Concise Text for a Busy Clinic
There are many books written on this subject but I must say that thisbook is a class above the rest. It introduces Paediatric cardiology to a doctor in a systematic way. Pathophysiology is explained in great detail. The text is supported by excellent charts and graphs. The books divides the cardiac diseases into simple yet systematic classifications. Management of common cardiac diseases in children are included. There are even a topic on arrythmias and management of cardiac emergencies.
I would recommend this book all Paediatric Cardiology trainees.

In Search of Damascus
This trilogy should be recognized as a vital moment in the history of theatre, rather than a case of dramatic autobiography by an eccentric author. It is hard to know where to start this review, because so many subjects are covered and contradicted in these works. As readers we are led to regard it as a personal struggle, from the point of view of the Stranger (or the Unknown). We cannot even be sure if the seperate characters are all manifestations of one central character or not. The Stranger seems to be constantly buffeted and abused by fate.

One reservation I would have is with the translation, which seems laboured at times. I would love to be able to read it in the original and see if this is a fault of tanslation or Strindberg himself. Still, the raw energy and downright 'oddness' of this epic more than makes up for any reservations.

A Taos Treasure
I bought this book because this summer I had the distinct pleasure of staying at the Laughing Horse Inn, the home of Spud Johnson. I just had to have the book and find out as much as I could about Mr. Johnson, and how he lived in Taos. The book was a huge success. I got an enormous kick thinking about staying in his old room, and reading the book again. The book is a treaure.

Two thumbs way up
This is latest update for the most revered text in the field of cell and molecular biology. I used this book as an undergraduate even though this was not the required text for the course. I still turn to it often as a graduate student. As someone who has read the book cover to cover I can vouch for its extensive coverage of the most important concepts and the abandance of information on the most frequntly encountered concepts. It is a must have for any serious student of cell, molecular and developmental biology. I recommend that you buy this book in addition to any required texts for your course. The book is so comprehensive that even topics that gained prominance in 2002 such as RNA interference are wonderfully presented. Even if you are new to this subject area this book if properly used can increase you understanding immensely of even the most difficult of concepts. You would never regret buying this.

Still the Best textbook on Cellular Biology!
I'm an undergraduate student in Biology and I was looking for the best book on the subject... after a hard selection of the best ones available, I came up with two great items: Lodish's Cell Molecular Biology and Alberts's Molecular Biology of the Cell.
When I spoke with my older colleagues in college and asked my Cell Biology teachers (they're both career researchers) for their opinion about what should I buy, I always received the same kind of answer: «Well, they're both great references, Lodish's is a very insightful text on the matter, as well as Alberts's. But you know... Alberts's is the real thing, the one to go for: It gives you the most wonderful and comprehensive view of the cellular world!»
So, I decided to buy Alberts's and indeed, it is a terrific book: accurate, up-to-date, really enjoyable to read (for those avid for scientific knowledge), the English is quite accessible, illustrations are excellent, a truly great achievement! From now on, this book will be my «bible»!

Molecular Biology of the Cell
Molecular Biology of the Cell is one of the best surveys available on the status of current information about cellular biology. The authors skillfully accomplish the difficult task of combining detail with readability while conveying the excitement of this dynamic field. Clear, concise, and colorful illustrations assist in this task and the book is a fine collection of splendidly dramatic photos of "molecular biology of the cell" in action. They covered an enormous amount of material with a style that is simple enough for a college-level biology student to follow with enough detail and references to be of use to an experienced research scientist. Bravo for a job well-done!

Pretty good....
This is a pretty good story of a long time professional hunter in the Africa of old. Capstick lets Mr. Johnson tell his story in his own words, which are not as entertaining as Capsticks writings.

The Best of Capstick
Having read all of Capstick's books. I think this one ranks at the top. Wally Johnson had an extremely interesting life. Capstick writes the book as if they are having a conversation. Wally has many grest stories and Capstick injects his own observations on each subject. This book, especially the first half is probably the best Capstick ever. I have read this book many times and never tire of it. A definite must read for anyone interested in Africian adventure.

This book is a must.
For anyone who has read this book,I knew Wally Johnson, from when I was a child. My father {mentioned in the book}, Ken Fubbs, hunted with Wally for many years. I really enjoyed this book, as it brought back many personal experiences, and memories, shared with Wally. I am also fortunate enough to have one of the few autographed copies of this book. Should anyone like to read another book very similar to this one, about Werner Von Alvesleven, the man in charge of the whole set up in Mozambique, this book is also available.

Insightful and intelligent, although a bit repetitive...
Kierkaagard's Attack Upon "Christendom" was written, not as an attack upon Christianity as a whole, as many believe, but as an attack upon the Lutheran state religion present during his lifetime. He offers a great deal of evidence showing how the priests in his native Denmark are not, as they believe, "Witnesses to the Truth", but are in fact liars who mislead the masses and merchants who have their careers (which is, in K.'s view, the wrong way to look at it) only to make money and have a royally subsidized position.

All of this does, however, become somewhat prolix, as this book is actually just a series of articles and pamphlets that he wrote in a 2-year span, which were then combined into the present work. Still, though, this book is an enjoyable read, due to the satirical style of K.'s writing and the, however arguable, relevance of the subject. I recommend reading "Training in Christianity", though, as an introduction to this book.

"if only we call this Christianity, we can get away with it"
An excellent book written with the utmost reverence for God and truth, and yet also a devestating blow to Modern "Christendom" -- Kierkegaard passionately skewers hypocracy with his amazing talent. Read this book if you want to be reminded that Christianity demands the following of Christ and not the "building of sepulchers of the prophets and garnishing of the tombs of the righteous" that is entailed by "worshipping" Him in the hideous whitewashed spires of "Christendom".

