Brian Jones gets his comeuppance!
After years of people making excuses for the behavior of the beautiful Brian Jones, someone has finally written a book that gives a nod to his magnificent talent and style. Writing from a socialogical point of view, Reed comments on Brian's place in history comparing him to Quentin Crisp and Oscar Wilde. If there had to be a complaint it would be Marianne Faithful as a source. The woman was way too stoned to remember anything clearly. This is an interesting companion piece to Nicholas Fitzgerald and Anna Wohlin's memories of Brian Jones. Reed didn't KNOW Jones personally, but he did understand him. A very worthwhile read.

Brian Jones: A Powerful PISCES & Musical Vissionary!
... This book about the life, death, and character of Brian Jones is absolutely as beautiful as it is chilling! ... Jeremy Reed has the gifted ability to transcend time and space and bring us right into the heart and soul - and life circumstances at the time of his death - of Brian Jones, founder and one-time leader of The Rolling Stones. ... I do not know if the conclusion of this book is true: that Brian Jones was killed and murdered in the swimming pool at his own country home by a group of bloody blockheads who were friends with employees of the Rolling Stones organization; but after reading this book, Bill Wyman's STONE ALONE, and the most recent OLD GODS ALMOST DEAD (about The Rolling Stones, by Stephen Davis), there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that Brian Jones' death was no accident! ... I was pissed after reading this book! Pissed, and sad. ... Where in the hell were the other Rolling Stones within hours of this happening to Brian, and why did they NOT insist on a thorough, precise, and intense investigation into his death?! THIS question haunts me MORE than if Brian was murdered or died of "misadventure;" MORE than if Brian was heterosexual, homosexual, or bisexual; and even MORE than if he, indeed, was getting his act together and on the verge of forming another great band. (On the last postulation, I have no doubt!). ... So, the real question to ask is: If Brian Jones was murdered, WHY was Brian murdered - and more importantly - to WHOSE BENEFIT would it be to see Brian dead? ... RIGHT?! ... 1969 was a bad year: The Beatles broke-up, Brian Jones "died," and The Rolling Stones had to suffer their own DEGREE OF MURDER (indeed!) during Altamont. ... The Beatles and The Stones had a lot in common, but especially astrologically. Both bands had a combination of 2 trines and 2 squares. In the Beatles, Lennon (Libra) and McCartney (Gemini) were both trined AIR signs, whereas Harrison (Pisces) and Starr (Cancer) were both trined WATER signs. Also, Lennon was "squared" to Starr, and McCartney was "squared" to Harrison. ... In the Stones, Jones (Pisces) and Wyman (Scorpio) were both trined WATER signs, whereas Jagger (Leo) and Richards (Sagittarius) are both trined FIRE signs. Jones was "squared" to Richards, and Wyman was "squared" to Jagger. The 5th member of The Stones, Charlie Watts (a Gemini), is "opposite" Richards, "sextiled" to Jagger, "inconjunct" to Wyman, and ALSO "squared" to Jones. THIS made Brian the odd man out, with a DOUBLE-SQUARE against him!! Oppositions are no picnic, but they harbour a certain degree of respect. Squares, on the other hand, can be VERY disrespectful. ... This book sheds much light on the sensitive soul of Brian Jones. Pages 29 and 94 also have some very inuitively perceptive and right-on remarks about serious sociological realities in modern capitalist societies; realities that - as a true artist - Brian found himself at odds with. Yet, unlike Jagger & Richards - who tried to bribe their way out of jail - when Brian got busted the first time, he honestly and openly admitted that the pot and / or hash - and ONLY that - were his. He did not lie! He may have been a petty thief at times, an irresponsible parent, and an abusive misogynist - to say nothing of his alcohol abuse - but he was honorable, dignified, and true to his artistic and individualistic spirit till the end. ... He loved music. Brian Jones was a Dionysiac Adonis and a Lord of The Muse, who he served with all his heart and soul. ... This book sheds light on the truth. If you love Brian Jones, if you love The Rolling Stones, and if you love the music that inspired them all to devote their lives to it, then you MUST read this short, but very insightful, book by Jeremy Reed. It is truly a labor of love. - The Aeolian Kid.

