face on the many types of flying saucer organizations. It contains an extensive bibliography, as well as an early history of the Heaven's Gate phenomenon (before they committed suicide). Fascinating chapters on Unarius and the Raelians. Lots of information all in one place, even a few statistics.

This is a humorous, clever tale of a well known western folk hero and a virtually unknown bumbling western nobody. The book engrosses you from the beginning and keeps you guessing until the very end. Don't let the length discourage you. This is a great read!

This is the second in the book seris and is well worth the time it will take to read this. It has acton and adventure and there is even a joke in it about Bill Clinto

When I met Jim Lewis in 1996, he was introduced to me as a scholar who was doing field research on the Movement of Spiritual Inner Awareness as a "New Religious Movement." My immediate reaction was, "Oh-oh," in the wake of some difficult past experiences with journalists and former colleagues who ended up misquoting me and others or using remarks out of context. I have read Jim Lewis's account of MSIA with great satisfaction and admiration, both because of its clarity and quality and also because of Jim's mastery of research and reportage. It is, simply put, a very good read, even for someone who has studied and practiced teachings through MSIA since 1976, as I have.

If you are at all curious about what all the talk about John-Roger has been about, or if you are looking for an experience-based, genuine teaching to "lean into" but are wary of hucksters, ego-maniacs, and others scary points of call, I highly recommend Dr. Lewis's book as a good starting point. If you are doing research on the various so-called new religious movements of the latter 20th Century, you couldn't find a better mentor or example to emulate. And if you are a parent or member of the clergy (I am both), whose child or parishoner has pursued an interest in MSIA, this book should do much to allay your fears and perhaps offer some reassurance.

With his impeccable credentials and breadth and depth of study in both Western and Eastern practices, Jim Lewis is someone who can tell you what some of us have known for many years but could not put so well on paper for a general readership. Here is a scholar not afraid to immerse himself in his subject, allow himself to actually experience what he studies, and then stand back and faithfully report his findings in an appropriately objective way that also expresses great humanity.

As a fellow educator, researcher, and writer with a 30-year background in "New Age" and esoteric/mystical practices here in the West, I take my hat off to Dr. Lewis. Jim, you set a high standard for all of us, and I am especially grateful as a student in MSIA to be able to encounter this subject area through a more objective viewpoint. This book is a great gift and makes a great gift. Thank you.

I found Seeking the Light to be both interesting and helpful because apparently Dr. Lewis looked at the controversy and decided its sensationalism had no place in a balanced work. He presents a clear account of the historical facts ... .

What I appreciated was learning of the long and deep spiritual roots of the practices presented through MSIA, and the history of the organization that seemed to me to neither play up or play down any part of the story. It is a fascinating objective academic study, not a tabloid tell-all.

Pick apart the book on its literary merits. Leave the personalities and the politics out of it.

I liked the book. I found value in it. I think people who are interested in non-traditional religions - or just in an interesting story of a contemporary spiritual movement will like it too. It's readable. The author is well versed in both the field of spirituality/religion and the specifics of this organization. He presents the story with taste, humor and clarity. What more can one ask of any book?

When I purchased this book, I half expected it to say how a Project Leader has to have personal skills and give some general suggestions about doing it. It surpassed my expectations, by being very practical.

I can see many of the suggestions he makes working on the company I work for. At the end of several chapters, Lewis provides some tasks you can get to work on to build your team, and keep it working.

Lewis writing style is great. He gives a lot of references, while keeping a good pace. He knows how to support his arguments on other authors without turning his book into an academic textbook.

I think a great companion book for this one would be "Getting It Done: How to lead when you are not in charge", since, IMHO, "Team-Based Project Management" is especially useful when you have the Project Manager title.

James Lewis presents team based project management in a clear and easy to understand method. The main points out highlighted making it easy to re-review those topics. I recommend this book for all Project Managers.

The financial concepts are explained very nicely. Though it is my first finance book i can go through it without much difficulty or extra help. However there are still some drawbacks need to be noticed:

1. Need more charts and graphics to explain the concepts, ie: when explaining the DU PONT System, i think the pyramid structure can be illustrated so as to state a whole concept, not only fragments

2. Too many examples

3. This book is too detailed in both relevant and irrelevant matters

Still, I think it is a good book.

If possible, please tell me the difference between this book (Fundamentals of Corporate Finance by Richard Brealey) and Principles of Corporate Finance by Brealey and Myers. I currently own the 5th edition of Principles; having worn the book down with constant thumbing, I am looking for a replacement.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I and my friends(with no business background) are studying corporate finance by ourselves using this book and all of us are very satisfied with the book so far.

The concepts are explained very clearly(even kindly) and sample tests with complete solutions are very useful. The book also has solutions for selected end-of-the chapter problems and I enjoy mini cases which help me apply the concepts to the practice in detail.

I had tried other finance books before and most of them were not clear in explaining concepts and a bit difficult for me(my major was chemistry). I think that this book is probably the easiest and the best book to begin with for starters in finance.
