Probably the only really good Sub-Mariner stories
This is truly the good stuff from the Silver-Age. By the time Sub-Mariner got his own comic, the stories had degraded to mush. But this collection of stories is a very good read. The opening plotline of Sub-Mariner's "quest" for the Trident of Neptune is the best of the bunch. Sub-Mariner was not this good in the 1940s and John Byrne's version in the 1990s was not this good. If only Marvel would issue the Incredible Hulk in a Masterworks Edition featuring the Tales to Astonish stories. What a bargain the kids of the 1960s got with Tales to Astonish! This is a must buy in the Masterworks collection.

One of the Best Marvel Masterworks
WOW! I love this book! Back in the early seventies I came across a giant Sub-Mariner special which featured the first issues of Prince Namor from Tales to Astonish. I was in awe of Gene Colan's (Adam Austin) art. Buying this Marvel Masterworks edition reminded me how much of an influence it was on my own work. Stan Lee's stories are full of grandeur and excitement. Prince Namor, The Sub-Mariner wasn't an easy character to like but once you got use to his regal manner you were hooked into his under seas adventures. Jack Kirby and Bill Everett (Namor's creator) show up later in the series on art chores. However it's Gene Colan's amazing rendition of life under water that makes this strip work as well as it did. I seem to recall that Gene wasn't very fond of the work he did on Namor. The book suffers only in it's reproduction. The film negatives used seem very thin and fail to capture Vince Colletta's finer ink lines. The coloring, though great, is too harsh on the glossy stock Marvel seems insistent on using. A matte surface would really do justice to the work. For those of you who missed out on these tales, buy this book. Stan Lee's revival of Prince Namor is legendary.

well worth the money
I have the orignals of this story and would tell any fan outthere that this book is well worth the price. If you likeSpider-man, and/or Venom this is an excellent book.

The Creation of Marvel's NO-GOOD Villian
The story starts with Cletus Cassidy, serving 11 consecutive life sentences, in the same cell as Eddie Brock, who continues to train himself for the destruction of Spiderman. When Eddie's "other", the alien symbiote bent on Spidey's death, breaks him outta jail, it leaves behind a spawn of itself, the same yet different. Cassidy runs into it while watching Venom flee. They bond and CARNAGE is born. Spiderman investigates the random murders of CARNAGE after a fellow lab assistant at ESU is killed there. After a tussle, Spidey decides the only way to stop one madman with no sense of right is to bring in another with a twisted sense of justice. Venom and Spiderman team up to end Carnage's carnaval of blood.

The Original Uncanny X-Men complete their Training Program
As it was made clear from the first issue of "The X-Men," mutants were feared by "ordinary" people. The sub-text of the prejudice of the majority against the differences of the minority certainly became stronger as the series progressed and is perhaps its most defining element; certainly it was the centerpiece of the promotional campaign for the film version. "The Uncanny X-Men Masterworks" offers up the first five issues of the series, written by Stan Lee and drawn by Jack Kirby. We are introduced not only to our merry band of mutants (Professor X, Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Angel, Iceman, and the Beast) but some of the seminal villains for the group: Magneto (#1 and 4-5), the Vanisher (#2), the Blob (#3), and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants consisting of Magneto with Mastermind, Quicksilver, the Scarlet Witch and Toad (#4-5). At the end of issue #5 Professor X congratulates the X-Men on completing their training period, telling them it is now time for them to go out on their own and function as a team without relying so heavily on his mental powers.

Although over time the idea of "mutant misfits" became a strong element in the series, what attracted me to the X-Men in the beginning was that they were basically teenagers. They were even SMART teenagers, and that was even more appealing. The comic also benefited from starting off right from the beginning with the group's greatest villain with Magneto, who represents the flip side of humanity's fear of the mutants. It is always interesting to go back and reread these early issues to see what gets abandoned, such as Bobby Drake as the Snowman and Professor X pining away for the lovely Jean Grey because he is old and confined to a wheel chair (that sure would have been a very interesting love triangle once you throw Scott Summers into the mix). It is interesting to compare these early issues with the comic's celebrated run beginning in issue #94 when Chris Claremont revitalized "The X-Men" by having Professor Xavier recruit a new team. Of course, the comic went on to become the top selling title on the planet.

Marvel Masterworks: The Avengers
This reprints the Marvel Comics title, Avengers, issues 1-10. This collection of 1960's nostalgia reprints the first Silver Age team comic book that consists of many of the super-heroes that have or had comic books of their own. The Hulk, Thor, Ironman, Ant-man, and the Wasp team-up to defeat the Norse god of mischief, Loki, in the first issue. Other highlights include Captain America joining the Avengers and the first death of Wonder Man.

The Birth of a Legend
This Marvel Masterwork is a full-colour, hardcover, action-packed depiction of Captain America's earliest adventures.

Inside this Marvel Masterwork Origional Stan Lee brings to life the Legendary Captain's Origin and his first adventures, with classically brilliant artwork, including the epic Sleeper Saga and the Red Skull's first explosive battles with Captain America.

As well as this all of the original covers are presented on the front and back of the marble-decorated sleeve as well as inside the book, each shown before the tale it origionally protected.

All-in-all a good buy and a good read. I don't have to tell you it would take thousands of pounds/dollars to collect these tales individually.

So basically buy it if you can get your hands on it.

A GREAT CARTOON COLLECTION
My friend lended me this book, and once I had read through the first few cartoons, I was hooked. I loved it. I'm going to look for this book in numerous bookstores. Because I have a whacked sense of humor, these cartoons fit right in my little world. Read this book, and cheer yourself up.

SKleefeld's Assesment
This volume reprints Fantastic Four #s 1 - 10 in a high quality, hardcover format. This provides an excellent opportunity to examine Jack Kirby's great artwork without worrying about damaging the rare comics this reproduces. Stan Lee's introduction boats nothing very insightful and is written in Lee's usually commercial format
