works best with a Overhead Projector
This book didn't work well with a lamp, but worked really well with a old 3 M Overhead Projector. The only problem is the stiffness of the binding which makes it hard to lay the page flat on the Projector plate, a spiral binding would make laying the pages flat a lot easer.

Excellent
I received this book as a holiday present a few years ago. Almost every recipe I have made from it has been superb! The muesli recipe is one of my husband's favorites, and the chickpea casserole with mango (chole) is one of my standard "potluck" party offerings. I highly recommend this! The photography is just wonderful as well.

Beautiful story
In New York City, Sandy deeply grieves the death of her beloved husband who succumbed to AIDS. As Sandy struggles to regain her equilibrium, she finds solace in a safe relationship with her brother-in-law before testing the deeper rapids with a contractor.

While Sandy toils with finding a reason to live, her best friends also struggle with life. In the courtroom Martha the assistant DA is a grandmaster, but her personal life consists of alcohol and the drudgery of trying not to lose her lover. Insecure Janice goads her fiancé into returning to the arms of his previous lover. Britney seemingly has it all with her wonderful husband and baby, but she is pregnant and along with her spouse nearly bankrupt by emulating the rich on a middle class income.

The sequel to BUTTERSCOTCH BLUES, SOME SUNDAY uses vignettes starring the four women to provide insight into a wide range of problems confronting African-American females though the issues seem more universal.

The four female friends emotionally support one another as each one skirmishes with different problems and stress. Margaret Johnson-Hodge shows she is quite an author with this deep look into the darker side of the modern American dream that can only be brightened through friendship and caring relationships.

Very good reading
I enjoyed the way the storyline flowed. In a sequel sometimes you are looking for more perils for the characters to go through. But as with the long lasting TV show FRIENDS...sometimes it's just the everyday events in the lives of people that make for good reading.
Sandy again was the main character...looking for love. Which is tricky with the death of her husband Adrian from AIDS. Some times that can make your next true love--hard to find. But in her case love was waiting but was he REALLY the one for her--or possibly was he suffering from the same amount of grief and looking to replace what was loss...I wonder. I was surprised with what happened to Janice. I always thought she had more confidence than that. But then I guess even the toughest person can just plain ol have enough some time. The other characters Martha and Britney add to the flavor of the book with their 'drama'. Though the book does deal with female relationships I did enjoy the maturity of the characters in this sequel...I enjoyed Butterscotch Blues but in Some Sunday, I could see the characters growth... except for Janice...poor thing. But all in all it was very involving book. there was something to glean and take away from every character.
Looking forward to reading Margaret Johnson Hodges' newest release coming this fall!

A Moving & Realistic Portrayl of Relationships & Life
Some Sunday continues the story of Sandy and her girlfriends Britney, Janice, & Martha, who were all first introduced in Butterscotch Blues. In this sequel, Sandy is struggling to resume living a life she hadn't ever imagined, one that doesn't include her husband Adrian who died from AIDS. Even though he's gone, so many things still remind her of Adrian, especially her brother-in-law Winston, who greatly favors his brother, and who is there to give Sandy support whenever she needs it. As difficult as it is, life tends to spring forth once she meets a man named Randall, a strong man, but one who requires certain elements if he is to be in a relationship. It is through the trials and tribulations of every day things that will prove whether or not Sandy can regain her strength to move forward, or if she will remain flawed by her past and be robbed of all life has to offer.

In addition to seeing how Sandy fares, we're privileged to witness the journeys of Britney a mother and wife, who realizes that she's blessed and is not afraid to acknowledge that, Janice, a woman who seems to have made strides but who must cope and overcome setbacks, and Martha, a lady who battles demons in the only ways she knows how.

As with all her previous works, Margaret Johnson-Hodge has once again penned a story that delves deep beneath the surface of relationships. In this novel, MJH gets down and dirty, from telling the wondrous things of life, to revealing those shocking and unexpected incidents that make us cringe as we realize everyone goes through troubles and must seek to find deliverance. The writer has done an excellent job in bringing forth this sequel, unmasking numerous emotions, showing the strength and downfall of the human spirit, and still providing hope by the story's end. Bravo, Margaret. I'm ready for the next one!

Choices
MJH has scored big again.

True Lies should have been titled, "Baby Mamma Drama".

Rick first love is his daughter Kanisha. His baby mother Gina is a young, simple minded child that doesn't know what a good man she has in Rick until it is too late. Dajah Moore is a sista that seems to have it all together. Recently ended a relationship, Dejah is lonely. When Rick and Dajah meet one evening they are drawn to each other. The drama start to unfold when Rick send Gina and Kanisha packing to start a relationship with Dajah.

