The Cat's Meow!
This book is a delight! Wonderful quirky illustrations! Very imaginative and funny! All the more enjoyable if you actually have a cat (but fun for Dog Lover's too!)

Dazed and confused
Satoshi Kitamura is the Kazuo Ishiguro of the under-5 set. "ME and my Cat" is of my daughter's favorite books, and she's a serious fan of Kitamura's oeuvre. A great book when they've outgrown "Duck Is Dirty" and other board books.

Creative and fun, a must for dinosaur lovers
This very clever story fills each page with the unexpected and makes full use of the idea of actually being able to pick out and own a dinosaur, without ever suggesting that owning a dinosaur would be unheard of where Alex lives. The authors and illustrators really let their imagination flow while molding a good and well rounded story. My three year-old usually wants to read it at least three times in a row every time we read it, and as a parent, I think she's making a good choice!

Satoshi Kitamura is one of the Masters
The story is pretty good, I remember it was very engaging when I read it when I was little (I'm 13 now). But what really makes the book good is the illustrations. They're beautiful. There's a lot of magic in them. Kitamura pays very close attention to the details (like seeing the neighbors cat outside on the fense through a window). The illustrations are great because they are not "perfect" (in the sense that everything is proportional, lines are straight, curves tend to be more pointed than curved, objects don't look perfect), which lends a great feeling to the pages. The facial expressions are great (part of what made Angy Arthur good), as are the people. I would highly recomend this book to anyone. Satoshi Kitamura is one of the masters of art in Japan, along with Hayako Miyazaki (Director and Animator), and Yoji Yamamoto (Clothing designers), and many more!

a great early book from one of the finest kids illustrators
Satoshi Kitamura is simply one of the finest illustrators currently producing books for children. I would highly recommend any of his books but this early example is a real joy.

Surreal story line, witty illustrations and some surprising paper engineering combine to make this a real classic.

Enjoy.

This was the favorite book of my childhood!
Captain Toby was (in my opinion at the time) the greatest book ever! I still remember 10 years later. It was one of those books that you just read again, and again, and again, and again, and still keep reading it with the same delight as before. There was a real magic to it, something that Satoshi Kitamura brings to all of his books (whether he illustrates them or does the whole book). Toby was a great character, going out on a great adventure. Like all of Kitamura's books the best part of it though is the illustrations. His books could be museum pieces! The distinct characters that run though all of Kitamura's books (a smallish Asian boy or lead character, the somewhat droopy but very cute cat, the trademark sheep-I think they were in this one, etc.) are here. There is so much attention to detail! You could spend an hour per page just looking over everything. His illustration style of slanted (but excellent) lines rather than curves somehow work very well. There is so much depth in every being in his drawings (characters or not), just by looking at them. Kitamura's outside landscapes are also distinct, they look more the deformed balls of string with their texture them shapes with grass drawn on them. In general his drawins tend to be out of perspective, this add a great feel to the drawings-it makes them more magical. Lines are not always straight, things are out of proportion, it almost looks deconstructionist, but still understandable. I have a lot of respect for one of the greatest art masters, along with Hayako Miyazaki (animator and director) and Yoji Yamamoto (clothing designer).

One of our favorites
My daughter considers this one of Kitamura's best, though a notch below the hilarious, suprise-ending "Me and My Cat" and "Lily Takes a Walk." Still, the book's off-kilter humor, his wonderful drawings, and his timeless story of Sheep Looking For Their Wool in the Big, Bad City is great entertainment.

Lot's of Fun
I brought this book home from the library and my 3 year old son loves it. We have read this book at least 30 times. The illustrations are great and so detailed we are discovering new things all the time. Our favorite pages are the beach scene, Elliot's office and the yarn fight. Now it is time to buy it.

"Boots, Bath-time!"
Bath-time Boots by Satoshi Kitamura is about a cat that doesn't want to have his bath. He hears the dreaded words "Boots, bath-time!" and quikly tries to hide. Unfortunatly for Boots, hiding places arefew and far between. "I can get in the cupboard. Oh no, I can't fit". The children at my nursery love this story. It is a favourite with all age groups. They join in with Boots' "Oh no" when he discovers his hiding places are not as good as they first seem. In fact, "Oh no" has become a much loved catchphrase with both children and adults in the nursery. I would definitely recommend this book, as would the children I've read it to.

