Magical Book
Put together Payton Dunsmore, Harriet Wheaton, and Jovette Island and you have "Magic". According to the legend, Jovette Island has a magic with couples. "One Jovette every generation meets, falls in love, and marries someone on the island". However, the magic only works for a Jovette. Harriet is a descendent of a Jovette, and the last in line. She wants to keep her island and decides to kidnap Payton and hope the island works it's magic. After Payton get's over his anger at being duped, he decides to see if the island legend is true. One of my favorite chapters in this book is when they celebrate Thansgiving and dress up in old clothes they find in the attic. And the ending, is spectacular!

Great book!
The other day I had to sing a variation of the Muppet Show theme as I hosted a Talent Show, and I thought I would never find music for my accompanist. Then a simple search found this great book that has almost all of my favorite TV themes. (I watch a lot of TV, so I recognize a lot of the songs.) The music is neither too simple, nor to difficult. If you like playing the piano and/or singing, and you like watching TV then you'll love this book.

A Thought Provoking Journey
Mary Kay starts the novel with "On October sixteenth, Holly Ann Loftin died". Thus begins a thought provoking journey into the unknown. Holly Loftin is a poor women who spends all her time and money helping out people less fortunate. The man she meets, Oliver Carey, is from an "old money" family. Something draws them together from the first moment their eyes meet on a crowded airplane. Holly knows things about Oliver that she shouldn't, and can't seem to explain, and this in return drives Oliver nuts. This story is fantastic and is a lot of fun to read. Mary Kay uses lots of love and laughter in telling the story.

Wake Me When It's over: A Journey to the Edge and Back

Burning a candle at both ends.
A witty, honest account of a women's journey to the edge and back.

Too many commitments, too many responsibilities and not enough self assessment on her physical and emotional needs, leads Mary Kay into a 9 day coma.

Her family and friend's love and support during these days and Mary Kay's determination to live makes this story heartwarming and real.

A must read for all women facing the "Super Mom " syndrome.

Translations Worthy of Performance!
The students in my theatre history class consistently rate this book as the best of all that we read. The translations are honest, accessible and, best of all, performable. Mary-Kay Gamel's translation of Iphigenia At Aulis is a revelation. In addition, the book's introduction and individual prefaces to the plays provide an excellent background on Athenian culture and theater in general, and on the significance of women as characters and audience in particular. I recommend Women On The Edge for classes like mine and as a scholarly work, but I also feel that anyone interested in Euripides and ancient Athens will appreciate this book.

Mostly just a low fat diet
I was disappointed with this book. While it stresses the importance of eating enough protein to balance with carbohydrates, the authors seem to treat all carbohydrates the same, without emphasizing the difference between starchy and non-starchy carbs. The authors are apparentlly unwilling to break from the low-fat paradigm that has dominated diet books for the past 30 years. They recommend questionable foods that I will personally never eat again, such as frozen microwavable dinners, white bread, non-fat "cheese" and margarine. I think a much better book on Insulin Resistance is Syndrome X by Jack Challem, et al. I have also just purchased The No-Grain Diet by Dr. Joseph Mercola, which looks at first glance to be an excellent book, and deals with many of the same issues. I'm convinced, by my own experience, that a diet with too many grains, and especially flour can lead to insuin resistance, so I was dismayed to learn that these authors do not really recommend cutting these way back.

If you have PCOS....
you really should check this book out. There isn't a lot of direct reference to PCOS in this book, but if you do your research you'll find that Insulin Resistance is named as a probably culprit of PCOS. There are many Low Carb programs out there and I've tried them all only to revert back to my old eating habits and regain weight that was so hard to lose. The Link and Balance approach outlined in this book is one that really could be done forever--it's easy to do and satisfies the needs to eat some carbs. Makes a lot of sense to limit the amount of carbs eaten within a 2-hour window and always balance them with adequate protein. I've even been able to find fast food meal solutions and eat socially without feeling left out or deprived.

More interesting info contained in this book is Dr. Hart's info on Neurotransmitter precursers and the role they play in food cravings and appetite control.

I recommend this book to anyone who struggles with ongoing weight issues Insulin Resistance or not. And, if you've got PCOS this program along with glucose lowering meds could be the solution you've been looking for.

