I bought this book from the author at Kroger grocery store in Atlanta. I followed this sister to her car. After asking if she was available, she said yes, for booksignings and poetry readings. She handed me a book, asked if I would buy one, smiled and said she wasn't available. I couldn't resist, eventhough I didn't believe her GI man was waiting for her in Dunwoody. I'm an Alpha man, so the Egyptians on the cover caught my eye. I bought it and couldn't put it down. This book, like the author, is beautiful, real, raw and funny! You will love it. Although I didn't get a phone number, I got a really great book.(SMILE) To that brother in Miami/Dunwoody whoever, wherever you are, you are lucky. No disrespect, Don't slip, cause somebody will grip. Seriously, the book is nothing but the truth. The words and art send a strong message.

I met Nanci at a book signing. Let me say I was taken by her stunning beauty, inside and out. She was so open about her life and the experiences that motivated certain poems. She laughed and entertained us. I enjoyed every minute of it. We need to support good, black poetry and keep it alive. Look out world, because Nanci is going to BLOW UP!

Open Our Eyes offers an unapologetic look at life through the eyes of the African American people. The best word that I can think of to describe the book is Raw.

This is THE book to own if you're interested in fancy goldfish. The section by Erik Johnson really gives a modern update to goldfish husbandry i.e disease treatment et al. Richard Hess and Erik Johnson have put together a fantastic book containing so much info assembled from a wide variety of sources that it makes a great reference book- both to the novice and the pro. The section on ranchus also is top notch. This great book isnt just a picture book; it's packed full of valuable information that anyone can use!

I couldn't keep Goldfish without this book! It's incredible - the general, species and medical information contained within is absolutely comprehensive. The photos are gorgeous, and cover every type of Goldfish you could dream of. The history section is interesting as well. Breeding information, basic tank care... you can't ask for more!

The Walls of Jericho offers a riveting, close-up and personal review of the political struggles of the Civil Rights movement, seen through the eyes of three is its major protagonists. Author Robert Mann carries us to know and understand southerner, racist Richard Russell, southerner human rights supporter Lyndon Johnson, and northerner firebrand liberal Hubert Humphrey. We agree with them, or disagree with them, Mann allows us to understand where they are coming from. In the end, they are good men trying to do good things, as they see them to be good. I was emotionally struck in reading about the personal, political, and social interplay.

This is a clear discussion of the process whereby civil rights legislation passed the Senate in the late 1950's and the 1960's, despite the filibusters threatened and actual of the Southern Democratic senators. It could easily have been a book about political re-alignment as well, but it would probably need to be twice as long. Many of the trends that dictated the course of American politics in the 1960's are seen in microcosm in this book - Would the South bolt the Democratic Party? Would the Democrats capture the African-American vote from the party of Lincoln? Could a Southern Democrat win the Whitehouse? Would the Dixiecrats throw the presidency to the GOP? Having grown up in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where Hubert Humphrey is remembered and revered, and then living in Atlanta, Georgia for 14 years, the land of Martin Luther King and Richard Russell (and the region of LBJ), I was very intrigued by the subject of this book. I also found it refreshingly evenhanded, yet an intimate and personal view into one of the most important periods of American history, written about a subject that not only is in the forefront of out collective attention, but has been so since before our nation was founded. Not only that, it was a good read, with as much excitement and plot twists as the latest from Grisham.

If you are at all interested in Civil Rights, or you just like reading about politics, this is a very good place to start.

I'll make this short...For anyone interested in Chinese history, literature, or culture, this volume is an absolutely essential collection of primary sources, and includes prefaces and explanations by China scholars. There is no one better than de Bary, and this new edition includes everything from the 1960 edition up through the Jiang Zemin era.

I've read a little of this and that about Chinese history and religion, and I needed a book to fill in the basics and the details. This was perfect.

First, the selections included excerpts of almost everything I'd ever heard of: Shang Oracle Bones, the Analects of Confucius and the Confucian classics including the I Ching; Mozi; the Tao Te Ching; Zhuangzi (who famously dreamed that he was a butterfly); Mencius; Xunzi; the Zuozhuan; Sun Tzu's art of war; all kinds of stuff about Chinese schools of Buddhism including the Lotus Sutra and the Flower Garden Sutra and the history of Guanyin and Wutai Shan; Li Po (Li Bo) and Tu Fu (Du Fu); and neo-Confucianism (which was so influential in Korea). In short, this is really, practically the "Eatern Canon" and the selections are deserving of such a label. I was in turns morally and intellectually challenged, uplifted, informed and surprised; but rarely bored and never disappointed.

Second, the introductory essays were exactly what I wanted to know: who might have written it, and when, and who read, and what it meant to them. For all that information, they were still brief and the bibliography was sufficient to help me chase the points that left me curious. An important thing these essays did was to cover the political, historical and social backgrounds (and foregrounds) of the texts, so I learned about Chinese history as well as literature and religion. If that is what you want to do, this book will serve you well.

