Commentary helpful to non-specialists
This line-by-line commentary by a classical scholar is written for non-specialists. It is keyed to the popular translation by R. Lattimore, used in many college courses. Jones points to special features of the poem (such as "ring composition"), explains place names and other obscure phrases, and suggests interpretations of various scenes. There is a wealth of information here. Rather than summarizing the poem (like Monarch notes and other shortcuts around the reading process), this commentary is designed to make your reading deeper and more historical.

Peter Jones' "Learn..." books: excellent beginner value!
If you're self-learning a language, and finding standard textbooks to be drier than toast, give Peter Jones' "Learn ___: A Lively Introduction to Reading the Language" books a try! I have his book for Latin, and it enabled me to get over the initial learning curve and see that I would be able to learn this language after all. So, when I saw that he had another book for Ancient Greek, I snagged it as quickly as possible! These books began as a popular series of newspaper columns in the UK, and were subsequently published as books due to popular demand.

A classic lesson for people of all ages.
This book was a pure joy to read. Even though it's meant for children, I received it as a gift and intend to read it to my daughter when she's old enough to understand. The person who gave the book to me knew that I, like you, would appreciate the dreamlike environment in which the book is set. It makes for a golden-threaded background for another lesson based on the golden rule--with a twist. Instead of "Do Unto Others As You Would Be Treated", it's more of a "Do As They Want to Be Treated."

The words used and the way the story is told keeps the tale alive and interesting for both adults and children. (Adults in particular would enjoy the "knowing way" in which certain descriptions are slipped in.)

An Excellent Resource
I was so frustrated with ordering guides and lesson ideas that turned out to be a fifty page guide of the most useless essays ever written on Shakespeare. This is the real thing. a 2 inch thick, 3 ring binder full of ideas that you can use in your class. You don't just get a bunch of worksheets, you get progressive exercises that look at problems in the plays, issues your students want to know about, and background that helps them contextualize the information. I wish I would have had this book when I started teaching. I find myself going back to it again and again.

The Joy of the World of Rome!
Most Roman reference books seem to present the information in a very muddling way. The World of Rome is a must-have for all those who want to learn about Rome in a progressive, easy to use way. The book is divided into sections on life, religion and is particularly helpful in understanding the poltical systems and leaders. The book covers the period from 1000Bc to 476Ad making it an essential item for the ancient historian who is looking for reference without wanting to spend hours looking through waffle.
