I just ordered several of these books to give as birthday gifts for my 9 year old daughter's friends, but I had to read through it before we gave them away. Now I may need to purchase one for our house! The stories were fun, interesting and challenging, but not so difficult that my daughter couldn't figure some out for herself. I agree with the previous review that it makes one "think outside the box" - and is a fun and valuable asset to any library!

This book consists of folktales, very concisely told, that in some sense are a riddle, a puzzle, a play on words ... These stories are presented as problems to solve.

A major strength of the book is the variety of sources of the tales - Tibetan, Aesop, Armenia, India, Grimm brothers, Ethiopian, Japan; in fact many of the stories could have come from any of a number of cultures. The illustrations add to the interest of the book for its intended audience.

The only weakness is that in only one case does it offer alternative answers. For example, in filling a room perfume works as well as light; if children are reading the book independently, they may not have the confidence to recognize that their answer is a clever as the one given in the text.

The stories are fun - parents and children should enjoy this.

This is a wonderful book that combines mathematical reasoning and logic with fascinating folktales from around the world. A book that delights kids as well as adults.

For scripture searches and their meaning from a premillennial veiwpoint, this is a great work. Small print to fill pages in 3 volumes attests to its magnitude. This work is gold in a mine of confused writers. A lifetime work that is greatly appreciated by me and my premil. brethren. Enjoy.

This biography of George Mallory written by Peter and Leni Gillman is excellent. It is exactly what it claims to be, so while climbing must be a part of any book about Mr. Mallory, this really is about the person who was a climber. This book ranges over his whole life; this is not an "Everest Book". The book does extensively document an enormous number of climbs he made, the first ascents, and of course the years he spent in his attempt to conquer Everest. The book does explore the question of whether or not he and his climbing partner Sandy Irvine were the first to Summit Everest, however like all other positions, the final proof is lacking and may or may not ever be found.

If you are looking for a great book on its own, or as a companion to this work, "Ghosts of Everest: The Search For Mallory And Irvine", is excellent. This second book is a documentary of the expedition for the answers to the fate of the two climbers, and it is extremely well done. "The Wildest Dream" also does much to clarify the rock climbing abilities of Mr. Mallory, which some historians have called into question, and have used as a basis for their position he never made it. Both these books (for this non-climber) put this issue to rest.

This book explores Mr. Mallory as a Family man, a Father, a Soldier, as well as the skills for which History remembers him. The Biography explored the vast differences between climbing as a sport today, and climbing as an activity dominated by a class system, that at times increased the danger of their activities. With any comparison today, the equipment, the risks that were taken, and the weather they survived with their primitive clothing, is nearly beyond belief. That Mallory, Irvine, and others reached such heights on Everest is nothing short of a type, effort, and endurance that put one in awe of these men.

The book also deals with those who coped with the extremely long absences these attempts required. Mallory's Wife and Family played a large if intermittent role in his shortened life, they stood by and waited for him through World War I, and his Mountaineering. We gain insight into Mallory the Professor, and other aspects of his life that were unknown to me.

After all the reading I have done it has become less an issue for me of whether the final piece of that last climb was completed. It is likely we may never know. But what Mallory and his friends did was so extraordinary, and so many years prior to the summit being reached, in many ways the final mystery may be more of a curiosity for the ages. For I believe what they did do, secures their place in History as extraordinary people.

An extremely interesting, and well-documented Biography.

I absolutely loved this book. It was wonderful to read about the whole man, from his childhood to his young years, his family, his marriage and finally his travels and climbs to Everest and of course the times in which this happened. The title is so poetic and wonderfully fitting. He was not an obsessed loner but someone who shared many interests with other great women and men of his time. As a mother of children who are just starting out in school, I was surprised and interested in his teaching methods and musings about education and schooling. Some of his thoughts are mine exactly and this is almost 100 years later. He was a great writer and reading his letters is a pleasure in itself. I wish there would be a publication of all this writings. While his homosexual exploration certainly belongs to a full bio, I find the whole sexuality discussion rather unnecessary. I think his marriage and more so his and Ruth's relationship in itself is proof - at least to me - that George Leigh Mallory was not homosexual. I feel very sad for Ruth as her life turned out to be one of suffering. She lost her mother so early, then her husband and finally, just when she found happiness again, she does not get to live it out.