Well-illustrated; unacceptable text
This book is well-illustrated by Peter Stevenson. That's what brought our attention to it. We have bought others in this series that were wonderful and loved. But this author, Allia Zobel-Nolan, suggests that we "wave good-bye to God" as we leave church on Sunday. If that is the impression you'd like your children to have of God, that He has no part in the beauty of creation and our daily life, then you will like this book.

A wonderful "FIRST" bible
perfect for a small child's hands, this handy bible's brightcolors combined with the child-like wording is wonderful. A great wayto introduce your child to Christianity.

Death of a Rolling Stone : the Brian Jones story
Published in Unknown Binding by Sidgwick & Jackson ()
Author: Mandy Aftel

Average review score:

A Good Look At Brian's Life
Published in 1982, Aftel's book does a good job of providing narrative and photos of Brian's life and death. Aftel is/was a psychotherapist in Berkeley and she does a very credible job of presenting the details (with lots of very good photos). She does not get into the stories about the possible murder, although she does report on the thefts that occurred at Cotchford Farm immediately after he died. If you would like to hear the murder story, get the CD from Geoffrey Guiliano "Brian Jones: The Lost Stone" which is sometimes part of the 3 CD set "The Rolling Stones Interviews" on LaserLight.

If you've seen the movie....
The format is a mass-market paperback, but this isn't a novelization but rather the screenplay as the movie was made. You'll notice that last has a subtle distinction. Oftentimes screenplays differ notably from the movies as you see them--scenes are cut because they didn't work, cost too much to do, or just because of the limits of time. The screenplays of Brazil and Monty Python and the Holy Grail are full of wonderful little tidbits that didn't make it to the screen. Unfortunately, for Life of Brian, there's only the parts that did get made, which are funny indeed, but you've already seen them.

Paint It Gray.
I really wanted to like this book. I saw A.E Hotchner on TV talking about Doris Day, and he just struck me as a likeable, earnest sort of guy. Unfortunately he didn't live up to his Tv-self in print. Most of the book is comprised of large chunks of interview material, both from Hotchner's own research and Rolling Stone magazine interviews you've probably already read. The rest is made up of highly subjective meanderings and vain attempts to link two ideas together.
It's hard to make this story dull, and some of the Marianne Faithfull stuff is good, but there are better books with less academic-sounding titles about the same subject. Or you could just watch "Gimme Shelter" for the condensed version.

Rolling Stone Lit at its best
This is an outstanding book that provides excellently written information on the world's greatest rock and roll band. Although i question some of the accuracy of the information, it is one of my favorite books.

The title makes no sense.
"The Murder of Brian Jones" by Anna Wohlin. The woman who was Brian Jones girlfriend and at the house the night of his untimely death on July 2,1969. Thirty years after Brian Jones death Anna Wohlin has now decided to tell the world that Rolling Stones founder Brian Jones was murdered. She claims to be intimidated from telling the truth about Brians 'murder' thirty years ago. The only truth is she still does not give us any new information about what happened that night. Her story is still no different than what she testified to under oath thirty years ago. She was not an eye witness to his so-called 'murder' but yet she knows he was murdered. Pretty neat trick. Anna Wohlin had her 'suspicians' that builder Frank Thorogood had killed Brian Jones and nothing more. Who knows, maybe her suspicions were right, but it is still not proof that Brian Jones was murdered. Someone has to explain to Anna Wohlin that being 'suspicious' and 'murder' are not the same thing. A very strange title for a book that proves nothing. There have been several biographies written about Brian Jones's so called 'mysterious' death thirty years ago but yet his death certificate still says "MISADVENTURE" and not "MURDER". Maybe we were told the truth thirty years ago.

A Must!
Ms Wohlin has apparently had battles with lawyers over the publication of this book and I think one has to read between the lines to find the truth. She has told as much as she was allowed to with regard to Brian Jones death and it is all there if you can but see it. I found it a fascinating insight into the last few months of Brian Jones life. Not the wasted, washed up, lost soul that the Rolling Stones would have liked you to think but a newly regenerated force to be reckoned with, had he lived long enough to start a new band. Great book, well done Anna for having the guts to write it.