MJH's latest work reads like a movie. The emotions run so deep. From time to time I had to close the book due to anger from the choices of the characters. There were no easy answers in this book. HARD DECISIONS. This title is highly recommended.

Best Wishes and support to you Margaret.

lies so true...
i absolutely loved this book! thanks again MJH for another thought-provoking and excellent storyline.

rick(although his intentions were good)is on the verge of messing up a good thing he has w/dajah while trying to deal with his child's mother. he is to be applauded for stepping up to the plate and being more than just a check-writer to his child.

dajah's character displayed what it truly means to love yourself more than you love someone else. the story centers on whether rick and dajah can manage to make their relationship work despite all of gina's(his daughter's mother) tactics to keep them apart. to avoid giving away the ending, i'll just say READ THE BOOK!

in defense of ms. gina...i will say that she was really too young to have had a baby and rick should have known that before getting involved with her. gina's a good-time, live-for-the-moment-girl and it shows in ALL her actions. dajah is what rick and his daughter need in their lives, but when are we truly honest with ourselves?

because we all know that somewhere within the truth, there is always a lie....

Taking a chance on reality
Are true lies the same as half truths or little white lies?
In any event, the book True Lies by Margaret J. Hodge is an
intense, thought provoking story about the things we tell
ourselves and others in order to survive. The three primary
characters were tangled in a precarious triangle, each trying
to believe the half truths they've been telling themselves.

Rick wants so much to believe that his live in girlfriend is
growing up and that she is ready to shed her hip-hop lifestyle,
because he wants some mature good times out of life. Gina met
Rick when she was seventeen and though they've been together
seven years, she is still acting like a teenager. The glue
that holds them together is wrapped neatly in a four year old
package named Kanisha, she is his one true thing; his absolute.
Rick is a good man and is committed to his relationship, then
he bumps into Dajah.

Dajah Moore, remembers the last time she took a chance, she
was eight years old, and it left her with a scar on her knee.
But when Dajah meets Rick, and even though he is not really
free, enough warmth is generated to make her think she is
headed for another big fall. And this time more than her
knee will get scarred.

I've become accustomed to how Ms. Hodge writes, the drama never
overshadows the characters, and this time she delivers again.
The story is so basically human, that it will have readers
sitting back pondering the solution; a solution where undoubtedly
someone will reap and someone will lose. A wonderful human interest
read, I urge you to pick this one up.

Female Drama
Fight's among best friends over 'guys' was just the wrong thing for me to read at this time. By the end of the book I was like SOOO done with all of them. But then I realized HEY I read the whole thing... In 4 hours! So it must have been good! (smile) It was just like old home week though. I know all those women (types) and they get on my nerves...They did in my 20's and 30's and tried to, in my 40's, until I said ENOUGH! They know they can't live without each other! But they need to start living without those MEN! Well, Sandy and Adrian... that was the story of the hour to me and probably most people that read this book. Ending the way you did...with the dread that stays with many who have loved someone new in the last 10 years... was very haunting. I'm just glad I'm an older woman without that constant worry of where love will come from next or even if it's GONNA COME. Whew... what a life that used to be. GOOD STORY. Sad reminder... real reality bite. I will pass it on to my daughter.

A Subject Not Written About Nearly Enough
I found this to be a difficult story to read. It was a painful subject matter and close to home for me for many reasons. I think all of our lives have been touched by the devastation of HIV/AIDS. I loved the all of the characters, particularly Adrian, Brittany and Sandy. This is a real story that's happening to men and women everyday. It also shows the importance of living each day to the fullest. I liked the fact that the story wasn't pretty. Just real. Even down to Adrian's family's dislike of Sandy until they knew the WHOLE story. I was sad that Sandy and Adrian wasted so much precious time trying to make a decision about whether or not they wanted to be together. In the end, hearts don't have eyes and the part we love is that part that we are unable to see or touch. That man or woman's spirit. Excellent book! I look forward to seeing more of this author in the future.