A feasible, flexible, sane approach to diet and nutrition
This is by far the best book I've read on the benefits of eating a higher (as opposed to high) protein diet. The authors give an easy-to-follow but detailed explanation of what insulin resistance is, why you want to control it, and how to do that through diet. Best of all, their recommendations are do-able -- they're simple principles (eating carbs with protein, limiting the amount of carbs eaten in a two hour period) that can be applied to a variety of diet preferences and lifestyles. It involves some tweaking of what you eat, when, but not the drastic (and, to me, completely impractical) overhaul that many high-protein diet plans do. My one criticism is that the author's presentation of their eating plan is a bit confusing in spots (and that may account for why another review here discounts the book as just another low-fat eating plan -- it's not that, at all). I had to go over it a couple of times to understand what exactly I was supposed to do to put their principles into practice. But overall it's a wonderfully sensible book, non-threatening, with eating guidelines I think anyone should be able to live with and benefit from.

What a juicy read!
This book had me hooked from page one to the last page ~~ it's witty, quick and brash and at the same time, it is bittersweet. It's a wonderful Southern lit book ~~ and it's one of my favorites. This is the first time I have ever heard of Mary Kay Andrews and I am hooked.

Weezie Foley lands in the midst of a murder-scandal accidentally while looking for a bathroom at an estate sale ~~ and how she gets out of it is a hilarious tale in itself. Then revelations about family members, ex-husband, new boyfriend and friends spice up the entire book with their tales ~~ this book keeps you on its toes and never lets up till the last page is turned!

If you like mystery with a good dash of romance ~~ this book is for you. Not only is it fun ~~ it is hilarious in some places ~~ these Southerners have a great sarcasm and it shows. Nothing seems to stop them except extreme humidity ~~ and an icy gin and tonic can cure that. So grab that bottle of suntan lotion and head for the lake or the nearest shade and enjoy! Don't forget your iced tea ~~ this book will leave you with a hankering for a drink!

A Trip to the Bathroom - Or A Trip to Jail?
Put in a stock of good wine, seafood and especially chocolate before beginning this highly original culinary/antique/vintage/kitschy cozy. A deliciously wordy dip into a part of the Savannah landscape that Behrendt missed, complete with an antebellum plantation house, an outrageous ex-husband, wonderfully dysFUNctional family issues, and a bit of beefcake. Weezie is a thoroughly wronged ex-wife, with a business in picking treasure from junk piles. Living in the carriage house/garage behind the Savannah townhouse she helped buy and restore (only to be booted out of by her ex- and the home wrecking Caroline). Weezie is managing her life though, until an emergency trip to the bathroom lands her in jail. Accused of breaking and entering as well as a being a suspect for the murder of Caroline. This book rejoices the issues of family, good friends, knowing yourself, helping but not judging and keeping your sense humor - as well a glimpse into a historic city. I found it positively delightful and give it five stars in the beach read category.

The mystery does not totally conclude when you close the cover of this book, I'd suggest a dance over to the author's website, where another mystery unfolds.

GREAT SOUTHERN MYSTERY....
As soon as I had read the first few pages I knew this was going to be a wonderful book. This story is filled with funny quirky characters, great antiques, wonderful food and antebellum houses.////After 10 yrs. of marriage, Eloise's (Weezie) husband Tal left her for another woman named Caroline. Weezie moved into the carriage house in back of the town house that Tal and Carolina now lived in.///Weezie is an antique picker, so wanting to get a head start on an estate sale to be held at "Beaulieu", she and her best friend BeBe decided to camp out at the site of the sale. During the night, Weezie broke into the house to use the bathroom and fell onto a murdered body and became the prime suspect.///Daniel, a boyfriend from long ago has reappeared in her life and they run into many problems that tend to keep them apart.///Weezie's uncle, James, a former catholic priest becomes her lawyer.///A few interesting developments occur to make for a wonderful book from beginning to end.///You won't be disappointed if you read this book.

NOT VERY HELPFUL - ESPECIALLY FOR THE MONEY...
I bought a couple books on this subject and was really disappointed by this one. It wasn't hilarious and it wasn't very original. I thought it was going to offer some new, different, insightful information but it didn't. The illustrations are cute, but frankly, this was a waste of my money when there are funnier, CHEAPER, more helpful, and just plain better books out on the subject.

Hilarious!
HILARIOUS inside look at a role every female must play at least once in their life; very tongue-in-cheek; nice gift for the bridesmaids

all brides and maids must read
This is a delightful, informative and fun book to read. The illlustrations are unique and you want to keep turning the pages to see more. Also, there is much good information to avoid the pitfalls of choices to be made, such as avoiding selecting dresses for bridesmaids that will cause them to hate the bride forever. Much practical advice a bride and bridesmaids can use no matter how big or small the wedding will be. Buy it and laugh along with it.
