Gems of stories!
Typically an anthology only holds a story or two that stands out, but this book differs: one, that there are actually 6 stories rather than only 4, and second, all 6 stories are entertaining, well-written, and well-plotted. Dorothea Donley's "Taste of London" is a fairy tale of two cousins spending the season with distant cousin Lord Aldford and his friend, who help Miss Amberly resolve the scandal of her family's past, with help from the Prince Regent. Jean R. Ewing's "Notorious Lord" sends a Viscount in his friend Mr. Grenville's place to woo an "antidote" of a prospective bride, except that the bride has also switched places with her friend Miss Fraser to avoid the expected Mr. Grenville. But the clever Miss Fraser has already recognized Viscount Beaumarais! In Paula Tanner Girard's "A Matter of Honor", a wild Irish princess is forced to marry a duke according to an ancient agreement between the Irish lords and the duke's ancestors. But the language barrier and a little trickery wed the duke to the girl before he can tell her about his betrothed before he carts her to London! In Jenna Jones' "Duke of Diamonds", a duke intends to humiliate a house of scheming, marriage-minded women...then too late discovers the one innocent in the pack of cats. In Meg-Lynn Roberts' "For All Eternity", Christina Granford had seemed to love Viscount Fulbrooke those years ago during the season, but had broken his heart when telling him she was already betrothed. Now a widow, they've been forced to stop avoiding each other... In Marcy Stewart's "Lady Constance Wins", Constance's three adorable older cousins meddle and convince an American to pose as competition to a man informally promised to Constance...but stalling in asking her for a formal pledge. This is a great anthology to curl up with in a warm bed on a rainy day.

Lords of the Cold: Mountaineering Tales in Verse

If you are ever stuck in a tent.....
When the author of this book was climbing Denali he and his party were stuck in an inevitable long storm and "John Christopher" kept the climbing party from going stir-crazy by reciting the wonderful verse from this book.

In the vein of Robert Service, these poems in verse capture the beauty, the agony, the good times and bad of climbing big walls and sitting out big storms.

"John" should know because he climbed 4 of the seven summits before his untimely death in 1997.

If you like mountains, mountain climbing and wonderfully descriptive verse, get this book. Put it in your back pack. Because, as you know, you never know when you may be sitting there for days on end, staring at the ripstop and wishing you had something heroic to read. Submitted by Bill Hoke for Dennis Burke

A wonderful and colorful romp!
John Lord writes a thoroughly entertaining and enlightening romp through the extraordinarily garish halls and manicured grounds of some of the most ridiculously wealthy, ostentatious, and frivolous people who ever walked this planet.

First of all, Mr Lord's command of language is impeccable, making this a joyous read. Second of all, Lord's wry wit and humor brand every page a verbal fun-house. Thirdly, mixing the writer's penchant for exhaustive research, his writing style and the subject matter consisting of royal Indian fops who have so much wealth and so much time on their hands - this is a potent brew for brilliant reading.

I'm picking up the book this summer for a re-read. Thank you John Lord!!! Read John Lord's other books; "Duty, Honor, Empire" and "Winston Churchill" co-authored with Jack LaVien.

The Silver Kings of the Comstock Lode
I first read the "Silver Kings: The Lives and Times of MacKay, Fair, Flood, and O'Brien, Lords of the Nevada Comstock Lode", because there was a family story that James G. Fair might be a lost relative. If he is it's quite distant, but the book was so interesting that I've since read everything I could get my hands on about the Comstock Lode and it's characters. Virginia City really did more as the birth place of the myths and truths of the Old West than did Tombstone or Dodge City. I am also an "Earp" buff and have read much available on the "Gun Fight" related characters. Even Samuel Clemens, later known as Mark Twain, was a reporter for the Virginia City newspaper during his early days. The book was fantastic. I'm glad to see it in reprint as I will give it as gifts to some of my friends. I had hunted long and hard for my old copy. If you like stories of the Old West you will enjoy this one. And the stories are true.

A Must for Tolkien Fans!
Colin Duriez's "Tolkien and the Lord of the Ring: A Guide to Middle Earth" is an impressive book about the Hobbit, the Lord of the Rings, and the Silmarillion. It's divided into 4 parts.

Part 1: The Mind Behind Middle-earth: Includes background info about Tolkien, his life and work.

Part 2: The Book of the Century: A guide to LOTR, how it relates to the Silmarillion, etc. Basically a recap, in case you're a bit fuzzy.

Part 3: An A-Z of Tolkien's Middle-earth: I found this very helpful; I could look up my favorite people, places, events, and things quickly and effortlessly. This is especially helpful for those currently reading either LOTR or the Silmarillion to get extra info on what they're reading. If you are intimately familiar with the books, however, it would be more reference than new facts.

Part 4: A Look Behind Tolkien's Life and Work: Most interesting part to me. Evaluates key themes, concepts, and images in Tolkien. Allegory (or lack thereof), Christianity, Posession and Power are some of the themes explored by Duriez. Then it talks about key people and places in Tolkien's life.

It's more geared to people who are more interested in the book and Tolkien's writings than in the recent movies, so it shouldn't be confused with books like, "The Magical Worlds of Lord of the Rings."

I recommend it to anyone interested in Lord of the Rings.