Long time coming but well worth the wait...
This is an excellent book which gives an insight into the last few months of the troubled but charismatic founder member of the Rolling Stones. It shows that Brian Jones had cleaned up his act and was happier than he had been in years until his untimely death at the hands of employees associated with the Stones organisation. A must for all Brian Jones fans.

Weak, Verbose, Outdated
This book is roughly 800 pages ostensibly about the installation and configuration of Windows NT 4.0. Well, it isn't. The publisher -- QUE -- true to form, has pumped it up with useless verbage about unrelated topics so that of the 800 pages only 160 are even dedicated to installing Windows NT. I was hoping to find information useful to multi-OS installations. This sub-topic was given about 2 pages which just indicated that the boot manager should solve all of your problems.

So what you have here is a fat book which is mostly filler. The brief collection of pages that were on-topic were hopelessly weak and over-simplified. Also, this book was published in 1996 and is now hopelessly outdated as regards developments in networking and distributed computing environments.

Do not buy this book unless you need kindling. I threw mine out. Forty bucks down the drain.

Not Recommended
Very light weight. No new information, simply defines terms and offers little advise

A very good coverage installing and configuring WinNT4.
When Microsoft launched Windows 95 they set in train a massive hardware upgrade as users discovered that run in the MS lexicon does not mean the same thing as the definition in Webster or Oxford. Those with a penchant for conspiracy theories will, no doubt, have made up their respective minds that it was all a plot to make Windows users NT-ready. Ready availability of affordable Pentium processors and the falling cost of memory have made NT attractive to PC users who have networked older equipment with modern Pentium-equipped systems to share peripherals within the home or office.

NT is a powerful system with many features and options. One cannot simply load it in the same, casual way as DOS. Planning is needed to determine the best configuration for a particular setup. Fine tuning is not just an optional activity for enthusiasts; it is mandatory if the system is to work effectively (or at all).

This book is about installation and configuration and is, as the title says, a handbook. It is written for experienced users who want to appreciate the issues involved in the installation and configuration of NT as a server or on a workstation. It is divided into logical parts; installation, administration, adding hardware, managing and tuning sub-systems, networking and communications, configuring Internet services, and customising a system.

Even though twelve authors have each written separate chapters, the style and language is consistent throughout. They have managed to write in a way that avoids technical jargon, but does not give the impression of talking down to their readers. Anyone wanting to put NT to serious use for a local network or comms server (BBS or Internet) may want more specific resources, but this is a good launching place.

For some the Handbook may be all they need, but those who require more technical information will (unless already expert) benefit from the good foundation Jim Boyce and his team have provided.

None of the authors is employed by MS, so there is no hesitation in mentioning OS/2 or using other dirty words. Configuring NT to live with other operating systems is explained along with installation over a previous version of NT or other existing operating system.

Adding and modifying hardware is an ongoing task with most server setups; the authors deal specifically with multimedia devices (sound cards etc.), modems, and printers and fonts.

Readers who have no experience of network or system administration will find the discussion of administration issues clear and helpful. An introductory chapter describes the fundamentals of system administration. Following chapters talk about how servers are administered and resources shared, controlling users, and the all-important registry maintenance.

A section on networking and communications has chapters on optimising NT in various environments, including Novell and UNIX, and the use of remote access services. For those who intend using NT to run Internet services there are chapters on using Internet programs, setting up an Internet server, installing Windows messaging, TCP/IP, and implementing a firewall.

Sub-systems such as memory, file systems, data security, and hardware configuration have to be managed and require fine tuning. A section covers what the authors call "critical sub-systems." I found the discussion well presented and easy to follow.

Some companion CDs are best employed as coasters for the ubiquitous coffee mug. In this case the publishers have provided a very useful collection that can save hours of on-line time. The CD contains a formidable array of drivers, system tuning tools, Internet client/server tools, 32-bit graphics, e-mail enhancers, and other utilities.

A well-designed and well-written handbook, this title is well worth looking at by anyone with a serious interest in NT, either by way of assessing its suitability for a particular task, or as a manual for new installers. It does what the title says, provides the information needed for installation and configuration. It does that well and comprehensively, and comes with a library of utilities and system tools.
