A chilling story and a metaphor
"Lone Tree" is an account of a killing rampage by a one-time prosperous Iowa farmer and a metaphor about the killing of the American farmer during the 1980's. Author Bruce Brown does a great job of examining the psychology of prosperity, the cause and consequences of Federal Farm policies, and the forces that propelled Dale Barr to kill his neighbor, wife, and banker. As we see and smell corporate hog confinements dotting our landscape and witness the continued fall of farm incomes, the conditions for a reenactment of the tragedy of Lone Tree exist. Not a fun book, but a good one.

EXCELLENT MANAGEMENT TIPS
"Managing For Excellence" is a portable well-illustrated handbook, which harbours all the essential tips for improving (individual) performance. The book is very straightforward. It is comprehensive, and highlights all the important factors that strengthen and weakens partnerships.
This is one book which helps its user to better understand strategies and improve output. It is superbly organized, and presents its techniques in a practical format.
However, anyone who already has the "Successful Manager's Handbook" need not spend on this one. Both books contain similar information.

Two thumbs way up
This is latest update for the most revered text in the field of cell and molecular biology. I used this book as an undergraduate even though this was not the required text for the course. I still turn to it often as a graduate student. As someone who has read the book cover to cover I can vouch for its extensive coverage of the most important concepts and the abandance of information on the most frequntly encountered concepts. It is a must have for any serious student of cell, molecular and developmental biology. I recommend that you buy this book in addition to any required texts for your course. The book is so comprehensive that even topics that gained prominance in 2002 such as RNA interference are wonderfully presented. Even if you are new to this subject area this book if properly used can increase you understanding immensely of even the most difficult of concepts. You would never regret buying this.

Still the Best textbook on Cellular Biology!
I'm an undergraduate student in Biology and I was looking for the best book on the subject... after a hard selection of the best ones available, I came up with two great items: Lodish's Cell Molecular Biology and Alberts's Molecular Biology of the Cell.
When I spoke with my older colleagues in college and asked my Cell Biology teachers (they're both career researchers) for their opinion about what should I buy, I always received the same kind of answer: «Well, they're both great references, Lodish's is a very insightful text on the matter, as well as Alberts's. But you know... Alberts's is the real thing, the one to go for: It gives you the most wonderful and comprehensive view of the cellular world!»
So, I decided to buy Alberts's and indeed, it is a terrific book: accurate, up-to-date, really enjoyable to read (for those avid for scientific knowledge), the English is quite accessible, illustrations are excellent, a truly great achievement! From now on, this book will be my «bible»!

Molecular Biology of the Cell
Molecular Biology of the Cell is one of the best surveys available on the status of current information about cellular biology. The authors skillfully accomplish the difficult task of combining detail with readability while conveying the excitement of this dynamic field. Clear, concise, and colorful illustrations assist in this task and the book is a fine collection of splendidly dramatic photos of "molecular biology of the cell" in action. They covered an enormous amount of material with a style that is simple enough for a college-level biology student to follow with enough detail and references to be of use to an experienced research scientist. Bravo for a job well-done!

Outstanding!
I had the opportunity to see Bruce Lee in action at an East Coast karate tournament in 1969. He wasn't competing but was there as a celebrity guest.

I stood with others at the back of the tournament hall and listened in awe as he talked about having just finished filming Marlow and his plans to leave soon for Hong Kong to begin filming a movie.

Later, I watched him warm-up a great tournament fighter named Luis Delgado. Lee's speed was absolutely incredible. His backfist was nearly imperceptible and his footwork for closing the gap was a blur.

What a loss to the martial arts world that he left us so soon. But we still have this book of his notes. It a wonderful bible, if you will, that will make any martial artist look at his own training to see how some of Lee's ideas can fit.

There will always be the Jackie Chans and Jet Lis who will come along and dazzle us with their screen antics. But Bruce Lee was a seeker of knowledge, a true master of the fighting arts and philosophy. Some of it is in this wonderful book.

As an author of 13 books on the martial arts, I highly recommend this book for every MA library.

A MUST HAVE FOR ANY EDUCATED PERSON
A gem of a book. It puts at the hands of lay people the wonders of molecular biology. The best way of spending $65 I can think of.

