God as Communion
This is another welcome addition to the growing corpus on "communion theology" in the English language. The provided sample pages can speak for themselves, so I won't write anything too detailed. I would, however, make a few recommendations for other similar books. Concerning "God talk" and the divine names, a defense of traditional naming can be found in "Speaking the Christian God", ed. by Kimel. Of course the works of both John Zizioulas and Elizabeth Fox are relelvant, especially Zizioulas' "Being as Communion". "God For Us" by Catherine LaCugna is very scholarly and relelvant in that it places the Trinitarian debate within the context of the personal relationships. In other words, like Zizioulas, LaCugna sees the Trinity as the Primal communion of love by which all things, especially human personhood, hold together and find their end (and beginning!). Beautiful book for the golfer & golf fan
This deluxe volume covers each of the courses on the PGA Tour and has several full color pictures of key holes on each course covered. Since some PGA tour events are replaced by new ones, the book may become slightly dated but, nonetheless, it is a great spectator's guide for those who watch the tour each week on TV or who occasionally attend tour events in person. The volume also includes a great map of each course covered. This is useful because it puts the course in perspective, For example, I have seen the famous 13th hole at Augusta National on TV many times but never appreciated how sharp a dogleg it is until seeing the map. Also, the map shows the direction each hole runs in relation to other holes. For example one hole may go out and the next hole come back in the opposite direction. The maps give you this perspective. Another great feature of the book is a short piece written by a golfer who has won the tournament played on that course. I highly recommend this wonderful book.

Great as a reference book!
I just received this book and I think it is excellent. Chapters start with an introduction or summary, and end with either a conclusion or implications section, which makes it easy to preview the topic without having to read a lot. There are 3 things I should warn prospective buyers, though: it is expensive ($89.95 the paperback edition!), it is extensive (enciclopedic, with almost a 1000 pages), and it is written for "people in the know" (NOT a beginners' book). But because it is so extensive, it has a chapter on every topic on personality psychology theories I could think of. Great as a reference book!

Inforamtive and well written book on the history of steam do
In Search of Steam Donkeys is a well writen and very informative book. At a time when there is very little information on steam donkeys other than by word of mouth, this book sheds considerable light on a rather specialized and certainly interesting topic.

The best book on Portland!
Recently I relocated to the Portland area from California. I bought and received 4-5 different books on "About Portland" and this by far was the greatest help. This book helped me determine where I wanted to live, where I want to go on the weekend and where to eat. There is a ton of helpful information on where to go and what to do. It has become my bible for the area. If you are planning to move here or just visit- a great purchase.

0...Sept 2002- I still use this book monthly after a year and a half. Can't say enough good about it or how much it has helped me get to know where I live.

J.R.R. Tolkien : Six Decades of Criticism
Published in Hardcover by Greenwood Publishing Group (1986)
Author: Judith A. Johnson
Amazon base price: $82.95
Used price: $84.71
Average review score:

Outstanding bibliography of Tolkien criticism
This chronologically-organized bibliography provides a list (sometimes descriptive, sometimes not) of Tolkien criticism up through 1984. It also contains brief bibliographical entries for Tolkien's own published works. Needless to say, the overwhelming majority of listings pertain to Tolkien's fiction-- especially his masterwork, _The Lord of the Rings_. However, it does include reviews and responses to his more scholarly publications (for example, it lists reviews of his and Gordon's edition of _Sir Gawain & the Green Knight_ as well as responses to his articles "Chaucer as Philologist" and "Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics"). In terms of its comprehensiveness, this book is far more thorough than any other Tolkien criticism bibliographies (e.g Richard C. West's). Johnson is to be praised for including articles that appeared in the major Tolkien fanzines (Mythlore, Orcrist, Amon Hen, Minas Tirith Evening Star, Seven, etc.) and for including information on which university libraries actually have these periodicals. However, it should be noted that her survey of these fanzines is not comprehensive-- reviews of secondary works about Tolkien that appeared in fanzines are not generally listed and there are some even more obscure items that got left out here. Some of those missing, in fairness, are really minor self-published items and are extremeley rare and obscure-- things that only had 100-issue runs and only lasted 1-2 issues. While unlikely to be found even in excellent research libraries, many of them are available for consultation in the Marquette University Special Collections (which has a very large collection of Tolkieniana). If a second edition of this essential bibliography ever appears (and one should-- it's been almost two decades since the first one!)-- I hope it includes not only post-1984 material, but also some more fanzine content from these obscurities.

Great Scholars, Excellent Discussion
This book provides an excellent overview of some of the most important current topics in Historical Jesus Study. They include:(1) a study of Galilee at the time of Jesus (by E. P. Sanders); (2) a comparison and analysis of Jesus's teachings with the doctrines contained in the Dead Sea Scrolls (by Daniel J. Harrington); (3) some preliminary musings by John P. Meier about how he will reconcile the Elijah-like miracle working prophet who has emerged to date from his "Marginal Jew" series with the early remembrance of Jesus as the Davidic Messiah; (4)an assement of the important role of oral traditions as sources for the Gospels (by James D. G. Dunn); and finally, a respected systematic theologian's perspective on the importance and usefulness of honest and objective historical Jesus research in terms of nurturing the Christian faith (by Elizabeth A. Johnson).

The contributors are all leading scholars who are excited about their subjects. They brilliantly employ the tools of honest, objective, historical criticism--but they also do not apologise for their faith. This short collection provides an excellent introduction to the work and thought processes of these wonderful scholars. I recommend it highly.

Crazy world of JFK and LBJ leaps from pages.
The thing you need to remember when reading this book- and believe me, you will read it, is that Johnson had trouble dealing with Kennedy becoming president only 6 years after playing a good little Democrat boy in the Senate. Johnson forced Kennedy to play ball and later Kennedy forced Johnson to play ball with him. The book is riviting.

Latin America in Caricature (Texas Pan American Series)
Published in Paperback by Univ of Texas Press (1993)
Author: John J. Johnson
Amazon base price: $16.95
Used price: $5.29
Average review score:

A unique book, as entertaining as it is informative.
This book genuinely deserves a 5-star rating. Johnson not only gives fine insights into the nature of US stereotypes about Latin America/ns, he provides dozens of samples of a key source: editorial cartoons from US newspapers. They both intentionally & unintentionally reveal our prejudices & preconceptions about the regions & peoples who share the Western Hemisphere with us. The book has a sound introduction, but the heart of it is the cartoons themselves, which appear on odd-numbered pages with 1/2 to 1-page commentary opposite. These commentaries are essential to the book's success, because they give context to many old cartoons which are otherwise as obscure as the long-ago events they depict. The emphasis is on major episodes in US-Latin American relations (Spanish-Cuban-Philippine-American War; Mexican Revolution; Good Neighbor Policy; Castro's Cuba, etc.). While the cartoons are overtly political to a great extent, Johnson's accompanying analyses skilfully reveal the cultural, ethnic & racial essentialism underpinning our perceptions of Latin America. Many readers will be surprised to learn how deep are the roots of such attitudes. Less surprisingly, the images, which have both influenced & reflected US attitudes, mostly portray negative stereotypes, but even these have varied over time with the shifting course of events. This book would be an outstanding text to use in a general Latin American Studies class, and also in courses on US-Latin American foreign relations. It is hardly a dryasdust academic treatise, & would be enjoyed by interested members of the general public. However, it could also be supplemented by works with a fuller discussion of the topic, such as Frederick Pike, "The United States and Latin America: Myths and Stereotypes of Civilization and Culture" (U of Texas Press, 1992).
