Look elsewhere for a well laid out book...
This text has the information you need, often in multiple chapters. However, the book is poorly laid out, with long chapters that are hard to get through. For example, in the growth and development chapter, you go from growth charts to theoretical psych in a matter of pages. This makes it difficult to cover material as it is presented in class/clerkship. Hopefully, Rudolph's Fundamentals is better. If not, it's Blueprints all the way!

Good for the student, not the resident
When I used this book during my pediatric clerkship as a medical student, it proved to be a reliable source of excellent information, seemingly perfectly directed at what most attending ask for during the rounds and conferences. It gives a brief synopsis of pathophysiology, etiology, diagnostic criterion, management and prognosis of all but the rarest pediatric ailments. The well-organized approach makes this one of the ideal books for skimming before an exam, and yet the details provided also afforded much information for those who are preparing for a lecture.
Yet for pediatric residents (of which I am currently one), this book proves too superficial. I used it for a few of our monthly exams (when my internship labors gave me too little time to study our bible - NELSON), and I felt that it didn't quite deliver the necessary level. Not enough was mentioned about the syndromes that attendings love to ask about.
Overall, though, I love this book. It makes for a good "bathroom read" for both medical student and resident, but where the student can take it back to his desk, the resident should leave it in the bathroom magazine rack for future visits.

Essentials Of Pediatrics
I have been working as a Pediatrician in Pakistan since 1992. In Pakistan the Standard Text book Of Pediatrics is Nelson Text book of Pediatrics. But the most liked book is Nelson Essentials of Pediatrics. I have read all its previous edditons first as a trainee of Pediatrics and now as a working pediatrician. I think one should always keep with him this book and Harriet Lane Hand Book of pediatrics if one wants to remain current.

Lost Potentials
This is a compact little book with nice black and white illustrations appropriate to the saints, martyrs, or heroes depicted in the synopses above. The information in this book, which represents a great deal of research by the author, is presented in a manner that is interesting to read. That INFORMATION, however, is ESSENTIALLY INACCESSIBLE, BECAUSE IT IS NOT INDEXED. Only the illustrations are, but not in a way that would give the reader a clue as to the page on which the story about a particular saint, martyr, or hero can be found. Nor is there a clue in the titles that top the pages. In the next printing could someone please add an index? If not that, how about printing the name of each saint, martyr, or hero on the page where his/her story first appears in bold?

"On This Day" holds the interest every day.
Be forewarned that some of the people reviewed by Mr. Morgan are villains --- "saints" in name only. But still, this book consistently holds the reader's attention because of the wealth of historical information to be found in it. In spite of the fact that some of the people reviewed are villains and heretics more than saints and heroes, the fact remains that they were ALL involved in the history of the Christian church, and therein lies the compelling interest and value of the book. Mr. Morgan does not judge; he leaves that to the reader, which would probably be necessary for the author of any such book, no matter how stringently he tried to keep to biographies only of people whose faith every reader would judge to be genuine.

"On This Day" is money well spent, in my opinion, and my wife and I are using it as a gift selection for some of our friends.

Rev. Carlston Berry Oklahoma City, OK

Excellent Daily devotional for those who love history.
The book is full of inspirational stories of saints, marters and church history. I gained a new understanding of many of the changes in the church over the years. Each day has a one page story of some special happening that occured that day in the history of the church.

Could have been better
This book had a hard time keeping my attention. It is of course, short stories from the men who were there and originally written to be read by other soldiers only, in a soldiering magazine, circa 1944. I felt "The Thousand Mile War," was much better written and left me with a better understanding of the battle for Attu. Now, please understand some of the soldiers stories were very interesting, but more of them weren't, in my opinion.

An outstanding contribution to World War II studies.
In 1942 Attu (one thousand miles from the Alaskan mainland and the western-most island in the Aleutian chain) was home to two Americans and forty-five Aleut hunters and their families. In June 1942 Attu and the nearby island of Kiska were invaded by the Japanese in the hopes of forestalling use of the islands by the Americans and hindering any U.S. - Soviet cooperation, as well as establishing Japanese military bases for attacks on the American mainland. On May 11, 1943, the U.S. effort to retake Attu began. The struggle was essentially an infantry battle. The ever-present fog, rain and high wind limited the use of air power, and the craggy terrain made mechanized equipment next to useless. The American infantry retook the island foot by foot. Lieutenant Robert J. Mitchell was wounded in the battle. During his convalescence he took down the accounts of the survivors while their memories were fresh. In The Capture Of Attu, he presents them in his fellow combatants own immediate, direct, and informal language. This compilation of eye-witness, front-line infantry descriptions is a very welcome and highly recommended addition to the growing library of World War II memoirs now available for scholars and military buffs.

thorough in some ways
pretty good all in all, and nelson has done a great job going though the textual, historical record for hemp in the usa. however, he has missed out on many contemporary canadian sources so that will hurt this book's applicability to the farmers who are growing the crop today or want to find out more about it. also, you would wish for more diagrams and pictures. still, useful if you want to go beyond jack herar.

