While Sandy toils with finding a reason to live, her best friends also struggle with life. In the courtroom Martha the assistant DA is a grandmaster, but her personal life consists of alcohol and the drudgery of trying not to lose her lover. Insecure Janice goads her fiancé into returning to the arms of his previous lover. Britney seemingly has it all with her wonderful husband and baby, but she is pregnant and along with her spouse nearly bankrupt by emulating the rich on a middle class income.
The sequel to BUTTERSCOTCH BLUES, SOME SUNDAY uses vignettes starring the four women to provide insight into a wide range of problems confronting African-American females though the issues seem more universal.
The four female friends emotionally support one another as each one skirmishes with different problems and stress. Margaret Johnson-Hodge shows she is quite an author with this deep look into the darker side of the modern American dream that can only be brightened through friendship and caring relationships.

Sandy again was the main character...looking for love. Which is tricky with the death of her husband Adrian from AIDS. Some times that can make your next true love--hard to find. But in her case love was waiting but was he REALLY the one for her--or possibly was he suffering from the same amount of grief and looking to replace what was loss...I wonder. I was surprised with what happened to Janice. I always thought she had more confidence than that. But then I guess even the toughest person can just plain ol have enough some time. The other characters Martha and Britney add to the flavor of the book with their 'drama'. Though the book does deal with female relationships I did enjoy the maturity of the characters in this sequel...I enjoyed Butterscotch Blues but in Some Sunday, I could see the characters growth... except for Janice...poor thing. But all in all it was very involving book. there was something to glean and take away from every character.
Looking forward to reading Margaret Johnson Hodges' newest release coming this fall!
In addition to seeing how Sandy fares, we're privileged to witness the journeys of Britney a mother and wife, who realizes that she's blessed and is not afraid to acknowledge that, Janice, a woman who seems to have made strides but who must cope and overcome setbacks, and Martha, a lady who battles demons in the only ways she knows how.
As with all her previous works, Margaret Johnson-Hodge has once again penned a story that delves deep beneath the surface of relationships. In this novel, MJH gets down and dirty, from telling the wondrous things of life, to revealing those shocking and unexpected incidents that make us cringe as we realize everyone goes through troubles and must seek to find deliverance. The writer has done an excellent job in bringing forth this sequel, unmasking numerous emotions, showing the strength and downfall of the human spirit, and still providing hope by the story's end. Bravo, Margaret. I'm ready for the next one!

True Lies should have been titled, "Baby Mamma Drama".
Rick first love is his daughter Kanisha. His baby mother Gina is a young, simple minded child that doesn't know what a good man she has in Rick until it is too late. Dajah Moore is a sista that seems to have it all together. Recently ended a relationship, Dejah is lonely. When Rick and Dajah meet one evening they are drawn to each other. The drama start to unfold when Rick send Gina and Kanisha packing to start a relationship with Dajah.
MJH's latest work reads like a movie. The emotions run so deep. From time to time I had to close the book due to anger from the choices of the characters. There were no easy answers in this book. HARD DECISIONS. This title is highly recommended.
Best Wishes and support to you Margaret.
rick(although his intentions were good)is on the verge of messing up a good thing he has w/dajah while trying to deal with his child's mother. he is to be applauded for stepping up to the plate and being more than just a check-writer to his child.
dajah's character displayed what it truly means to love yourself more than you love someone else. the story centers on whether rick and dajah can manage to make their relationship work despite all of gina's(his daughter's mother) tactics to keep them apart. to avoid giving away the ending, i'll just say READ THE BOOK!
in defense of ms. gina...i will say that she was really too young to have had a baby and rick should have known that before getting involved with her. gina's a good-time, live-for-the-moment-girl and it shows in ALL her actions. dajah is what rick and his daughter need in their lives, but when are we truly honest with ourselves?
because we all know that somewhere within the truth, there is always a lie....
In any event, the book True Lies by Margaret J. Hodge is an
intense, thought provoking story about the things we tell
ourselves and others in order to survive. The three primary
characters were tangled in a precarious triangle, each trying
to believe the half truths they've been telling themselves.
Rick wants so much to believe that his live in girlfriend is
growing up and that she is ready to shed her hip-hop lifestyle,
because he wants some mature good times out of life. Gina met
Rick when she was seventeen and though they've been together
seven years, she is still acting like a teenager. The glue
that holds them together is wrapped neatly in a four year old
package named Kanisha, she is his one true thing; his absolute.
Rick is a good man and is committed to his relationship, then
he bumps into Dajah.
Dajah Moore, remembers the last time she took a chance, she
was eight years old, and it left her with a scar on her knee.
But when Dajah meets Rick, and even though he is not really
free, enough warmth is generated to make her think she is
headed for another big fall. And this time more than her
knee will get scarred.
I've become accustomed to how Ms. Hodge writes, the drama never
overshadows the characters, and this time she delivers again.
The story is so basically human, that it will have readers
sitting back pondering the solution; a solution where undoubtedly
someone will reap and someone will lose. A wonderful human interest
read, I urge you to pick this one up.

Alone and aware she has lost a good man, Mya internalizes and she reflects on her parent's dysunctional home life, her lack of self esteem and how she's looked for her father in all her men. She accepts her problem, confronts her family and begins her healing process.
Johnson-Hodge takes us on a journey that too few people have taken. She lets Mya realize in order to be loved, you must first love yourself and that she needed the faith and conviction to believe that all good things will come in time. And for Mya they did.

Decisions, Decisions....Why did Mya cheat on Jeff? What a dysfunctional family. Old Scotty was a bit much. I was glad when Claudia got fed up and packed her bags. She should have done that a long long time ago.
I agree with one of the other readers. My favorite quote from the book: " I'm not asking you out..I'm asking you in.." That is too deep.
This book is one that will stay with me for awhile. I think each reader can relate to some of the issues at one point or another in their life. This is an excellent novel and the message is clear...Love Yourself First. Everything else will fall into place.
Margaret, Thanks for a great read. I can't wait to read "Butterscoth Blues". I wish you much success. Be Blessed!
When she finally meets Jeff, someone who's loving, honest and faithful, she panicks, "can't be real love", no lies, no games, no where have you been all night" like the her past relationships and the one her mother had been in for years with her father.
What happens next is all too familar in relationships. This book is a must read for women. Margaret Johnson-Hodge does an excellent job at writng a story that so eloquently describes the evolution of love -- self love. Go out and buy this book!
