Dewitt Jones is a master photographer. His pictures capture the glow in the rocks that is so frequently referred to in conversations about the Colorado Plateau. He seems to have just the right touch in bringing back memories of this wonderful region. I can almost feel the chill morning air at Bryce Canyon, the heat in Zion, and the dust in Canyonlands.
Stephen Trimble is one of the finest of the younger Western author/naturalists. As with Jones and his photographs, Trimble has a manner of expression that evokes nostalgia with every page.
The book is organized on the Navajo six directions: East, South, West, North, Zenith, and Nadir. A seventh direction; the heart or center, is also discussed. These reference are most appropriate, and it is fitting that the Navajo method of direction is used in discussing and photographing their home.
This beautiful book is one of the finest coffee table books I have ever seen. You will enjoy it for countless hours, again and again.
Note: Don't cheat yourself by buying the paperback. The hardbound version is infinitely better.

3 years ago, when I was in England, I bought this book. My friend held it up for me and said "How about this? It looks creepy." I thought, from the cover, it looked silly. I thought every story would be about vampires rising from the grave, and mysterious tahitian dolls that cause mayhem... Was I ever wrong. I adore this book; every story is a gem of subtlety. Most, if not all, are wonderful examples of psychological horror. Think of the old t.v. series, "The Twilight Zone" and you'll understand what type of horror these stories are aiming for.

Ligotti's "Our Temporary Supervisor" is undoubtedly, along with "First, Catch Your Demon" story in this anthology. It has perhaps the most pessimistic backdrop of any story that I've ever read. It is Kafkaesque, surreal and exceedingly creepy. "First, Catch Your Demon" is about a half woman/half scorpion who seduces a man in a drugged out/mystical fashion? The story is written in a style that I've never seen the like of, perhaps only Nabokov or Bernhard.

This anthology is an absolutely essential addition to any
respectable werewolf or general horror collection. I would
rate it equal to or better than The Ultimite Werewolf. I was
transfixed, carried it everywhere, and it IS a little hefty (but then again,
most anthologies are). But, it was certainly worth the effort
and not really too big to stuff in a bag or really large pocket.
I truly believe this book has a story for everyone, even those who
aren't huge horror buffs. The authors range from the extremely
well known, to the less recognizable. My personal favorite story
was the Zorro story (second to last in the book - you gotta wait
to get there).
