This is a beautiful book and will be especially valued by those who have visted Mesa Verde in person. What struck me most about it (in addition to the beautiful illustrations) was that the text, while evoking a child's imagination, is also sophisticated poetry that appeals to an adult sensibility.

A lot of existentialistic analysis goes along with these intriguing pieces of work, grandly exposing the underbelly ;) of proper society. The chapter on Nietzsche explains his views on Dionysis and Apollo and how we are torn between the carnal and culture...forget any "Nietzsche for Idiots" tyoe books, and read this one!!

This marvelous book can safely be said to be the last word on the Apache Wars. The breadth and scope of the original accounts presented here - most drawn from obscure 19th Century sources - is remarkable. There are newspaper interviews with General George Crook, an account of the Chiricahua Apaches in captivity by Walter Reed (for whom Walter Reed Hospital is named), a visit with Cochise in his mountain stronghold by the teritorial governor of Arizona, and many, many more "you are there" accounts. Cozzens opens the work with an excellent historical overview of the Apache Wars. Indispensable to the Indian Wars affecionado!

I have an interest in ohio history, aspeacialy frontiersmen. The accounts represented in this book are the most accurate Ive read anywhere. The accounts of Lewis Wetzle are the most consistant ive been able to find anywhere. it makes very good reading and I use it for references as well. If you want to learn more about actual events and not just made up story lines then this is the book for you!

If you love maps, Grand Canyon, and geology, you will want to have this marvelous map on your wall. It's a big, dramatically colorful geologic map, covering the entire eastern region of the Canyon, where most of the hiking trails are located. Grand Canyon geology is simple and bold, and therefore eminently accessible to the amateur. This map, which makes it even more accessible, is a wonderful companion piece to the handful of geology books about the Canyon, and will inspire you to purchase one if you have not already done so. With a little effort, using the legend in the margin, you will soon learn to pick out every layer of rock that you can observe from the rim or encounter on your hike or float. Needless to say, the map is even more of a treasure-trove to the professional. More than a map, the beautifully printed sheet also includes several cross-sections of the Canyon, revealing what is going on beneath the surface. If you have visited the South Rim you may have seen this map. Two copies are on display in the entrance hall / cocktail lounge of the Arizona Steak House, adjacent to Bright Angel Lodge. Because of its size, it is not a map you would want to carry in your pack, but, tacked up on your wall or unrolled on a table, it will provide plenty of rock-solid lore as you plan your next Canyon adventure or remember the magic of your last visit.

The new Greenbook is a major improvement over the previous versions which were already the best in the field. The new pictures are better, and the organization is great. Placing all accessories within their own villages is much easier. Moving all the Special Designs to one section is also very helpful. The pagination makes it very easy to use the book.

I know some people want the secondary market information, but I am happy to have it mostly as a reference source with pictures. Putting everything in chronological order also lets me compare things that happened in each collection at a specific point in time.

It's really great to have a single source for all my collecting needs at a reasonable price.

This is one of the best guidebooks for a city's architecture I've seen. The entries cover not only St. Louis proper but also the entire metro area, reaching far into the suburbs in both Missouri and Illinios. Every entry has at least one photograph, a rarity for such books. The maps are clear and concise; a regional map shows where each local map is located. Also includes a number of color photographs in the introduction pages. About the only thing I would fault the book for is skipping a few of downtown's historic towers; however, the book does an excellent job of directing city explorers to St. Louis's most interesting areas.
