Great photos of a cross section of churches
Great photographs are herein presented of 100 Chicago-area churches. A must-see, must-have for any Chicagoan--for any Midwesterner, for that matter. The cross section includes the "bold and beautiful" as well as the "plain and ordinary" and the store-front church. The book is not limited to Christian churches, but features worship sites of other faiths as well.

chicago churches: a photographic essay
this is simply a beautiful book, both the photographs and the over all design of the book. as a photographer/designer i was inspired by such a wonderful book.

Chicago Churches
This is a brilliantly crafted, mature work from a remarkably young artist. The photographs are magnificently rendered to show not only the architectural beauty and diversity of Chicago's many churches, but also the neighborhoods they are a part of. This is a book to pour over again and again, a must-have whether you're religious or not!

enjoyed the book when I was younger
I read the Elizabeth Gail books when I was 11 years old, and even though I'm 18, I still remember them fondly. They really opened up my eyes about what life could be like for a foster child. This book is good because it is realistic. It doesn't make anybody look like a saint and it shows that even Christians get mad at other people. I hope everyone enjoys the series as much as I did.

Loves the Series
I think that this book is a great book. It shows that you shouldn't always jump to conclusions. Also that not everyone's perfect. In fact no one is! It tells me what it must be like to have a mother who doesn't take care of you. It shows that even the most godly people can get mad or jealous. I've always loved these series. Even if this review isn't much help, you should at least try it.

The Elizabeth Gail books are a must read for all young girls
I have read several of Hilda Stahl's books. I bought them for my own girls when they were young; now I am buying them for my granddaughter. I cannot review this book without reviewing the series as a whole. Hilda's books are the most read books in our school library. Hilda Stahl was a gifted, talented woman whose writing has captivated thousands of children. I know this because Hilda and her family were good friends of ours when we lived in Michigan. We attended the same church, and our children attended school together. She will be missed. Diane Augustyniak, McHenry, Illinois.

THE REUNION PLANNER
THIS BOOK PROVIDED ME WITH SOME GREAT IDEAS. I HAD NEVER PLANNED A REUNION BEFORE. THIS BOOK MADE IT VERY EASY. THE SOFTWARE IS GREAT TOO!

The "Library Journal" review, Feb. 15th edition
"The Library Journal" just gave "The Reunion Planner" book and software program a rave review. It ended with "The Bottom Line: Anyone planning a reunion should get their hands on "The Reunion Planner" as soon as possible: it will save you enormous amounts of time and effort and ensure a successful event. A wonderful resource, enthusiastically recommended for all library collections and individuals with reunions in mind. Libraries need two copies--one for reference and one to circulate."
by Cheryl LaGuardia, "The Library Journal"

This Really Is THE Reunion Planner
After reading this book, "The Reunion Planner", I sent them the following email, which I believe tells the most honest review that I could give this book.

"Thank you very much for taking the time and energy to create The Reunion Planner book, software, and this web site. I checked out your book from the Bettendorf Public Library. I honestly believe that anyone who tries to plan a very successful reunion without your book is crazy. It has everything you need. I was so impressed that I visited this web site just so I could order the book and the software for myself."

For those of you who have not read this book it covers family reunions, high school reunions, and even military reunions. The Reunion Planner gives you step-by-step instructions on how to plan your reunion. It starts with what you should be doing about one year before the reunion and concludes with the follow-up work after a reunion that will make it easier for you or someone else to plan the next reunion.

great in theory, but reality's a little different
while i think a book like this is definitely needed, this one is not it. i want a book that provides me with examples, anecdotes, exercises, etc. i also don't want a book that advocates the boy scouts as a good resource - the homophobia of the boyscouts is something i'll avoid.

nope, if you want a great glbt parenting book (and i've read them all), get the queer parent's primer, by stephanie brill

Hooray!
Having finished my copy of For Lesbian Parents, I am now logging on to buy one for everyone I know! This accessible book will become the new "bible" of lesbian parenting....it has everything you ever needed to know! I especially liked the interviews with all kinds of lesbian moms that were woven into the chapters, and the stories that the authors share about their own families are warm, personal and amusing! The authors are inclusive and thorough - couples and families, schools, churches, break ups, sexuality, homophobia and more! This gentle guide takes us through the difficult process of parenting - and the sometimes even more difficult process of lesbian parenting - with reassurance and celebration! Put this on the gift list of everyone you know!

What we've been waiting for!
For Lesbian Parents offers a long-awaited, intelligent and insightful guide to two-mom families! The book is accessible, informative, user-friendly, and it's format covers everything from answering children's questions to religious issues to artificial insemination options! The authors, both Ph.D's in Developmental Psychology offer a "what to expect when you're expecting" format, with developmental guidelines, boxed facts, and interweave beautifully their own personal experiences as lesbian moms. Their research and their gentle humor are both reassuring, as both conclude that not only are children in lesbian families doing just fine - in some ways, they are especially blessed! This book is a must have for anyone who is considering becoming a lesbian family, or for anyone who knows or loves a lesbian family!