"As high as true Christianity stands above all heresy and error and aberration, just so deep below all heresy and error and aberration lies [the] twaddle [of Christendom]."

"Think now what passion there was in primative Christianity, without which it never would have come into the world; propose to one of those figures the question, 'Dare a Christian tranquillize himself in this way?' 'Abominable,' he would reply, 'that a Christian... should tranquilly keep silent in the face of the fact that God every day is mocked by people pretending by millions to be Christians...'"

The ultimate Conspiracy Theory
If you want to reassure yourself that Christianity is wrong or stupid or whatever, read Nietzsche's Antichrist. If you want to read something that actually frightens Christians, this is the book for you. The difference is Kierkegaard is a Christian with extensive Church experience so unlike Nietzsche he knows where the bones are buried.

The whole thing amounts to an elaborate Conspiracy theory. In order to be rid of Christianity Society has not rejected it, but enthroned it. But in so doing created a hierarchy (the institutional Church) with the covert purpose of making certain that Christianity does not exist. Christianity is professed as the StateReligion. There are many civil servant employed to promote it. There is much Real Estate devoted to it. Church attendance is high. And, as a result, Christianity is effectively nullified, because it actually exists nowhere.

One must remember that SK and Han Christian Andersen were drinking buddies (they fell out when SK reviewed one of Andersen's novels) and SK here announces another naked emperor. In a Christian nation no one is a Christian!

If you are just starting SK I suggest this book because here he is at his most open and "direct." Everything else has deep ironic undercurrents, but a "surface" reading of this one is probably close to right.

A MUST HAVE FOR ANY EDUCATED PERSON
A gem of a book. It puts at the hands of lay people the wonders of molecular biology. The best way of spending $65 I can think of.

The text is a most refined product distilled by an all-star team of leading scientists. Oriented towards the lay person or the would be specialist, it is simple, unpretentious, sometimes even funny, but always powerfully explanatory. The diagrams are exceptionally clear (a must for explaining such complex subjects) and the photographs are astounding. Love for their subject and passion for teaching are present all along. And mysticism is always around the corner...

If you have ever wondered things like "What are exactly chromosomes?", "How do exactly enzymes work in the cell?", or "How the hell does all this machinery work at a purely chemical level ?" and you are not quite satisfied with popular science books, this one is for you. It will answer these questions and much, much more.

An enjoyable, deeply satisfying tour the force through the molecular level of all living organisms.

Don't miss it!

Superb introduction to cell biology for short courses
I have used Essential Cell Biology for my one semester introductory cell biology and found it to be superb!! It's perfect for a one semester undergraduate course, as well as a terrific overview for laymen with a strong interest in how and why cells work. For introductory cell biology courses, nothing on the market comes even close to this text. Like its larger predecessor, Molecular Biology of the Cell, the text is clearly written, informative, and downright interesting, a rare commodity in textbook writing. Once again, James Watson's superb writing style shows through in this book. The numerous illustrations are a superb complement to the text, explaining and reinforcing the concepts presented in the text. In addition to its use as a text for one semester courses, I would also recommend this to interested laypersons who have an interest in how cells work at the molecular level and are not satisfied with the few popular-level books on the topic. Here they will find a gold mine of insights into the marvels of cell structure and function, all of it clearly written and accessable to anyone with a good high school or mediocre college background in basic chemistry and biology. The only drawbacks of this book is the limited suggestions for further readings and the sparse information on the techniques used to study cells. Otherwise, it is a terrific, attractivly presented, superbly written and illustrated book. It is a real asset to all who have an interest in the cell, except for publishers of competing texts, who are likely to lose most of their markets to this excellent book.

An excellent introduction to cell biology
I used this book as a studying supplement during the cell biology module of my first-year biology course. It explains key cell biology concepts clearly, thoroughly and concisely. The text is very well written and has wonderful photographs and diagrams throughout. Updated and recent biological and biomedical findings are used to further tie in the concepts of cell biology. Those that prefer a more detailed source of information should look to Molecular Biology of the Cell, but for beginners, Essential Cell Biology is an excellent place to start.

A fine read about baseball;s greatest pitcher
This biography, by Johnson's grandson, fills a gap in the historical literature of baseball. Though Johnson comes through as a very admirable character, by all accounts that is an accurate portrayal of man respected by all his peers. For a Washington Senator fan, the book was especially welcome, as the exploits of one of baseball's most hapless teams is rarely the subject of any publication

You can't help not liking the Big Train
Henry Thomas seems to have inherited the Big Train's genes. One gentleman does a big service to another (his grandfather)as Walter johnson is depicted in this well researched and written biography. If you are an avid fan of great pitchers, dead-ball era ballplayers, or just enjoy a heartwarming story of a well respected gentleman baseball player, this book will not disappoint. Walter "Barney" Johnson was more than just the second winningest major league pitcher of all time with a blazing fastball. First and foremost he was the sports main ambassador of goodwill as well as the idol of Washington Senator fans and the entire baseball community. The only matter that the book did not clear up with me was how he derived the nickname "Big Train." In other aspects, the book was extremely well done.

The Big Book on The Big Train
Written from the heart, and it shows. Truly a magnificent piece of work from Henry Thomas. I loved this book from beginning to end. Follow Walter Johnson from beginning to end through the eyes of someone that actually cares about Walter Johnson, his grandson. I cannot say enough great things about this book. Such a teriffic treat about a wonderful character in the history of baseball.
