Great Train Book
A great book that mixes the story of a legendary folk hero and a supernatural battle between heaven and hell. Nancy Farmer is a great writer and the oil paintings bring the story to life.
What a treasure
I came upon this book just browsing in a childrens book store. I love how the story hints at a supernatural struggle in the midst of a folk story about the early days of railroad. Beautifully written and the pictures are gorgeous.

Pure facination for those who really enjoy the Civil War
As a civil war buff who enjoys touring, I unexpectedly lucked onto this rare, out of print,1991 edition in a major bookstore recently. It was the only copy on the shelf. I devoured it in conjunction a Blue & Gray magazine trilogy about John Singleton Mosby's exploits during the war in Virginia. This Evans/Moyer book is loaded with neat little tid-bits of information about the man, himself, his many facinating associates and opponents, their controversial engagements and the multitude of specific locations where his "Rangers" operated from 1863 to 1865.Fortunately, many of these sites are still available in beautiful, historic, north-central Virginia. I give it 5 stars even though it's map/diagrams are confusing and can only be understood with the assistance of updated, fully detailed maps. Despite these defects the book deserves such a rating.
Excellent information on Colonel Mosby and his mission.
Thoroughly researched and entertaining, this rare and compelling book is a must have for Civil War enthusiasts. Bravo!!

One word about the Animation: Fantabulous
This awesome little treasure is simply a tease for the real treasure... the full-length feature film is simply the most creative animation that has come out since the Iron Giant & Joseph: King of Dreams. The "back to basics with lots of funk & soul" animation helps protray a suberbly written script full of wittiness and crazy laughter. "S.Shaolinski has done it again"
This is a great book!
This book is a great book. After I read it I wanted to see the movie. But it's not out yet. It is greatly written. You should get this book.
The pilgrimage of James : an odyssey of inner space

Beautiful story of soul's journey in spiritual realms
This is a beautiful story by George Arnsby Jones, a disciple of Sant Kirpal Singh (1894-1974), the great Saint of India, of a soul's journey on the celestial strains of the spirit manifesting in 'Flaming Sound.' The lyrical descriptions of the inner realms are presented in a matter of fact manner that makes it somehow more powerful and enchanting. One easily identifies with James as he transcends the negative forces and rises to ever increasing spiritual consciousness and bliss. It wonderfully inspires yearning for practical and real knowledge of God and illustrates the need for a competent living spiritual guide. For more information about the Path of the inner Light and Sound, call 1-877-MEDITATE. It's a great read and a incredible journey!!
A TIMELESS JOURNEY OF THE WITHIN
A hypnotic story of a disciples inner journey with Maharaj Kirpal Singh Ji. Experience the suspense as James narrates his travels on the astral and casual planes, culminating with his baptism in the Nameless Region. A beautiful account of the Love between Master and disciple.

Must Have
In addition to be being hilarious, this book actually contains useful information. Up to now, I've known James Gaskins for his excellent technical books. Now I see that he has a great sense of humor as well. I have hundreds of technical books, but books that mix humor and fact as good as this are hard to find.
Too Funny For Words!
A clever look at the wacky world of the internet and the world wide web. The perfect gift for those computer geeks and geekettes in your life!

People; Not Just Cars
This is not just a book about cars. It's about people, corporate culture, and a company town. Helen Earley was an Oldsmobile employee for many years. Yes, she discusses the cars and the ups and downs of Oldsmobile. However, the reader also gets background on what it was like to work and live in Lansing, MI, the home of Oldsmobile. Thus, readers see the interweaving of corporate cuture and community that make up a company town. Because of that, this is not just a book for Oldsmobile fans. It is also a very interesting piece of business and social history.
Excellent Oldsmobile information source
Excellent information about Oldsmobile's cars and people.

Whistle is one of the most philosiphical book by Jones.
This novel was not finished by its author, but it is great bookas it is.I'd read it several years ago and decided that it will be the subject of my professional reserch in the philology. I think that this book by Jones with its mystical ending somehow remines us Melwill's 'Mobby Dick '.The episode with the discription of the death of Strange ( he drawned in the cold water of Atlantic ocean ) is really very pathetic and mystified. The main theme of the book is the 'second lost generation ',becouse the soldiers returned from the war can't find the proper place in post-war world. The novel is reach of different themes ( the relationship between men and women, the soldiers' speculations about their future etc.)I advice averybody to read it and I can say that it will not be just wasting time.wwww
Whistle
James Jones seems to have a reputation for being an author stuck on WWII. Whistle is indeed about an aspect of WWII. But like all of James Jones's work, he brings a sense of "truth" to this an all of his other books. Jones knew the difference between a bronze star and the CIB. He also knew the difference between getting "laid" and making love. He also knew the difference between a thesaurus and well woven words.
I consider James Jones to be one of the greatest American writers of our time....although Pat Conroy and Beach Music is right up there.
No one that I have ever read has been able to render the anger and frustration of the combat veteran into words the way Jones did.
He also knew that he was dying as he tried to finish Whistle. Many would say to hell with it, and enjoy the last days of their lives. Jones felt an obligation to get his vision...his memory...down on paper before the grim reaper took its final toll.
Anyone who hasn't read Whistle is certainly missing something in their life when they wake up every mornng. It is somewhat like going through life without having read Catch-22. How can one?
Suffice it to say that James Jones is one of the finest writers in the 20th century. And while I've read that he felt Some Came Running would be the book that he would be remembered for, Whistle is the culmination of his work...of his life.
Anyone who hasn't read it is missing something very important.

A vividly reconstructed account tracing Wilson's run
In the spring of 1865, Major General James H. Wilson and 14,000 Union cavalry troops destroyed key Confederate industrial facilities in what had been, until then, relatively unscathed areas of Alabama and Georgia. Yankee Blitzkrieg: Wilson's Raid Through Alabama And Georgia is a vividly reconstructed account tracing Wilson's lightning run south and places the campaign within the larger context of the last days of the Civil War. Historian James Jones describes in detail the strategic background of the raid, covers the raid from both sides, and notes the economic significance of the industrial facilities destroyed. Jones' description of Wilson's capture of Jefferson Davis is the standard interpretation of what happened when Davis was taken by Union forces. Yankee Blitzkrieg is superb reading for Civil War buffs and students of Civil War history.
An Excellent study of one of the most ignored campaigns!
Yankee Bltizkrieg is one of the most enlightening studies of Wison's raiders in their finest hour. The book follows Wilson and his men from rain drenched northern Alabama to a triumphant capture of Confederate President Jefferson Davis in Irwinville, Georgia. It explores how Wilson effectively moved over 12,000 men for over 500 miles in the span of about a month. A feat which would have made Guderian proud! It is a must for Civil War enthusiasts and military strategist