I am puzzled by how easily the authors dismiss Mallory's technical abilities as insufficient for having made it to the top. While these first climbers may have certainly been inadequately dressed for the environment, I don't believe for a minute that these men were not fit or accomplished enough compared to today's climbers. Weeks on a boat, then travelling essentially on foot and horses made them fit enough (probably also by being able to acclimatize themselves for a much longer period than today)for any crack at the summit. This is a book about a man who dared to live his wildest dream against - finally - all odds and this story is worth being told.

Being someone with no interest in rock climbing, I doubted that I'd enjoy this book. Thank goodness I took the plunge anyway. Even if you have never seen a rock, this biography on George Mallory is a riviting read. Much emphasis is given to his early life as a school teacher, feminist, and friend to such luminaries as Duncan Grant, Robert Frost and Maynard Keynes. I cannot say enough about this lovely book.

The book has a very different focus on the Zapatista movement
than most others out there. It doesn't look at it from a present
time point of view and what do the Zapatistas mean, what do they
want, how do they work....

It looks simply at the history of the indigenous people of Chiapas
and their relationship with the mexican governement and tries to
make sense and explain why it is that the zapatista rebellion happened in Chiapas.

Very interesting and well written

This book is amazing, definetely one of the best out there. Dont be fooled by its cheap price, its well worth three times that amount if youre an avid chiapas rebel. For those of you looking for your first Chiapas book, this is definetely the one to choose.

The Zapatista revolution has been the subject of many books, articles, and opinions, but this book covers the subject in the most objective and thorough journalistic manner.

This work by Peter Kropotkin's is, I say this without reservations, a work of genius and an amazing reflection on the life of an amazing man. Kropotkin's stories of his childhood and his relations with his servants and other lower-calss individuals (he was born a prince) are very interesting, as are his tales of exploration. His version of anarcho-socialism is very intriguing, largely because he bears no hate or grudge towards anyone and he is a very gentle man. In his book, it becomes clear (without him saying it, of course) that he did not recognize just how unique of a man he was. This book is filled with marvelous anecdotes, from cutting political commentary to fascinating stories of journeys down the Amur River to a splendid little collection of stupid Russian Spy stories. This book is fantastic.

Prince Piotr Alekseyevich Kropotkin, 1842-1921, was a Russian geographer and anarchist. He came from a wealthy princely family and as a boy was a page to the czar. Repelled by court life, he obtained permission to serve as an army officer in Siberia, where his explorations and scientific observations established his reputation as a geographer. After returning to European Russia, he became an adherent of the Bakuninist faction of the narodniki and engaged in clandestine propaganda activities until arrested in 1874. Two years later he escaped to Western Europe, where he worked with various anarchist groups until his imprisonment in France (1883). Pardoned in 1886, partly as the result of the popular clamor for his release, he moved to England and spent the next 30 years mainly as a scholar and writer developing a coherent anarchist theory. In his most famous book, Mutual Aid (1902), he attacked T. H. Huxley and the Social Darwinists for their picture of nature and human society as essentially competitive. He insisted that cooperation and mutual aid were the norms in both the natural and social worlds. From this perspective he developed a theory of social organizationin Fields, Factories and Workshops (1898) and elsewherethat was based upon communes of producers linked with each other through common custom and free contract. Returning to Russia following the February Revolution of 1917, he attempted to engender support for a continued Russian effort in World War I and to combat the rising influence of Bolshevism. Following the Bolshevik triumph in the October Revolution (1917), he retired from active politics. Consistently nonviolent in his anarchist beliefs, Kropotkin,as both thinker and man, was admired and acclaimed by many far removed from anarchist circles.

This intelligent and kind man all too often falls through the cracks of history. People forget that there was a completely different school of socialist thought that existed concurrently with the ideas of Marx. Kropotkin, like many others who believed in the ability of people to make their own economic relations, had the distinction of being persecuted by people on both sides of the political spectrum. Yet his book is remarkable for its lack of self-pity or resentment. The book is dense and full of the musings of a highly educated man of the late 19th century who indulged many other interests besides politics. His journey is remarkable, and we can only hope that he will become better known.

If you liked 1984, you will have to read this book. Don't worry about the price, you will never regret buying this book, no matter how much you pay for it.

Orwell's Revenge is a literate masterpiece, written impressively by Peter Huber. Modern thoughts are given a new outlook in Huber's amazing work. Peter Huber is truly a genious and his work should be read immediately.