Some interesting insights....but based on faulty assumptions
I found the book to be an endless and somewhat unnecessary attack on classical theism. Her notions of pauline theology, based on a platonic dualism, have been shown to be baseless. The disparities and divisions of the church and society are not proven in her work to stem from classical theism, but are assumed. The church which she diminishes has worked to bridge culturally created divisions, which she fails to admit to. Her pandering into pantheism and panentheism are also disappointing, for she reveals her true intention of not reforming the church, but espousing a new religion.

The world needs She Who Is
Johnson writes with an ultimate goal in mind, that of a transformation into new community. Her vision is one in which harmony with each other and with the earth are realized; an eschatological dream of a new heaven and a new earth where justice dwells and partnership reigns.
As a first step toward this vision her book offers theologicaly founded evidence for expanding our image of God. Language functions; selling a god of violence,or superiority based on maleness or color is not helping us to realize a vision of the kindom of God put forth by Jesus-one where all are included at God's loving banquet. Without this first step toward expanding God's image we humans will always be in violent dissonance with each other and with the earth.
I have read this book no less than six times, it has infomed my vision of the world and my personal goals in life. The language she uses is poetical and moves to the core of our being linking us with the holy.

Thank you She Who Is
I was first introduced to this classic when I began researching my undergraduate thesis on women's oppression in Christianity. I was then, and still am, thoroughly impressed with Johnson's work. Her scholarship is impecable, reasoning very solid, and takes a well-rounded approach. This work is founded in tradition, yet manages to break from the aspects of tradition which are oppressive. Her philosophical background is also quite solid. You can't get any better than Elizabeth Johnson. She is masterful at weaving theological discourse and spirituality together. This is not a theological head-trip! The relevance of her work not only applies to theologians, it applies to laypersons as well. The sections on Sophia are particularly moving. Johnson also manages to address the issue of exclusive God-language in a subtle manner, which a reader would be hardpressed to take offense to, and presents new inclusive ways of speaking about God founded in biblical scholarship, All in all, this is a fantastic work of theology with elements of spirituality. I can't recommend it enough!

Ambivalent...
As an African American quilter, I had mixed feelings about this book. While I felt that the quilt projects were beautiful and the book itself interesting, I felt a little cheated when I realized that the authors were not of African heritage themselves. I know that shouldn't make a difference, that Africa was their inspiration and inspiration is neither inclusive nor exclusive, but I was still disappointed. There is a rich African and African American quilting tradition out there. Please look to those books for inspiration as well.

Mary Elizabeth Johnson has given me Africa and the world!!!
Quilt Inspirations from Africa is a fitting tribute to the beautiful tradition of designing and creating the complex yet simple quilt designs of Africa.

The book itself is an incredible design. It warms your hands and delights your eyes as you behold the colors of African sand, sky and clay in the colors used on the cover. The graphics are clear and rich and provide a wonderful level of detail of the designs that are covered.

The use of diagrams and symbols was well executed and I was especially pleased to learn the meaning of the listed Adinkra symbols and their story. They reminded me of the symbols in the book 1000 Symbols ' What shapes mean in art and myth ' written by Rowena and Rupert Shepard.

As Mary has done so ably in past books, she takes us into the lives and communal folkways of the quilters, whose work she is representing to the world. And she goes one important step further ' she gives us the tools and instructions needed to help perpetuate and preserve these traditions by teaching us how to design, layout and stitch them for ourselves.

Great job on an incredible book.

A Terrific Source of Inspiration
This book provides excellent examples of how to adapt images and ideas from other cultures to contemporary, Western objects. The reasarch is highly credible and the applications inspired and easy to follow. It is a must have for anyone who quilts or who is interested in adapting motifs form other cultures and eras to any art form, including beading and other forms of embroidery.

Very Possitive Approach
I'm an ESL teacher. I found it to be a great teaching tool for final year high school students and professional formation courses. Although it was written for American use, that can be worked around to facilitate its use in a more international context. I found it to be a VERY POSSITIVE AND INOVATIVE APPROACH to teaching ESL students how to find a job. Well done!

New Hotels for Global Nomads
Traditional hotels defy the reality of transience, offering a reassurance to weary travelers that they'll enjoy the familiar comforts of home. One pities anyone whose idea of domestic bliss is a Ramada Inn. This catalogue of an exhibition running through March 2 at the Cooper-Hewitt in New York, celebrates a fresh approach that puts chic ahead of comfort, and makes every guest realize she isn't in Kansas anymore. It intersperses W Hotels and the properties of Ian Schraeger and Andre Balasz with blue-sky projects that--if realized--might make you wish you had stayed home. That's especially true of one that was built--Jean Nouvel's hotel in Lucerne--where every ceiling is silkscreened with a movie still that could inspire nightmares. Maybe that Ramada wasn't so bad, after all. (Michael Webb is the book reviewer for LA Architect magazine.)
