Greek cooking at its American best

Out of this world.
I bought my 'first' copy of this book in (about) 1982, at the Greek Festival in downtown Salt Lake City. As a 'not so hot' cook at the time, and since I enjoyed going over to a Greek, friends mother's house on Sundays, I made many things out of it, by just going 'word for word'. Sad to say, the book, among most everything in my house was stolen. In 2001, another friend of mine, still living in Salt Lake, sent me another copy, which, got 'lost'. This lovely woman, Ellen V. Furgis, having heard of my 'plight', sent me a WONDERFULLY INSCRIBED + SIGNED COPY of it personally. Ellen Furgis, not only puts 'heart + love' into her recipies, but actually puts it into 'life' in general. After all, if a 'little Irish/Jewish girl can make these turn out wonderfully, anyone can. I cannot recommend this book or her, highly enough.

Fabulous book for kids!
This is an outstanding book for kids and helps them learn a lot about different world cultures. The activities are fun and creative - I haven't seen a book like this in a long time. The 'good will message flag' activity from Tibet sends a wonderful message and is fun to make. In addition to the activities the author provides plenty of cultural information that kids and adults will find facinating. This book will be enjoyed by teachers, parents and kids from around the world.

Best all around advice for anyone in the kitchen
This book is like the Chicken Soup series but for good practical home use. It covers how to remove burnt stains from pots, to removing wine stains from carpets, from easy ways to store bacon to how to keep cheese from going bad. You name it, its in this book. This belongs in every household.

This is a great book!
This book is awsome! You will not believe what kind of things it tells you until you get it. It tells you everything from how to get peanut butter out of your hair to how to get a dishwasher smelling fresh again. My mother had the "Mary Ellen's Best of Helpful Hints" book for many years, and I would always call her to find out how to do things from the book, and so I decided that it was time to get myself one. This book is so good! You have to get one!

Very Best from Hallmark: Greeting Cards Through the Years
Published in Hardcover by Harry N. Abrams (1988)
Authors: Ellen Stock Stern and Hallmark Cards Inc
Amazon base price: $29.95
Average review score:

The very best of Hallmark.
A gorgeous book of greeting cards that will delight fans of Americana and others interested in popular culture. The 750 color cards are arranged by year in obvious chapter headings, Teen Age, Happy Birthday, Wedlock, Bon Voyage etc. Ellen Stern writes an informative twelve page introduction to the ccompany.

The chapter on flowers shows Hallmark's best selling card, a basket of pansies issued in 1939. I'm a fan of Christmas cards and I was pleased to see nine cards painted by Norman Rockwell. Haddon Sundblom, who painted the Coca-Cola Santa also has a showing.

Turning over the pages it soon becomes apparent that from the start Hallmark set themselves a very high standard of design, thanks to the founder Mr Joyce C Hall and if you want to follow the history of the company in cards this the book for you.

Expand Your Mind
This book is the only one of twelve editions that I have read. It is absolutely amazing. Not only does it question our common place world but it bends, strechtes and recreates you mind. I am looking to buy the book so I can read it all and have the stories at my finger tips. I am also going to read the next editions. Try one story, you will be hooked!

I'm still borrowing it from my father....
My father bought this when I was a little girl new, and he read a few stories in it until i started taking an interest in it. He let me borrow it and i read most of the stories in it, read them again, read the rest of the stories, read all of them again, and again and again, well, lets just say it's been years now and i'm STILL reading it and i'm STILL borrowing it. I love all of it, especially the story by Joyce Carol Oates "Family" which introduced me to a whole new style and level of thinking that has been one of the greatest influences on my writing. I still cry sometimes when i read it. Even sometimes when i just think about it. Same with "The edge of the world". I've read a lot of books and loved them, still read them, like Enders Game by Orson Scott Card, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy (the whole very inappropriately named trilogy of five books) by Douglas Adams (RIP), and a lot of Kurt Vonnegut Jr, Theodore Sturgeon, and even some by people in the book (Tanith Lee and Joyce Carol Oates) but none of these have been able to catch my heart and mind quite as much as this book. If you have the chance at all you should get this book. I give it my very highest reccomendation.

perfect gift
My wife always has huge holiday parties and insists on buying individual gifts for each person which is pricey and extremely time consuming -- not to mention the wrapping. This year she is purchasing 20 books to give away as presents to all her friends -- finally one gift that is great for a lot of people. The front page has a spot that you can write in the name of the person you are giving it to.
It's a great book - a perfect gift for friends -- and why is a guy writing this? Because I handle the money in this family and it's the first holiday I'm not dredding the financial burden of gift giving -- so I though I would share the wealth.

Touching and Tender
The stories collected in this book come from people of all walks of life, from celebrities to CEOs to Joe/Jane Blow, so it's an interesting and insightful mix of memories. It was surprising to me to see such sentiment from the corporate bigwigs featured--this is not a group of people you'd expect would turn to mush over Mom.

A great gift idea for Mother's Day--including the ability to write a glowing tribute to your own Mom on the dedication page provided in the front of the book.

What a heartfelt book!
I absolutely loved this collection of beautiful and loving stories about everyone's favorite person: mom. From well known celbrities like Judy Collins, to ordinary people of all ages and backrounds, this book takes all their stories and puts them together in a georgeous book that my mother loved. I would suggest this book as a present for all moms on Mothers Day, her birthday, or just to say that you love her and she is "the Best Mom Ever".
