Old World Ways
If you liked Laura in the Little House book series, then you will like Gina in this delightful story. You will learn about how things were in New York City during the late 1800's for an Italian immigrant named Gina. I highly recommend this book if you enjoy learning about this time period in our history.

Appreciation from an Art teacher
I find it hard to believe two things -- one, that Patience Brewster has never won a Caldecott, and two that so many of the books that she has illustrated are out of print.
We've missed the boat! The illustrations in this book are simply magical. What fun to have a new fairytale!

A Review by Bill Montilla, Class 5-506
I read this book called 'The Slump' by Steven Kroll. I picked this book because I like to read books about baseball. I like playing baseball and I wanted to read a book about baseball.

This book reminds me of when I was on a baseball team and I always came in late just like Luke in the book. He always comes late and always strikes out. At the beginning, baseball was fun, but then the coach started to scream at Luke.

One time, there was a game and I struck out. Then I thought "why do I always strike out and why is everyone angry?" The next day, I came early to practice and I did not strike out. The next day I was playing better than before and everyone was glad for me.

Luke is my favorite character because he reminds me of myself when i used to be so unfavorable at baseball. My favorite part of the book is when Luke gets mad and he has to come in early to start practicing. This is my favorite part because I feel good for Luke and I know he is going to be an outstanding player.

I would recommend this book to people who enjoy baseball. You should read this book to find out if Luke becomes a remarkable baseball player. I wonder why Luke wants to be a baseball player? The lesson this book taught me was that if you practice you may improve at baseball.

Great Story of Sharing and Caring
This story was is great to teach you how a little bit of team work can get you where you want to be. In this story, two mice work together to grow a huge pumpkin, although they didn't know they were helping eachother. Each mouse put everything he had into making the pumpkin grow and be the best. Clayton the house mouse wanted to grow the biggest pumpkin and to win the grand prize at the town pumpkin contest. Desmond the field mouse wants to grow a pumpkin to make into the biggest and best jack-o-lantern ever. They work together and grow a pumplin bigger than their houses.
This story teaches you more than one thing. The first is that if you are determined to do something, and put your heart and soal into it, you can do whatever you want to do. In this case, grow a huge pumpkin. The other is that with teamwork, your job gets done faster, and sometimes makes the project easier. This is a very good book , and I recomend it, not just to kids, but to people of every age.

Sickness won't hold you back
This story invovles Easter and what kids get on Easter....or will they? I think this story was very creative. Wilbur gets sick on Easter Eve. This makes everything much harder for the Easter bunny. Others try to do what he does, but they can't. Wilbur is a very big bunny, and that is why he's chosen as the Easter bunny. The story involved some suspense at parts. I like how his friends distracted everyone from seeing Wilbur. Wilbur ended up getting sick on Easter Eve. That made for a very interesting delivery of eggs. I thought it was a good book. I would recommend it to kids to read.

class assignment
Wilbur is busy getting everything ready for Easter. He made new baskets, painted the eggs, and made lots of candy. Everything was all set to go, until Easter Eve, Wilbur gets sick. His friends try to help him but it is too big of a job for them. Can they save Easter, or won't there be one this year?

This was a very adventurous book. I really enjoyed this version of how our Easter traditions started. The illustratins were great and added to the story. Not only is this an adventure, but it also has some humor involved. I highly recommend this book to you.

Just how many places can a Great Dane hide ?
Richard comes home to his apartment one day to find his Great Dane missing ! Is he in the closet or under the rug ? He eventually finds him , but no at home. Cute little story about a boy and his dog, er dogs.Read it and you'll see .This is my personal copy from my childhood.I love the bathroom picture.

Wonderful Children's Story
This is an outstanding children's book from my childhood. I can remember it being read on Captain Kangaroo. It has great illistrations and add to the story's delight.

Milton is a great dane (dog) who has wandered away and no one can find him. His owner has looked high and low. It is a sweet story about family and losing something very special. And most of all it is a story of new life and love. If I tell anymore I will spoil the story. (don't worry Milton is found and is just fine.)

It is a hard to find book but well worth the search. I enjoyed sharing something from my childhood with my own child.

The Easter Bunny decides to get a new job this year...
One year, just a few days before Easter, Wilbur, the great big Easter Bunny, had finished all of his work early. All he had left to do was deliver the eggs and candy. But Wilbur was tired of being the Easter Bunny and decided to look for a new job. When Wilbur got a job working for Morgan the Magician, it was up to his four bunny friends--Hector, Francine, Charles and Henrietta--to figure out a way to have Wilbur ready to go on Easter Morning.

Young children will enjoy the exploits of Wilbur and his friends, especially with the illustrations of the silly bunnies by Janet Stevens (there is something endearing about the ears she draws on all these bunnies). If your children like this tale, then you should track down "The Big Bunny and the Easter Eggs," in which Kroll and Stevens tell what happens when the Easter Bunny gets sick on Easter eve. However, you might save that one for next year. No reason to make the little ones doubly nervous about the Easter Bunny making an appearance this year.

A heartwarming, family-friendly Father's Day story
Dad wakes up on Father's Day to find surprises hidden all over the house by his family, Lenny, Linda, Laurie, Louise, Larry, baby Lester, and Mom. Each one has done something special such as fixing breakfast or doing chores, but as Dad discovers each new surprise, one of the kids (or mom) presents him with a gift pertaining to his favorite baseball team, the Green Sox. Finally, in the newly washed car, Mom drives the whole family to attend a Green Sox game, where they enjoy a pizza together.

This heartwarming, family-friendly story, written at a 2.5 reading level, fills a need for Father's Day books for elementary school readers. Unfortunately, at the time of this review it is out-of-print.

Mom rates it 2 stars, baby rates it 5
I don't know if this book will have staying power, but in our first week of owning it, my 20-month-old daughter has asked me to read it, on average, I'd say 10 times a day. The illustrations are cute but the text is annoying. Tucker is this undisciplined dog who runs through the house knocking into everyone and everything with a "Wham". At the end the family says he's too lovable to scold. The somewhat dubious message gets redeemed for me when my daughter first points at the last picture of the girl hugging the dog, with Tucker's tail wagging furiously (or "whamming" in this case), and laughs, "Tail", then points at the two of them and says with a note of pure delight in her voice, "Happy."

If you've got a dog loving toddler, they'd probably enjoy this book. Helpful read-aloud tip: I found it much less annoying to read when I edited out every third "Wham".

Oh, Tucker
A girl named Thelma called Tucker, her dog, in for breakfast. What happends once the dog is inside will shock you! I like the illustrations that Scott Nash used. If you want to find out what happens you should read this book.

A PERFECT DOG STORY!
Oh, Tucker! is a splendid children's story. It is a short read, but anyone who has a puppy or a dog can truly relate to this one! I teach first grade and my children LOVE to hear this story. They LOVE to participate in the WHAMS! throughout the story. The illustrations are WONDERFUL. I have put it on my all-time favorite list for children's books.
