Object-Oriented Programming in Common Lisp: A Programmer's Guide to CLOS

A good way to understand "why CLOS?"
This is a nice "tutorial style" walk through much of the functionality of CLOS.

It doesn't get into examples that are of _spectacular_ complexity, either in size or in difficulty of concept, but that strikes me as being just fine. The dialect of CLOS in use predates the final version that was released, so a few examples require a little modification to work with modern Lisp releases.

If you're looking to get into the sophistication of redefining your own metaobject protocols, the MOP book is surely more suitable. But for most of us who just need to figure out what CLOS is good for, this book provides a very nice presentation of that.

The cover says it all
You are going to get precisely what is advertised: a good guide to object-oriented programming in Common Lisp, no less, no more.

A worthwhile reference
Keene covers CLOS thoroughly and clearly. A classic. Can't say much else. If you care about your LISP programming craft, buy this book.

Better than the first, but...
This book was definitely better than the author's first. It was longer and obviously more sophisticated, but I still think it was just a little too shallow. She falls for this guy and rambles on for 50 pages about how much she loves him and then all of a sudden, she meets this guy on the internet and the other doesn't even exist anymore. She later dumps this guy and then after a long (not) period of soul-searching, she finally finds her true love in the guy she never expected to fall for and they live happily ever after. Blachhhh.

Awsome!
Wow, "what my mom doesnt know" is among one of the TOP books I read recently. It tells the story of Sophie, a 15 years old girl. Through Sonya Sones, I was able to see the life and struggles of a teenage girl such as, fights with her mother, her appearances, and her love life, which I also found parts of me inside of Sophie as a 16 years old. As the story progresses, I felt as if I was living through the experiences also. Its mainly because of the format that the book is written in. Sonya Sones tells the mind and feelings of Sophie through direct, bold and honest poems. With so little words she describes the important moments clearly and perfectly but yet the words she chose were also so powerful. You would honestly have to read it yourself to understand what I really mean. I finished this book in no time, because the author really knows how to let me keep flipping onto the next page, wanting to find out what happens next. Aniways, enough said, this is a really sweet and touching story of a teenage girl whom I believe all of us would discover little pieces of ourselves from her, no matter past or future.

~* the perfect book on the mind of a teenage girl!

Fine rendition of My Fair Lady
In 1875 County Galway, Ireland, Callie O'Doule lives at home with her widowed father and earns chump change toiling as a laundress mostly for the Connemara old squire Kevin Callahan as she has since she turned thirteen. However, Callie worries about making legitimate money ever since the squire died six weeks ago. American Trent Lanigan, handling the estate of the old squire, hits Callie with a broadside when he tells her that she is Callahan's daughter rather than the child of her beloved "Da" and will inherit a fortune once he teaches her how to act like a lady.

Trent hid one stipulation of the will from Callie. She must marry his choice of a spouse. However, Trent falls in love with his Pygmalion even as Callie becomes the toast of the season. Callie loves her Professor Higgins even if he tries to dampen anything between them. He knows she must marry someone else or lose everything.

LANIGAN'S LADY is an Irish equivalent of My Fair Lady with the prime difference being Callie starts much closer to being a lady than the Cockney Eliza. The story line is fun though one twist too many will leave the audience wondering why. Still the characters entertain the readers with a special battle of the sexes that never eases up until Trent and Callie must decide whether she should be LANIGAN'S LADY. Sonya Birmingham takes quite a risk updating a tale that has twice become a classic story, but does a fine job so that even GBS would join in the accolades.

Irish "My Fair Lady"
Sonya Birmingham's latest novel is an exciting Irish twist on the "My Fair Lady" theme. Callie O'Doule, a spirited Irish laundress, takes the part of Liza Doolittle. Her Professor Higgins is Trent Lanigan, a much more interesting man than the original 'Enry! As always, Sonya weaves rich characters and sensuous details together to lead us through the lush Irish countryside.

