Sedges: Carex (The Illustrated Flora of Illinois)
Published in Hardcover by Southern Illinois Univ Pr (Txt) (1999)
Authors: Robert H. Mohlenbrock and Paul Nelson
Amazon base price: $60.00
Average review score:

Great Illustrations
Very useful book. Excellent illustrations. If you want to know what sedges are, I give it five stars.

Mohlenbrock Carex
Mohlenbrock's addition to the illustrated floras available in the midwest is most welcome. This volume describes the taxonomy and illustrates each species of Carex found in Illinois. The application to adjacent states is relatively easy since the genus is widespread. The book provides an update of the Carex section of the Gleason New Britton and Brown Illustrated Flora which is now out of print. Mohlenbrock's Illinois Flora was not illustrated and given the complexity of the genus, the clear diagrams and location maps make an arduous taxonomic task somewhat, I emphasize somewhat, easier. If you are working in wetlands this volume will be of special interest to you and should be a part of your office collection.

Beautiful applique
The applique designs are lovely, realistic, and disarmingly simple. Watch out for small applique pieces. The individual flower designs seem to me to work better than the larger composition pieces shown, but all in all a refreshing new look.

Wonderful, realistic, wild flowers.
The author and designer of this book has a great sense of humor. Her designs are realistic and her technique is simple and easy to understand. Gone is the pressure to be perfect because nature is not perfect. The color plates give excellent ideas on use of the various line drawings. Designs are presented so they may be mixed to create a realistic flower garden appearance.

Wowsa
This is a highly readable discussion of the 33 and 34 act requirements of the SEC as they apply to accountants. I think it is essential reading for any Controller/ CFO or independent accountant about to perform work for and SEC registrant or private company about to file an s1.

I find it highly readable. The CD alone is worth the price.

A reissued collection of classic essays
The Everlasting Sky is a reissued collection of classic essays that portray stark details of Anishinabe reservation life in Northern Minnesota, along with human histories and tragic imbalances between Anishinabe and dominant culture individuals. A recurring theme that is the search to honor the vision of the artist, particularly the Anishinabe artist, and the quest to refine or even reforge a definition of "indian," Anishinabe, and cultural art and learning. These chapters are compelling, vivid, and go beyond linear verbal traditions with their impact. They do not make for easy or comfortable reading, for the dominant culture reader. But they are treasures laced with bitterness, but treasures nevertheless. There is something medicinal and bracing about the writings of Vizenor. In his new introduction he writes about manifest manners, "the apish continuance of manifest destiny," and the educational value of daydreaming: "Ted Mahto, the literary artist and philosopher, celebrates the natural Anishinabe custom of daydreaming as 'a very constructive kind of behavior' in public schools...'We are going to have to find ways to recognize what it is that is happening to a child when he daydreams, because this kind of visual thinking, you know, might be of more value with respect to learning how to live with one another than learning how to work a mathematical problem...There is something spontaneous and religious about visual thinking which is being ignored in the public schools. (p. xiii).'"

This dialectic underlies much of The Everlasting Sky. And even that trivial insight is not key to understanding or experiencing the dazzling Anishinabe voices under Vizenor's pen. Perhaps it is necessary to allow oneself to experience the pain in it, even vicariously, to progress to something like a starting point, or common ground. Then the elusive beauty that pervades the underlying cultural vision can perhaps be glimpsed or imagined.

Though it is difficult to understand those whom we have so badly hurt, it is not a punishment to read The Everlasting Sky. Rather, it is an experience of richness, like the final series of paintings of George Morrison, that work to "create a sense of that imagic moment when the water on the horizon of the lake merges with the sky (p. x)."

A collection of funny and touching baseball poetry
These poems provide something for everyone who treasures our national pastime. They vary from hilarious (when his team loses the big game, a husband tells his wife that a foul tip from INSIDE their TV shattered the screen), to nostalgic (a child's thrill at opening the season's first pack of baseball cards), to heartfelt (a divorced couple whose son goes to Mets games with mom, Yankee games with dad), to poignant (the heroic death of Roberto Clemente: "The waves have lapped too many times, since your plane of hope went down, robbing us of the last farewell").

There are sections devoted to: Folktales, History, Teams, Milestones, Players, Fans, The Hobby. Harrison's poems resonate with those memories and legends that mean so much to fans - where we were (or wish we were): watching Jackie Robinson's first at bat, Ted Williams' last. Even those magic numbers that mean so much to fans get their due: 4192, 511, 61*, ad infinitum.

Understanding life in apartheid's prisons
This collection of letters, by one of South Africa's leading activists, offers a direct view of the experience of a political prisoner during apartheid. Written during the author's 26 years in prison, alongside Nelson Mandela and Walter Sisulu, the books grants the reader the rare chance to grasp the daily hardships these men endured. And yet, given Kathrada's courage, humility and humor, as well as their ultimate political victory, the book is a source of inspiration and hope.

Complete Story of the Last Great CW and Frontier General
When I read this book, I really wanted to focus just on Miles and his contributions to the Indian Frontier since he virtually closed it out. I learned far more about Miles, a highly skilled and brave field commander who rose all the way to command of the Army by the Spanish American War, than I expected. I was aware of his tremendous ego but I learned more about his political intrigues, compulsion for rank, rivalries with other officers and attraction to crowds and newspapermen. Wooster takes you rather quickly through Miles' youth and astounding CW achievements and spends a good portion on Miles and the Indian Frontier. He outlines quite in impressive detail Miles constant maneuvering for command and reforms, his controversies with Generals and Presidents including Teddy Roosevelt. Miles was involved in the Sioux campaigns, Sitting Bull, Grey Beard, Cheyenne, Nez Perce and Geronimo and the Spanish American War. After reading the book you will have a mixed feel for Miles. Did he want to be in the midst of the action just to participate in an intense challenge or was it always to as a platform to achieve rank? His politics later in life were anti-Catholic and anti-immigrant but he later worked to get the Indians a better deal and he preferred the emancipation of the Philippines after the Spanish American War. He is an important read, he was even in over all command but not the field officer at Wounded Knee. Miles saw many of the most famous Chiefs at their peak and literally escorted them to their final homes, the reservations. Wooster writes an incredibly objective book on a person who contributed tremendously to our history from 1860 to 1910.
