Stop! Do not buy this book- "updated" version is obsolete
I give the book three stars due to content, but the numbers are all obsolete. The information is now seven years old! OBRA laws have changed, gifting laws have changed, estate tax laws,...you name it. Save your money and buy soemthing that has been updated NO EARLIER than January '03. I am a financial planner specializing in this area, so I cannot- with good conscience- recommend that people adhere to the outdated information in the book- talk to an advisor who is up-to-speed on the new rules.

Wonderful guide
I read 6 different books on this and irrevocable trusts when my dad went into a nursing home. This one was by far the easiest to understand. My parents had a revocable trust that was not worth the paper it was printed on. This book saved my family a lot of money. Unfortunately I lent it to someone who never returned it, so I am buying another copy to give to a friend.

Mandatory if your loved one is to enter a nursing home
Alexander Bove's book is one of the few out there that really gives you the information you need when dealing with the finances of admitting a loved one into a nursing home. After I read this book, my family and I went to an attorney who "specializes" in elder law. This turned out to be incorrect, and the advice he gave was incomplete and just plain wrong. If we hadn't had Bove's book at our disposal, we would have unknowingly accepted the other lawyer's recommendations without realizing that they would have cost a huge portion of needed funds. DON'T ASSUME THAT AN "ELDER LAW ATTORNEY" KNOWS ALL THE INTRICACIES OF MEDICAID LAW! READ THIS BOOK! (And THEN double-check the most up-to-date laws to make sure nothing has changed since this printing.)

Some Facts are Lies
My father personally knows some of the people that were caught in the middle of this investigation. Wrongdoing was going on, however; the way reporters painted the picture of how some people had to live their lives due to this investigation were untrue. There were no bodyguards for Barbara or A. Cowen. No black roses or death threats sent to their offices. The mystery man throughout the whole event? It's no mystery to me, I know. Trust me, prosecutors couldn't find any evidence towards this man because there was no evidence. Reporters found a way to make this spectacle look entertaining, and that's all it was...entertainment.

The system works!
This was a very interesting book discussing the fall of the former Governor of Oklahoma for illegal actions taken while in office. The book gives a great introduction to some of the problems with our judicial system but shows that this system ultimately works in the end. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Oklahoma politics, federal prosecution, or law.

A PRINCIPLED FOE OF ENTRENCHED POWER
Listening to these exerpts from several of Cockburn's talks is a relief from the 24/7 idiocy of the cable networks and what passes for talk radio. He covers lots of topics of recent interest(the stolen election of 2000, Clinton's disgusting final days, the proper response to 9-11) and each time illuminates a part of the story ignored by the mainstream press. My only complaint is that he was much to soft on that miserable cheerleader for our Warlord-in-Chief, Christopher Hitchens, a man who reacted to the attacks of 9-11 by throwing overboard just about all his principles. He really should have been more thoroughly scorched - that section was not sufficiently "incendiary"!

Citizenship Today: Global Perspectives and Practices

All About Rights--Very Little About Loyalty or Duties

I have mixed feelings about this book. On the most positive side, it is the only, and therefore the best, treatment of the issues of citizenship that I could identify, and that is why I bought it. The range of authoritative essays that have been brought together is very worthy, and anyone contemplating this topic must take this work into account.

On the other hand, as I went through chapter after chapter, what I tended to see was an awful lot of academic whining about how the world is getting too complex and too multi-cultural to be able to pin someone down to just one citizenship, let them have many. Reality check needed here. Governments exist to preserve and protect very specific moral, ideological, and cultural values, and governments are the means by which a Republic finances what are called external diseconomies--those things that are needed for the common good but not profitable for the private sector to do.

There are glimmers here and there of how one might better integrate new immigrants and otherwise promote good citizenship, but overall what this book is missing is a major commitment to thinking about how one draws the line between nationalized citizens truly loyal to their newly chosen nation-state, and those who choose to retain another primary citizenship and simply enjoy the bounty of the land they have chosen to VISIT....