This is a great book that you should read right away
I loved the beginning of the book a smart, sassy mountain girl who rides into to town on an old ratty looking mule wearing buckskins and kinda just blows off the snide remarks of the so called "well-mannered,civilized" people of the town. She then manages to get a child who hasn't talked or smiled or showed much of any emotion to anyone, not even his own father, in almost a year to smile and accept her in less than an hour of her arrival in town. Also the fact that she is working for the man, Stephan Wentworth, her family hates because of his fathers, the old and terrible Wentworth, terrible logging conditions that crippled her twin brother and the only reason she stays on is to earn enough money to get her sick grandma a good doctors attention. Plus the way she gets him to open up with stuff like a magic garden and magical tricks. And the way she practically blurts out her entire (well not entire) history to Stephan when she first meets him because shes nervous.

Stephen Wentworth can't believe how this mountain girl, who believe's in folklore and magical things, got his son to start talking again in less than two weeks after her arrival. Or how she had captivated his thoughts.

I think you get the picture of how good the book is.

I think the part i liked best about the book was the way she handled the children and townswomen's remarks in the beginning. She handled it in a sort of way that made me want to read more of the book. I don't think i can explain in words how much i really liked it but i just know that you should read it and judge for yourself.

But to warn you it does kinda start to slow down or at least for me it did. I hope you decide to buy the book.

A sweet innocence
This is my favorite book of Sonya Birmingham's! Jubilee Jones has a sweet, innocent and child-like quality. She makes you remember that there's more to life than financial achievements or what's often touted as "success." From her mountain home to Asheville and back again, she leads Stephen Wentworth on a magic journey to rediscover his true self.

One Of The Rare & Finest Cookbooks You Will Ever Find!
The book, "Growing up in a Korean Kitchen," by Hi Soo Shin Hepinstall is without a doubt a treasury of recipes you will never regret making for guests or family.

I believe this one of the firsts Cookbooks on Korean cooking too. You will find it very helpful in cooking all kinds of diverse cuisine for healthy enjoyment with your family and friends. I especially enjoyed the details of each recipe and how she used both English and Korean terms naming the dishes. And the suggestions on preparation or finishing the dishes is what many Cookbooks lack, but not this one.

Whether it is the Kmichi Soup to Seasoned Spinach to the Art of Korean Barbecue, you will find this book very rare indeed to supplement Asian Gastronomy.

What is interesting as well is how many of the recipes were low fat in content and very nourishing and filling. These recipes alone will help anyone with Heart Disease, Diabetes and looking for a healthy diet. Korean cookery uses much cabbage and spicy sauces that add to your need to maintain a true healthy diet that you look forward to eating in large portions without a concern for high calories.

If you want to be different, pride yourself on diversity, and just want to impress your family, friends, and guests, this is the book for you! I hope she becomes a regular Chef on TV as well, it would be great to see her preparing and cooking such fine cuisine. I highly recommend this book without reservation.

Great Book for People Somewhat Familiar With Korean Cooking
The first word that comes to mind is FINALLY! Finally, there is a Korean cookbook that contains almost every Korean recipe you could ever want. Finally, there is a Korean cookbook that keeps recipes authentic. Finally, there is a a Korean cookbook that I can turn to when my finicky in laws come for dinner! Growing up Korean-American it was hard to get recipes from my mother since as any other Korean-American knows Koreans never measure ingredients! I own at least 5 Korean cookbooks written in English and not one of them can compare to this one in it's comprehensive addition of recipes. There are 164 recipes in this book! In the author's attempt to remain authentic the gamut of recipes runs from the well known to the more obscure for those unfamiliar to Korean cooking. The recipes are fantastic.

This is a book for those who are both serious about Korean cooking and somewhat familiar with the techniqes involved. It is also a great book for those who are looking to fine tune their Korean cooking skills or add onto their repertoire of Korean dishes since after almost every recipe there are suggestions for ways to modify the dish. Just as every individual has a way of personalizing a recipe, the author does the same however, the author's personalization does not detract from the flavor that the dish should have.

I would think that this is not a book for those who are just looking to begin because the book lacks specific technical description of preparation and presentation. It would be difficult for someone who is unfamiliar with Korean food to know what the outcome should look like since pictures of the final product are rare. If you are just starting out or if you prefer detailed step by step pictures and instructions "Practical Korean Cooking" by Noh Chin Hwa is a great book, although not quite as thorough as this one but still authentic.