Music for analysis : examples from the common practice period and the twentieth century

Good for teaching or study!
This book is organized by terms of harmonic content. The book is divided into three sections: Diatonic Materials, Chromatic Materials, and Twentieth Century Materials. It contains an analytic checklist and sample analysis that can be used as a guide to the student. An index of composers makes it easy to study the musical style of a particular composer. The excerpts can be played by any competant keyboard player. This book contains mostly excerpts, but a few sections that contain a complete piece or movement of a piece. The selections are not analyzed, which makes for fun practice at analyzing them yourself!

Great new book for individualized study of ear training
This book is a required text for classes I teach at Laney College and at the Jazz school in Berkeley, Ca. It is a great book for beginners and intermediate students who wish to obtain computer assisted literature. The CD is very user friendly and works very well on both MAC and PC.(I have tried both.) The only draw back I have seen so far is the lack of study of modal scales in the first chapter. Other wise this is a very fine text and CDROM

Elliot Wave Theory explains most Stock Market Behavior
The charts shown in this book are from Elliot's time, namely the depression [ie. the 1930's]. You might think that they have no bearing to today's markets. However, one of the biggest problems with market timing is forecasting a bear market trend; especially a short one. That was my biggest problem with applications involving market behavior analyzed as Elliot waves. This book helps solve that problem by helping the technician analyze long bear market trends where wave counting is extremely critical.

The book helped my timing immensely, so that I don't get caught in false bottoms anymore and can recognize the top of markets, especially with respect to stock trading volume. The writer is at his best when relating to the market and analyzing trends. There is a long biography included in this volume, which I found tedious and boring. His analysis does have some contradictions, however, the charts he presents should help anyone with a high school education and good visual skills become a better trader.

An excellent work from a leading genocide scholar
In this intelligent work, Melson studies the role of revolution in the promulagtion of genocide. His theories cover political, historical, cultural, and psychological rationales, and lead to a concrete answer to a fluid question. The Armenian Genocide and the Jewish Holocaust are systematically disected, studied, and put back together, and a rational theory about revolution's role in genocide emerges. A definite requirement for anyone studying modern genocide.

A fine practicing system engineer's guidebook to satcom.
The authors cover nearly all the practical ground of the title from antennas to orbitology to video. The book mainly targets BS/MSEE engineers and is an excellent match at a general professional level. Highly experienced pros or academics may refer to it for breadth. The chapter problem sets make it a reasonable fourth year textbook. The index and lists of acronyms and symbols are better than average. Typography and graphics are outstanding.

To do this in only 550 pages (12 chapters) the authors perform a delicate trade-off between logging technical issues and delving into them. The reviewer judges it overall a wise set of trades. No real attempt is made to go into many subtopics past a thorough discussion of basic motives, mathematical relationships and key results, limitations and conventional use. "Middle ground" development and derivation may be missing or merely suggested in some cases. There is essentially no discussion of military vice commercial satcom except noting the hard-limiting transponder. Yet the reader gets a solid feel for the "lay of the land" in both theory and practice. In overall content, the book leans toward RF and physics, and away from data transmission and networking. This sets it apart from books on VSAT. Reference lists go back to classics (e.g. Nyquist in 1928) and forward to about 1991. It is an excellent complement to specialized satellite communication texts on the engineer's reference bookshelf.

Some criticisms can be argued. Topic balance is not always satisfying. For one example, two packed chapters (117 pages) present orbits to an admirable "user level" of detail. Yet only one chapter (40 pages) presents the critical topic of multiple access, and there is only one paragraph on DAMA. In another example, the digital modulations PSK, QPSK and 8-PSK are overviewed but not MSK; yet good references made to Lindsey, Proakis, et. al. Their coverage and references on forward error correction (FEC) coding is even thinner relative to other equally important topics, and in the reviewer's opinion this is one of the book's few shortfall areas holding it down to four stars. This second edition is dated 1993, and a third edition correcting some (few) errors, gaps and shortages (e.g. FEC) should be very welcome by the engineering community. It could be a five star text without rewriting most of it.

[Reviewer's Notes: I own and use this book. I am a professional telecommunication system engineer. I have no relation to the editor, author or publisher. Stars are opinionated and awarded parsimoniously. Five stars is top flight quality and relevance; such a book may not always exist in a given subject. Four is a standout among existing works. Three is solid quality and can be very useful. Two disappoint somewhat but there may be reasons to keep it. One star covers everything from finding many significant flaws to a disaster; I'll spend my time with more stars.]