Of all the contributions, the one that stood out for me was by Adrian Favell, on "Integration Policy and Integration Research in Europe: A Review and Critique." Despite the title, the heart of this chapter concerns the information "sources and methods" that underlie conclusions about citizenship and the policies on citizenship. There is a great deal of meat in this chapter, and it could useful guide the next book in what I hope will become a series.

I like this book. It forced me to think and it certainly opened my eyes to how we are letting a whole bunch of people debate the nature of citizenship without ever really being committed to the idea that an oath of loyalty is fundamental--as universal service should be fundamental, not to flesh out the military, but rather to provide a common foundation for knowing one another intimately, for respecting one another from that common ground. How one defines citizenship is fundamental to the future of every nation--this book both enlightens and frightens.

Laws of Corporations and Other Business Enterprises
Published in Hardcover by West Wadsworth (1991)
Authors: Harry G. Henn and John R. Alexander
Amazon base price: $48.00
Average review score:

Henn's Hornbook on Corps is a good review of corporate law.
Harry Henn's original (1970) hornbook on The Law of Corporations, and its updates with John Alexander, is a concise general review of corporate law. It has good citations to the fundamental cases, and over the years has been updated with new cites. However, with the pace of recent corporate changes, the "newest" edition of 1996 does not provide the most current review and the reader is relegated to other corporate resources. Henn/Alexander & West Publishing should form a dedicated consortium to produce an annual supplement & compilation of the prior year's events.

Great book for the lay person. Easy to follow.
Colleen Alexander-Roberts has done a lot of leg-work for you. She has written a book that touches on many, many aspects of adoption. The book is written in easy, flowing language. It is a great benefit to pick up a book that a lay person can understand. So many books are written in "legalese" which is very frustrating to those of us without legal training. Thanks, Colleen, for writing such an informative, easy-to-understand book for all us Moms-to-be (and dads-to-be).

The Nanny and Domestic Help Legal Kit (Nanny and Domestic Help Legal Kit)

Comprehensive and easy to understand
This book is very concise and takes the guess work out of hiring in home help. Due to the nature of state laws, it is unable to give specific info regarding the state you live in, but given that limitation, it does a good job at explaining everything else you need to consider when hiring someone in your home. I would recommend this book as a good place to start if you're thinking about hiring domestic help!

an "I told you so" Book
This book is one of a few books that unfortunately, not enough took seriously when it was printed. Now, it's an excellent addition to the must - read list of any one interested in nonproliferation. Divided into several sections, the book discusses every facet of nuclear terrorism, the how, the where, and the why. Even if some of the intelligence is dated, it still is well thought out, written and presented. A topical reference for today's climate.

diplomatic considerations of Human Rights
The persistence of human rights violations around the world clearly demonstrates the need to focus more attention on preventive action.

Consequently, international organizations are increasingly strengthening the preventive dimension of their human rights activities. Preventive mechanisms have also emerged and continue to gain ground at the national level.

These new realities, however, seem to have received little attention by the academic community. Yet they raise many important issues, which need to be further explored. The above considerations prompted the Marangopoulos Foundation for Human Rights to mark its twentieth anniversary by organizing an International Colloquy on the topic of the prevention of human rights violations.

The present Volume contains contributions by the participants, based on the reports they presented at the Colloquy, substantially revised and updated. It constitutes the first attempt at a systematic analysis of the subject of the prevention of human rights violations, focusing on the following five aspects: conventional regimes, non-conventional monitoring mechanisms, international commissioners and Ombudsmen, national Ombudsmen and human rights institutions and the development of a human rights culture. It closes with a theoretical synthesis of the various approaches to the prevention of human rights violations, focusing on the context, the concept and function, as well as methods and techniques of prevention.

Gets the Job Done
The information is presented in a sequential format and is easily understood until the last couple of paragraphs of each case where the authors give their opinion of the court's ruling. It is difficult to understand what the courts actually decided. I often found myself wishing there would be a simple statement giving the final verdict. It is a good read until the ambiguous verdict, than frustration sets in.