The text is a most refined product distilled by an all-star team of leading scientists. Oriented towards the lay person or the would be specialist, it is simple, unpretentious, sometimes even funny, but always powerfully explanatory. The diagrams are exceptionally clear (a must for explaining such complex subjects) and the photographs are astounding. Love for their subject and passion for teaching are present all along. And mysticism is always around the corner...

If you have ever wondered things like "What are exactly chromosomes?", "How do exactly enzymes work in the cell?", or "How the hell does all this machinery work at a purely chemical level ?" and you are not quite satisfied with popular science books, this one is for you. It will answer these questions and much, much more.

An enjoyable, deeply satisfying tour the force through the molecular level of all living organisms.

Don't miss it!

Superb introduction to cell biology for short courses
I have used Essential Cell Biology for my one semester introductory cell biology and found it to be superb!! It's perfect for a one semester undergraduate course, as well as a terrific overview for laymen with a strong interest in how and why cells work. For introductory cell biology courses, nothing on the market comes even close to this text. Like its larger predecessor, Molecular Biology of the Cell, the text is clearly written, informative, and downright interesting, a rare commodity in textbook writing. Once again, James Watson's superb writing style shows through in this book. The numerous illustrations are a superb complement to the text, explaining and reinforcing the concepts presented in the text. In addition to its use as a text for one semester courses, I would also recommend this to interested laypersons who have an interest in how cells work at the molecular level and are not satisfied with the few popular-level books on the topic. Here they will find a gold mine of insights into the marvels of cell structure and function, all of it clearly written and accessable to anyone with a good high school or mediocre college background in basic chemistry and biology. The only drawbacks of this book is the limited suggestions for further readings and the sparse information on the techniques used to study cells. Otherwise, it is a terrific, attractivly presented, superbly written and illustrated book. It is a real asset to all who have an interest in the cell, except for publishers of competing texts, who are likely to lose most of their markets to this excellent book.

An excellent introduction to cell biology
I used this book as a studying supplement during the cell biology module of my first-year biology course. It explains key cell biology concepts clearly, thoroughly and concisely. The text is very well written and has wonderful photographs and diagrams throughout. Updated and recent biological and biomedical findings are used to further tie in the concepts of cell biology. Those that prefer a more detailed source of information should look to Molecular Biology of the Cell, but for beginners, Essential Cell Biology is an excellent place to start.

Weber's Book Disappoints.
No one captures the male form better than Bruce Weber. Unfortunately, Bruce's pricy coffe table book has little more to offer than the Abercrombie & Fitch catalog. The small size of the book along with its limited nude photos make it a tepid work of erotic photography at best. Out of an estimated 150 photos only about 6 show the subject nude. Sure the subject is hot and the photographs are beautiful, but you can find similar ones from Weber in periodicals.

It's all about Peter Johnson
I love Bruce Weber's latest book with the exciting sexy photos of my now favorite model Peter Johnson. He is the most photogenic person I have seen in a while. I was thrilled to discover another photobook that was released at the same time as "the Chop Suey Club" called "The Class of Click" featuring Peter Johnson again. This book represents the hottest fashion model of the agency Click in a highschool yearbook format. Needless to say that Peter takes on different roles in that hyperreal set highschool and looks amazing. It's all about Peter Johnson.

The Chop Suey Club
This was the first Bruce Weber book i bought & i was very pleased. In The Chop Suey Club, Weber chronicles the growth of young wrestler Peter Johnson for 3+ years as a late teenager. Bruce has a great eye for spotting beautiful men and his 3 year photologue, The Chop Suey Club, demonstrates this well. Weber captures Peter's beauty in everything from a speedo to exotic dress clothes and various states of dress & undress in between. Weber uses a wide range of poses and ideas in these photos with his usual emphasis on the erotic. Several poems, still-life shots, & photos of nature are also included in The Chop Suey Club, but the emphasis is on young Peter Johnson. The book is in a smaller format than most Weber books, but it is thicker & has more photos than most of his other books. Weber also uses color photos much more so than in his other books. The Chop Suey Club is the kind of photography book you page through slowly when you first get it & you then later refer back to again and again. I like this Weber book the best & i recommend it to those who appreciate male beauty & fine photography, especially when viewed through Bruce Weber's lens.