Girl Friends, Girl Friends, Girl Friends!
This moving novel is about so many things - girlfriends, rites of passage, sacred bonds and AIDS.Margaret Johnson-Hodge has written a compassionate story of four best friends, each with her own set of problems and those of her friends. Janice keeps falling love and hoping that this man will be the right man; Martha has success with a capital "S" but never a man to love her; Brittney (my favorite), shy, overweight never gets the man, not even a dance; and Sandy who finally finds love only to have it snatched away in a heartbeat. I read this book for my bookclub and found myself reading it every free moment. Ms. Johnson-Hodge is a heck of a story teller and Butterscotch Blues is the perfect title for this thought provoking novel. It makes you laugh, cry and glad to have good friends who have your back.Vannie(~.~)

A real look at self worth
Warm Hands is the story of self esteem, or the lack thereof and about finding that inner peace and holding on. Mya measures every man by the standards of the first man she loved, her father. But her father's mold was flawed and she watched her mother accept or ignore his faults. Mya has been in a relationship with Vincent too long and when she pressures for a committment, he ends it so Mya tries to lose herself in her daily runs. She meets stable dependable Jeff, and is sharing a mutually committed relationship. Mya is then ready to marry and is feeling good about her life, but, Vincent is back with his same sweet talk. After an ill advised liasion with Vincent, bringing closure to her past, she confesses and Jeff walks out.

Alone and aware she has lost a good man, Mya internalizes and she reflects on her parent's dysunctional home life, her lack of self esteem and how she's looked for her father in all her men. She accepts her problem, confronts her family and begins her healing process.

Johnson-Hodge takes us on a journey that too few people have taken. She lets Mya realize in order to be loved, you must first love yourself and that she needed the faith and conviction to believe that all good things will come in time. And for Mya they did.

Deep, Deep, Deep....
Warm Hands offers a realistic story about a thirty something sista who is forced to take a serious look at herself and make some changes. We must love overself before we can expect anyone else to. When one doesn't love self it shows.

Decisions, Decisions....Why did Mya cheat on Jeff? What a dysfunctional family. Old Scotty was a bit much. I was glad when Claudia got fed up and packed her bags. She should have done that a long long time ago.

I agree with one of the other readers. My favorite quote from the book: " I'm not asking you out..I'm asking you in.." That is too deep.

This book is one that will stay with me for awhile. I think each reader can relate to some of the issues at one point or another in their life. This is an excellent novel and the message is clear...Love Yourself First. Everything else will fall into place.

Margaret, Thanks for a great read. I can't wait to read "Butterscoth Blues". I wish you much success. Be Blessed!

Just what women need to read..
Warm Hands is a story of a woman's journey to self-love. Like so many women, Mya unknowningly dates the same kind of men that are just like her father. She finds herself searching for love in all the wrong places and has accepted the only love is the "wrong love" that she had seen her mother live with.

When she finally meets Jeff, someone who's loving, honest and faithful, she panicks, "can't be real love", no lies, no games, no where have you been all night" like the her past relationships and the one her mother had been in for years with her father.

What happens next is all too familar in relationships. This book is a must read for women. Margaret Johnson-Hodge does an excellent job at writng a story that so eloquently describes the evolution of love -- self love. Go out and buy this book!

Modern Irish Cooking
I didn't particularly like this book, I'm more into traditional cooking and these recipes were a little too trendy/nouveau for my preferences. I think if you are interested in non-traditional Irish cooking you would probably enjoy this book.

The Irish Heritage Cookbook
I bought this book for some ideas for St Pat's day. Now I use it all the time. The Irish stew tastes just like it did in a pub in Ireland. My sons love the guinnes beef stew. My co-workers have borrowed it to make some of the recipes as well. And tonite I'm making the oatmeal apple crisp. Even if you are not irish, you'll wish you were after eating some of these delicious meals.

Great book! Authentic recipes!
This book is packed with recipes that are authentic and delicious. I highly recommend it not only for the food, but for the history. Great find!

Not worth your time!
As of now I am completing drivers Ed. We take tests over this book, and I feel it is rather outdated for what it is being used for. The pictures are helpful, but the text I found boring and most of the text seemed just to be fill. They streched out simple procedures, and filled the usefull information with unimportant details. If you want to pass the test, read your state drivers manual. If you think this will help you, try it, but I warn you, its not worth it. Your state drivers manual is worth you time, check it out!

Great for drivers awareness
I have read some of the reviews and it appears to me that the ones who don't like this book are the children who had to read it. First of all this book is not written for each state, so you will have to check on your own state or county laws along with this book. As for this book not helping you pass the "TEST". Responsible drivers know that their is much much more to driving then passing the "TEST", which this book goes into great detail letting its readers know. I've been A police officer for almost 9 years and now work at a school and deal with children all the time and a lot of thing seem boring to them. But we as adults must continue the teach, and hope that some of what they read sinks in. When dealing with driving a vehicle, learning by experience a lot of times ends up to late. This book doesn't teach you how to pass the "TEST" it teaches you how to be a better driver, something we all need to be...

Right On Drive Right
This driver's ed curriculum is outstanding! My son knows things I don't. I would fail the final test if I had to take it. It is thorough and keeps the reader's interest with colorful illustrations. My son passed the DMV test with flying colors.