This book adds a delicious element of fun and discovery to the normally tedious task of learning the alphabet! The clues to the letters are imaginative and fresh... Children will hold their breath as each page is turned, not knowing what it might bring. Lush, whimsical illustrations complement the guessing game. Keep an eye out for the amusing little details on each page! What's Inside: the Alphabet book is a wonderful addition to any child's library. Education has never been this fun!

Still funny after the hundredth reading
"Duck is Dirty" is the first book with a real plot that our twelve-month-old daughter fell in love with. Two months later, she still wants to hear this book ten times a day. The duck's expressions are hilarious, and this story is really fun to read aloud. I agree with another reviewer that this should be one of the classic books for babies and toddlers. Unfortunately, I couldn't even find it in our local bookstore and would never have discovered it had I not come across a reference to "Duck is Dirty" on one of the Amazon.com lists.

Just Plain Cute!
This book is really cute! I have an almost-two year old son who has never sat still for a book since the day he learned to crawl at 6 months old. I was really getting worried that he'd NEVER like books, but I ordered this book because he likes ducks and it was cheap. Guess what--from the moment he saw the cover, he loved this book! He actually sits still to have it read to him two or three times in a row! The pictures are adorable and the simple text allows for a lot of spontaneous discussion. There aren't many pages, so it's easy for him to turn to whichever page he wants to see. I just can't believe how instantly he took to it after a year and a half of no interest in books whatsoever.

Duck Is Worthy!
Duck Is Dirty by Satoshi Kitamura is a delightful book for babies. I bought it for my granddaughter who was three months old at the time. As a result of frequent reading, her first words were "Uh oh!" The language is simple, and the bright, colorful pictures reinforce the text. This is a wonderful first book! You can teach babies how to visually track how a book is read; you can teach beginning language; you can teach simple concepts. It will soon become one of your child's--or grandchild's--favorites!

Great book for young ages!
Squirrel is on a mission to store his walnut, but finding the perfect place is hard work! My 1 year old daughter thinks this book is funny! She giggles at all the silly places the squirrel tries to put his prize. She also stares wide-eyed when the squirrel runs into trouble. A great book to entertain your child!

simple

Our daughter loves this book
Our daughter loves her "Squirrel is Hungry" book. The pictures are very cute. We read this book to her everyday (she is one year old). This is a good book for babies.

Dog Is Thirsty

Great book!
This is a great little book about a frustrated little dog. I think my 1 year old is understanding what is being portrayed in the pictures. It also has other animals that she is always sure to point out. The simple phrases are easy for her to listen to and the book is short enough to hold her attention.

What A Life!
A wonderful book to read with your children. Large colourful pictures in which young kids can pick out key characters. A simple entertaining story as the dog wanders around the park trying to find something to drink. My favourite part is when he looks to the sky in desparation and sighs 'What A Life!' - how true of all our lives, an epic theme!

The real wonder of this book though are the illustrations. Witty and original they offer something different in much the same way Richard Scarry or Dr Seuss had a unique view on the world.

Good fun for dads like me too!

Enjoy.

Captivates my 18-month old
My daughter (now 19-months old) absolutely loves this book. I'm not sure why, as I think this book is extremely dull and simple. But the fact is that this is probably one of her top 3 favorite books these days. The pictures are very colorful, and the theme is very simple.

Might be better for older kids...
My one year old is very distracted by the busy pages. This book is not nearly so straightforward as "Duck is Dirty." Also, it is harder to tell what the animal is by the picture. It appears to be geared for an older tot.

Wonderful illustrations
The illustrations are the best part of this book. Anyone who has lived with a cat will recognize these faces. I love this book!

simple but wonderful!
I first bought Duck is Dirty, after that my 18 month old son was hooked!!! I purchased Cat is Sleepy and he absolutely loves, loves this book. I don't know what it is about Kitamura's books, but babies love them! Looking forward to getting the entire collection!