A magnificent book
I have been to Korea many times, I love Korean food and have found most Korean cookbooks unsatisfying. They usually simplify the recipes so much that the dishes taste like fast food. The wonderful thing I found about this cookbook is that it has the whole range of recipes -- from easy things to the more complicated dishes for more adventurous cooks. The other thing is this: I always look at cookbooks just before I go to sleep to think about what to make the next day and the book contains memoirs that provide really good nighttime reading. I got Sting's wife's cookbook last year -- which also has information about their family and it was neither interesting or moving as this one is. Plus, the recipes were so complicated that it was completely useless (unless you have a private cook like Sting does and he/she can spend all day cooking!). Anyway, this Korean cookbook will hold an important place in my kitchen.

Sleeping Dogs

Sleeping Dogs
What a fantastic book! It really pushes the boundaries of teenage fiction, its so crafted and mature. I loved the sense of futility that overshadowed the whole novel, and the atmosphere of impending doom. You could really feel the frustration of the characters as they buckled helplessly against the pointlessness of their existence. I felt completely shattered after finishing it. I'm so glad that some American readers have discovered this wonderful Australian author - she deserves so much more recognition than she gets.

A dark, twisted novel with a shocking conclusion
Sleeping Dogs is a masterpiece, delving deep into human mind and morals. Hartnett takes young adult literature to its boundaries. She crafts the Willow family so well, with the proud, haughty Michelle, the dreamy Jordan, and the powerful, dominant father, Griffin Willow. The Willows came to the small town suddenly, almost fifteen years ago. But for the fifteen years they have been there, no one outside the family knows anything about them. They have lived on their small farm, completely alone, isolated from the rest of the town. At first glance, the family is merely old fashioned. The father is the master of the house. The wife is obedient. And their five children, Edward, Michelle, Jordan, Oliver, and Jennifer, or 'Speck' all have their unique traits; Edward is the worker in the family, Michelle daddy's girl, Jordan the artist, Oliver the brain, and Speck has the most spunk of them all. But even this close, traditional family has its secrets. Grace, Griffin's wife, has been cowed into obedience and eventually silence. Michelle is vain and haughty, and controlling of Jordan. She is the only one who truly accepts Jordan, as the rest of the family seems to reject him. His pale skin and fair hair are a striking contrast to the dark complexions of the rest of the family, a genetic trait which seems to have missed Jordan. Michelle's fierce protectiveness of Jordan and the isolation of the farm form a bond between them that is dangerously close. However, their secret seems to be safe until a man comes to their farm seeking refuge from a storm. He seems bent on destroying the family. When naive Oliver lets Michelle and Jordan's dark secret slip, a secret that not even their parents seem to know about, the children realize that there is only one solution. To keep Michelle and Jordan from exposure, they decide that there is only one way to deal with the newcomer: eliminate the threat. The tale unfolds, and as it builds up to the climax, all the blocks come crashing down in a finale that will haunt the reader long after the book is put down.

I have never read a book so fast!
When I was starkly reminded on Friday at school that I still hadn't read and reviewed my journal novel which we had, had the past 2 months to do. I had some work to do over the weekend! So, I sat down on Saturday morning with Sleeping Dogs and two hours later realised that I had finished this enthralling story. I was so encaptured by the book, I didn't even think of putting it down and now because of my English assignment and one amazing book I can say I read a book in two hours! Wow!

My mom loves it!
I personally do not believe in the pet psychic, but my mom does. I bought this for her for her birthday, and she absolutely loves it. She says that the stories are inspiring and heart warming, so I recommend this book to all pet owners out there that believe in this stuff. It's apparently a very good, enjoyable book!

Sonya is Real!
While some people enjoy trying to discredit Sonya Fitzpatrick's TV show and books, I can easily say I know she is for real and really enjoyed this book! I am purchasing it for the second time as a gift to a fellow pet lover and have no doubts about whether the recipient will enjoy and appreciate the book. Sonya's weekly show on The Animal Planet is testimony to the reality of her gift and reading this book is like talking to her directly about some of her most interesting cases. I just wish she could meet and speak with my cats! Don't listen to the naysayers, you will definitely enjoy this book!

