Students Perspective
Hey, I am not a math person... And this book was really confusing.. Filled to the brim with problems to work out, it leaves little room for explanation! If you have this book. You'd better hope that you have a good professor!

Vague arguments!
The author of this book is making an attempt to convince the reader that capital punishment is inhumane, gruesome and unjustified. Paradoxically, Johnson makes no mention of all innocent people who have been brutally murdered, raped, molested or tortured. Instead, he endeavors to make the reader feel sorry for psychopaths on death row. We are talking about individuals who have murdered, raped, molested and tortured innocent people. They have forfeited their legal right to live in our society. As is well-known, psychopaths are usually cunning, insidious, charming, manipulative, callous and can easily deceive their psychiatrists. It has been documented that malefactors frequently relapse into criminality upon release and commit additional crimes of gruesome nature. I wonder if abolitionists take into consideration the following aspects: What if they or their children were the next potential victim of a released convict? If people had known that they were the next potential victim of a "rehabilitated" murderer, I am not sure that they would oppose the death penalty. Abolitionists seem to think that as long as they do not get in a way of a murderer then they are against capital punishment. This way of reasoning is highly egotistical! However, this aspect has to be taken into consideration when forming an opinion on the subject matter. It is not possible to be objective about this issue. Dangerous criminals shoud either be incarcerated for life or sentenced to death. This is the only way to ensure maximum security for the public. We must not allow murderers, rapists and child molestors to commit additional crimes. In conclusion, this book presents vague arguments against the death penalty. It is ambiguous and has many shortcomings.

A well-researched, well-written account of the death penalty
This is an excellent book to use for research or to learn more about the death penalty. The author did an outstanding job of presenting the facts about death row and explaining why the death penalty should be abolished. He not only discusses how death row inmates are psychologically tortured, but how guards who must watch these men and women are also adversely affected by carrying out their jobs--the legal, premeditated murder of another human. Johnson explores the reasons for popular support for the death penalty, and believes that offenders should be punished, not killed for retribution. This is an amazing book which will affect anyone who takes the time to read it through, even those who staunchly support the death penalty.

A mine of misinformation
This book would have benefited from careful proof reading. The are many examples of incorrect captions and diagrams with crucial information absent. If the publishers are not willing to at least include an errata sheet this book could be a disaster for the novice!

Best basic how-to about photgraphy out there.
From pinhole cameras to modern autofocus, this is the best learning textbook available that I've seen. Easy to read and written in simple layman's terms, it can improve the pictures you take and simplify the science of light.

Fundamentals of Reasoning: A Logic Book

Relatively Technical
Not everyone is founded in logic. Actually, most everyone is not. The author attempts to immeadiately aquaint the reader with arguments and inductive strength, when most readers are not prepared for such technical language right off the bat. It would have been better for Robert Johnson to have supplied modern textbook highlighting and sectional delineations and conversational language the reader can relate to rather than plain text and examples that read like computer programming. He does give examples that are easy to understand, but when you are not eased into it, the examples don't help.

James P. Johnson
Published in Hardcover by Scarecrow Press (01 February, 1992)
Authors: Scott E. Brown and Robert Hilbert
Amazon base price: $55.00
Average review score:

OK but....
James P. Johnson (1894 - 1955) is one of the great neglected figures of 20th century American music. He composed the "Charleston", accompanied Bessie Smith and Ethel Waters, was the acknowledged champion of the Harlem stride school of jazz piano, taught piano to Fats Waller, influenced Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Thelonious Monk, and wrote some of the first symphonic music by an African-American that sought to fuse European and American music into a coherent whole.

This book is the only full scale biography of Johnson to be written so far. As such it is a valuable addition to our knowledge. It was originally written as a senior honors project at Yale, and although expanded, still bears signs of its origins. It is strong on the development of the Harlem stride piano style and has a good chapter on Johnson's pianistic approach.

However, it also has some flaws: it is based largely on secondary sources, has little to say about Johnson's "serious" music (most of which was not rediscovered until after 1986), is unbalanced in its emphasis on the 1920s while neglecting Johnson's jazz revival in the 1940s, and offers only limited analysis of his recordings.

Bob Hilbert's discography is a very useful addition, although it is now 15 years out of date and therefore omits both CD releases and some recent discoveries.

For Johnson fans or those interested in the history of stride piano or in the New York jazz scene of the 1920s, this is well worth getting. However, it is not the definitive scholarly biography that Johnson's stature ultimately deserves.

????
I would like to know more about this book. Miniatures is too general. Is it about Doll houses or Military /Fantasy lead Figures.?

A good introductory book on painting in miniature.
The book is an introduction to painting miniatures (portraits, landscapes, animals, still life scenes) in oils, watercolours and gouache. I found it very useful in discovering the techniques used and being able to follow examples given by a number of expert British miniaturists.

Let's get the facts straight
Some information incorrect and not to be found where book directs. Not enough in-depth - very basic.

There are Better Books on the Subject
I've lived in Mexico for over 30 years and think this guide leaves a lot to be desired. I wonder if the author has ever lived in Mexico for any length of time. John Howell's "Choose Mexico' is a time-proven classic.

How to Find a Job in the Tampa Bay Area

Resume Sales Forum - BEWARE
While the book "How to find a Job in the Tampa Bay Area" provides some interesting thoughts, the book really turns into a resume writing sales forum for Mr. Johnson and Career Florida. Unfortunately, Mr. Johnson's writing technique displayed in his books is quite the opposite of what is produced from his resume "mill". Mr. Johnson proclaims to have a background in writing from California State University and so therefore discounts a lowly "customer's" comments regarding basic English syntax. Mr. Johnson's attitude is to move people throught the process ASAP, so that he can dupe the next customer. If you're considering retaining Mr. Johnson for his resume writing services, beware of how quickly he'll take your money and then "hang-up" on you when you point out obvious errors. This was the first and last time I would ever use such a service. After such an experience, I have come to the conclusion that once these "professional" resume writers have cashed your check and handed you the first and only draft, beware of that sound behind you, its the door being slammed.
