For days, I searched for a book that my students (could afford $)would ENJOY reading. In addition to Freeley's book this is the one I adopted for my class at Emerson College.
It CLEARLY (using pleasant layout & copy) explains * The Debate Process * Building The Debate Case * Elements of Debate * Research * Constructing Affirmative and Negative Cases * Refutations * Cross Examination
Speakers Duties, Delivery Style, etc.

The first thing to keep in mind about the book is that IBM's bundling it with IBM APL2/Windows and IBM APL2/OS2, so if you're planning on buying these implementations, perhaps you want to wait and get the copy with your software. Otherwise, if you're using the free TryAPL2 or your site has a license for APL2 and you need the documentation, then this book is very useful and helpful.
Having said this, here is what the book WON'T teach you:
- Shared variables. How APL2 manages communication with other processors, with other APL2 systems, etc. This is a very important topic.
- The associated and auxiliary processors: How APL2 manages screen IO, how APL2 talks to REXX or to your operating system, how to manage files from APL2 (!!!), etc.
You should keep these in mind because when you'll be done with the APL2 at a Glance book, you might wonder, for example, how to do file IO in APL2 -- you'll need the APL2 user guide to help you with this and other topics.

It is enjoyable to hear the background behind his various movies and TV series as well as his other business ventures.
The reader is left with an impression that Mr. Garner is a much deeper and more complex man than one would suspect.
This book was written in 1985 and so much of Mr. Garner's life is not covered. After a mid-life crisis involving numerous lawsuits, a troubled marriage, poor health, deep depression, and the "cancelled" Rockford Files, Mr. Garner seems to have mellowed considerably. It would be very interesting to update this bio with current info.

The concept of the Irish Atlas is simple yet highly effective. Generally one page of text is followed by a thematic map. For example, a chapter on the Viking wars of the 8th century is accompanied by a helpful map that reveals the exact location in Ireland of Viking raids, settlements, and more. In another later chapter, The Ulster Question, a fine overview of this critical and longstanding issue is followed by a map that reveals the distribution of Protestants and Catholics in Ulster, 1911. Other chapters include, but are by no means limited to, the 1798 Rebellion, the pre-famine economy, World War 1 & the Easter Rising, and 1990s Ireland.
While some readers might quibble with the rather limited text, it's important to remember this is an atlas. The text (solidly written, by the way) is meant as an overview to these pivotal events in Irish history. It should be used as a gateway to more detailed writings. (The atlas concludes with a two-page "further reading" section.) As for the maps, editor Duffy concedes they "show facts rather than influences or ideas..." But this reader found the maps instructive and creative, a fine complement to the text.
Kudos to Mr. Duffy and his collaborators on the Irish Atlas. It does indeed go "some way to explain the story of this unique and fascinating place."
Okay, let's face it, it's old. It's from the days before politics disads, and when "cards" really were 3x5 index cards. Obviously a poor resource for intruducing anyone to the contemporary debate forum. If you're a novice who wants to learn to win rounds, this is not the place to look. Reading this my first year of debate just made me more confused than when I started. Debate has changed a lot since this book came out. The theory, style, and lingo are all so different today that this book is practically useless as a learning tool.
On the other hand, for long-time debaters who want to codify their style to be more powerful, intuitive, and organized, this may prove quite helpful. The methods of evaluating and presenting arguments that this book investigates are really quite good, and the section on cross-examination is second to none. I've judged too many high school rounds where debaters waste time, let their opponents weasel out of certain death in cross-ex, or simply don't see the obvious fallacious connection between disad links they havn't seen before. If nothing else, this book could boost your speaker points a few notches here and there.
I only gave it three stars because it no longer lives up to its title, but I didn't give it less because every time I skim it it's enlightening.