I have been fond of the negative utopias for some years - Orwell's "1984" being my favourite. You might imagine the excitement I felt upon seeing a sequel! At first read of Huber's sequel I was, however, outraged! What gaul to plagerize Orwell as this book does ... until, as I read on, I was dumbfounded to realize that this is *exactly* what Orwell *would* have appreciated - the symetry, the self-reference, the genius of Huber to become his own Winston Smith and rewrite the story is perfect. Huber does, indeed, add his own original touches: by incorporating Orwell's other writings into the work, thus giving us insight into Orwell's evolution and psychology, and more cogently,by updating The Party and Oceania into today's world of political correctness, multiculturalism, the green movement and other frightening signs that Big Brother is alive and well. Huber, however, holds out the hope that the "telescreen" (i.e. the Internet) will be the very tool that undoes the power of Big Brother/Big Government/Intellectual Enslavement that masquerade as today's fashionable causes ( political correctness, eco-green-fascism, and multiculturalism) by providing true freedom of thought, expression and commerce - all anathema to centralized control. I would like everyone to know that this book is super great. I was like so confused at first, but now everything is crystal clear. I learned that fertilization in a plant occurs in it's uterus and after gastrulation occurs the spores shoot out of the carpel and undergo a meiotic phase called the acrosomal stage. So like, if you're stumped about which bio book to get, you should totally get this one!

The Biology Laboratory Manual by Guttman, Vodopich, Johnson, Raven, and Moore provides an easy to follow approach to introductory biology. It features many activities that can be completed on average between 2 and 3 hours. There are many photos and diagrams that are in full color, many pre-laboratory type questions, and a good amount of questions that are best answered during lab or after lab. This book is ideal for an advanced high school biology course or a freshman or sophomore college biology class. Unlike a fair amount of the laboratory texts out there, this one accompanies most biology books very well. Thus, the laboratory portion of class tends to blend very well with the lecture portion.

This gorgeous book is unlike any other children's book I have ever seen. It is richer, more varied in its offerings and in its fundmental concept, which is a celebration of books. I can imagine enjoying this book with children of any age from newborn all the way through early teens. It expresses a tender love of both language and image that I find deeply evocative. Imagine a book that offers a myriad of possibilities on every page, in a beautiful, nonlinear way, as different from Richard Scarry as possible. This is a wondrous book about books.

This book is fantastic for teaching the power and purpose for reading. Students of all ages can see how virtual reality is not only on a computer monitor but also between the pages of a book! The words are few, but the paintings are outstanding provoking imagination and conversation about the power of thought and the written word. It is a powerful teaching tool for teaching students of all ages, k-post college.

Fritz Peter's remarkable account of his experience with Gurdjieff is a genuine classic. Straightforward, perceptive, and filledwith numerous "scenes" that illuminate his unique experience with one of the great figures ofour time, I highly recommend thisbook not only to anyone interested in Gurdjieffs teachings,but anyone interested in a fascinating tale

A wonderful account of Peter's stay in Gurdjieff's commune when he was 11 years old. He brings Gurdjieff to life and makes Gurdjieff's work available and understandable. His child's eye view of the experiment makes it all the more compelling... I loved this book and recommend it highly.

Well, if you have a young reader who is looking for a book about the Father of Our Country that is out of the ordinary, tell them to look no farther than "George Washington's Cows." By the end of this collection of humorous rhymes about the rather strange animals at George Washington's Mount Vernon farm the future President is standing with his head in hand, sighing, and complaining "My cows wear dresses, my pigs wear wigs, and my sheep are more learned than me." At least the pigs help out around the house, which is more than can be said for those smart sheep. David Small must have a little Jonathan Swift in him, for this is not exactly a reverential portrait of George Washington, who might have been first in war and first in peace but who takes a back seat to the animals in this cute little volume (I like the wicked little smiles on the pigs the best). However, I think parents will appreciate the book's final punch line a lot more than the young readers for who this work is intended.

David Small is a wonderfully imaginative author. *Fenwick's Suit*, *Imogene's Antlers*, and *Paper John* by Small are also terrific children's books, but this one is just hilarious. My four-year-old daughter nearly fell off my lap laughing at the pictures of the pigs in their powdered wigs, and my eight-year-old son appreciated the wry humor. Few children's books are illustrated as beautifully as this one, and the rhyme and rhythm are delightful. A picture book not to be missed.