An amazing book by an amazing lady
After reading prior negative feedback on this book, I was compelled to write this review. Are Sonja's powers real? Judge for yourself. I went to her seminar in Long Beach, California, concerned because my 9yr old red-tail boa had not eaten in almost 10 months. She was losing weight and two vets had no idea or solution to the problem, but both were approaching concern about malnutrition. I was lucky enough to be one of the people invited on the stage at Sonja's seminar to ask my question. Sonja's tuned in and after a moment simply said "Have you been doing major renovations in your house where you have moved her from her usual room to another room - because she said she doesn't like that at all? And have you changed the color of the floor - she said it used to be blue and really wants to have that back if possible?". Indeed, 10 months prior, we completely renovated our kitchen and moved our boa and her enclosure into the living room. The original tile in the kitchen was blue/grey and is now cream. Even though the kitchen was finished, we never thought to move her enclosure back into the kitchen. I asked Sonja "if we move her back immediately, will she start eating again". The answer was a simple "yes".

That night we arrived home, moved the enclosure back into the kitchen and fed our boa her usual jumbo rat. After refusing to eat every two weeks for 10 months, she ate it immediately.

For you skeptics out there, that's a tough one to explain away... Regardless, our problem was solved - a problem two vets were unable to solve.

So Beautifully Written!
A long song, really... All the things that broke your heart in childhood, brought back sharply in your mind, all the disappointment of adulthood on display... Dark, yet so poignant, yearning, beautiful, sad and dark and lonely, and... Brilliant.
I have to sit quietly after reading anything by Ms. Hartnett. she makes my soul shiver.
Read it. You be the judge.

Haunting
This is a beautifully written novel that will clutch at your heart. Adrien is an emotionally abused child with no sense of self-worth: he has been shuttled around, unwanted and friendless, and is now living with his grandmother and uncle. They worry about uprooting the boy, not realizing that he has no roots, no emotional connections.

I tend to see it as being for older teens and adults-- though it is sometimes difficult to get them to read a book about a nine year old. Reading a few paragraphs will convince anyone that this is not a child's perspective, but an omnicient somewhat dispassionate narrator with an adult's perspective. Some may be perturbed that the missing children mentioned so prominently are never found in the course of the book: we tend to want things tied up in neat packages. In fact, the children's disappearance does drive the book in that it sets Adrien's course, but they are not the focus. The language and imagery are exquisite.

I would recommend this to someone wanting a "think about" book-- it's not a quick casual read.

I would also like to chastise the professional reviewer who gave away the ending. Not very professional, in my opinion.

A lovely, haunting read...
This author can WRITE. There are writers who just put words down on paper, and then there are artists, creating entire worlds, interior and exterior. Sonya Hartnett is an artist.

The story is haunting, a mystery of sorts, nearly lyrical in places. Many places. I'd not want to give anything away. The perceptive reader will pick up on clues as it is.

As it is, we have the tale of a nine year old boy who does not ...well, how do you say it...just doesn't come prepared to handle the tasks and toils of living. He is etherial, more spirit than flesh, and doesn't fit into the world as do the flesh-bound. This is his life, this short novel is (which, by the way, is far more geared for adults than for teens, who haven't yet lived enough to grasp it).

The bird imagery is right on target, a constant metaphor that connects the entire story like a flock of separate, yet united, birds in flight. It is not a matter of whether or not the story is a happy one, for everything in life needn't be Disney. It is, moreover, a story that will land in the inside of the reader, a bird flown from the pages and into the heart.

It will stay there for a very long time.

I cannot fully express how worthy a read this is, and yet how unnerving.

I am in awe. It is a flawless novel.

A charming tale of a small boy learning about nature.
This true life story of a small boy who rescues a nest of wild chickadees, touches your heart as he learns first hand about nature. I highly recommend this short story for children in preschool through first grade. It is a refreshing story that they can relate to, and learn from.

A delightful true story, perfect for young and old alike!
My two children love this story of a small boy who rescues a nest of chickadees. The full color photos bring the story to life, detailing nature. I enjoyed the fact that it was a true life story, one that my children can relate to. I highly recommed it to anyone with little people in their lives!

Chickadee Rescue
Chickadee Rescue by Sonya Kittredge is a very sweet story of a small boy and his love of nature. The author's accompanying photographs serve to enhance the feeling of delight one gets when a little child and his mother set out to protect a baby bird. The format is one of simplicity, yet the author captures the essence and importance of teaching a child to respect all living things. The photography is beautiful and integral to the telling of the adventure. I believe all small children would enjoy reading this book with their parents and it could lead to a very lively discussion of the joys of the world around us.