The binding is excellent, and while the price might look steep I have to say it's a bargain considering what you get.

I didn't read Volume Two, and so I don't know if it is as good. It is certainly a lot smaller!

This second edition of a classic provides an update on a reference recommended for college-level collections specializing in Chinese literature. Sources of Chinese Tradition has been recognized already as a scholarly staple: in its new form Sources of Chinese Tradition has been extended to include the Deng Xiaoping and Jiang Zemin eras of China and includes invaluable source readings on history and literature of the times, from the 18th-century Qing civilization onward.

Richard Peabody, whose own writing and editing receives too little attention, has here provided a varied and rich collection of often unknown named woman writers whose words echo back to a time we cannot forget. In many ways their views and sensibilities advance our understanding of their time and individual condition more than their more known male contemporaries. Peabody has provided another service to readers as he does with his series "Gargoyles" and his soon to be available novella "Sugar Mountain."

Although, most beat anthologies focus mainly on the works of male beat writers; "A Different Beat" provides an excellent source of women who were writing during the Beat Movement. This book is a testament that women were involved in the Beat Movement, and they were not merely watching "their men" from the sidelines. They were expressing themselves through their prose and poetry. I started to give this book four stars for providing a broad (yet sadly, still incomplete) selection of women who were active in the Beat Movement. However, since Elise Cowen's poetry was included in this anthology, I had to give it one more star. If you are interested in "beatnik" writers, this book is definitely something you should pick up.

The words of 1998 MacArthur Fellow Charles Johnson's ccoupled with the poignant photographs of Bob Adelman climax in this excellent literary work that chronicles the life and legacy of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The wonderful photographs and literary prose compliment each other beautifully throughout this masterpiece, detailing the life and democratic stuggles of King. Beginning from the early childhood of Mr. King to his untimely death,
Adelman's photographs depict a very young King with his family. It provides insight into his his upbringing and illustrates the foundation that culminates into the life of the great civil rights leader. It continues to depict his educational pursuits and ultimate marriage to the lovely Coretta Scott.

The books carries the reader through the voyage as a young King rises to prominence as a preacher, his continued quest for racial equality, and mainly
his persistent call for agapic love in conjunction with nonviolence. Also, shared in this tome is intimate photographs of King's time spent with his loving family and information about King's life that may not be well-known.

Although nearly 300-pages, this book capitvates the reader from cover to cover. All in all, Johnson and Adelman are to be commended for their efforts! This liteary piece is nothing short of superb!

I have many photography books in my personal collection, and I have several on the civil rights movement, but this book is by far the best I have seen. The book combines the work of several photographers - including Alfred Eisenstadt, Charles Moore, Henri Cartier Bresson, plus some lesser knowns - who have been individually recognized for their own work. The photographs are a true documentary of Martin Luther King's life and death with many photos I have never seen before.

If you want to now the exact positioning of hands and feet this is a great book. The 'dance step' layout of the foot positions for the pommse is very original and helpful. Into Moo Duk Kwan buy this one. Note this book covers to Pawlgae 3.

Excellent content. Clear sharp photos of one of Americas greatest pioneering TaeKwonDo grand masters in action. Very organized. Excellent value. A must have for every martial artist.

If you want to know where this franchise went wrong (and why, every once in a while they haven't), this is the book. Easily the best history of a baseball team I've ever read. It celebrates what there is to celebrate, such as Boston's early successes, 1967, and 1975, and takes an unflinching yet still entertaining look at the rest. New information throughout, from the myth of the curse, Tom Yawkey, to Fenway Park, to the ineptitude of the current acting owner. Although this book is a year old, the reasons why things went wrong this year (and why that's likely to continue barring change) is laid out for you - amazing. Whoever is contemplating buying the Red Sox should read this book and committ it to memory. For the rest of us, it just might get us through til next year.

What a sensational book. I have read Red Sox books in the past, and nothing seemed to capture the essence of the ball club's trials and tribulations than Red Sox Century. This book is as tragic as any classic story and examines 100 years of "what ifs." This book leaves no stone unturned and gives fans the ability to learn and love the former players of seasons past. It is the best Red Sox book I have ever read and will give one a deeper appreciation for the organization and it's tragic history. A futher note of excellence for this book are the points the authors make in putting to rest, the "cursed" theory and many other false misconceptions of the organization. It is a tremendous book and is a must read for any diehard Red Sox fan. Hell, it's a must read for anyone who wants to read a good tearjerker...

This is THE definitive Red Sox history. It tells the whole story just as it happened. Of course, for Red Sox fans that is both good and bad. If you want a happier ending, read Bill Lee's The Little Red Sox Book, which changes Red Sox history and provides dozens of happy endings, including Ted Williams killing Hitler with a line drive, Babe staying in Boston and Jackie Robinson joining the Red Sox. I suggest you read them both...one to put you out on the ledge and the other to coax you back in.