Introduction to Naval Architecture

Great for novices and experts
This is a great text for everyone. I think Zubaly's Applied Naval Architecture does a slightly better job in presenting the coefficients, but in every other respect, this text is superior. Zubaly and this text are weak in the details of seakeeping, but there are several other specific seakeeping texts, namely Dynamics of Marine Vehicles by Battacharia (I know I misspelled his name)

The most complete NA reference available
With the possible exception of SNAME's "Principles of Naval Architecture," "Introduction to Naval Architecture" is the perfect introductory text for any naval architecture/marine engineering student. It includes brief but dense overviews of hydrostatics, hydrodynamics, ship structure, resistance, and propulsion. While there are more detailed texts for each of the above topics (again, SNAME's PNA does a good job as a reference, but not so much as a text, and Harvald's "Resistance and Propulsion of Ships" is THE text for that topic), it is the perfect source for equations, derivations, illustrations, graphs, and, most importantly, example problems. It's very hard to find any clear examples of NA problems in most texts - the examples in this book are worked through step by step, which makes comprehension a breeze. If you're studying or working in the field of naval architecture, this book is a necessary addition to your reference library.

Not a bad first outing for 'The Son of Skywalker'
Although it wasn't the greatest comic book story I've read, it's definitely a good first effort by co-writer Mark Hamill. A rather interesting look at the potential of being a so-called superhero in the real world. It's also a story about how certain situations and circumstances can blow things way out of proportion, especially when the news media's involved. This is exactly what happens to a man who's basically a stalker turned superhero, and a notorious media celebrity (allegedly made in the mold of entertainment/media sensationalists like Jerry Springer & Tom Green) takes advantage- and fans the flames- of the craze that follows.

Originally a screenplay for a proposed film, Hamill and co-writer Eric Johnson turned to the original superhero medium- comics- to tell the tale. After reading this mini-series, I saw that a few parts of it would've been better translated part of a movie. But as well, there are several scenes that are pure comic book moments.

My only problem with the trade paperback is that Dark Horse edited a few parts that were in the original mini-series. All of the panels that originally depicted exposed female mammaries have now been covered with brassieres and halter tops. I guess I'll have to read 'The Black Pearl' for more wholesome reasons now...

'Late!

Black Pearl
The Black Pearl is an excellent comic book mini-series for the following reasons: it's original, has character depth and exceptional art work. But above all, Hamill himself astounds me; he's multi-talented and for him to be able to pull me into a movie screen as well as a comic book is nothing short of genius. Good job, Mr. Hamill!

i loved this comic book!
mark hamill is soooo talented! he can not only pull my attention into the big and little screens, but also to this comic book. i love the fact that he drew some of the pictures himself. the story is a little awkward. a hero made solely by the media, who in reality is basically a stalker. i love this book, and mark hamill!

Pivotal look at spiritual beliefs & values of Baby Boomers
Making up to a third of our population, Baby Boomers have a major influence on our culture. But what, if anything, do they believe spiritually? Starting with a close-up look at the lives of seven specific individuals, the author goes on to examine the various religious and other institutions which appeal to the Boomer generation. The author makes the case that there is a genuine "boomer culture", giving details and examples to prove his point. He also illustrates the trends in religion and the subcultures that are emerging, including "loyalists" (those who never truly dropped out of a religious tradition), "returnees" (those who dropped out but later returned) and "dropouts" as well as privatized religions and alternative groups. The final section of the book discusses implications for the future of our society. Overall, a thoughtful, well-researched book with fascinating details.

Inside and Out, Boomers are Spiritual Seekers
One in every four of them say they can imagine God as a Mother. One in three are born-again Christians. Two in three support the ordination of women. Who are they? Whether you think of them as the Love Generation, the Now Generation, the Pepsi Generation, the Rock Generation, or the Me Generation, they are the "boomers," the baby boom generation of 76 million Americans born between 1946 and 1964.

Many people have speculated about the boomers' beliefs and higher values (or lack of same). Now the details of their spiritual worldview has received substantial factual representation in the new book A Generation of Seekers: The Spiritual Journeys of the Baby Boom Generation (Harper San Francisco). It's a massive study that tells us all we ever wanted to know about the spiritual lives of baby boomers but didn't have the means to find out. The research, involving surveys as well as in depth interviewing, was funded by the Lilly Foundation. The director of the research and author of the book reporting the results, is Wade Clark Roof, who is J. F. Rowny Professor of Religion and Society at the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Roof compiled 80 questions to ask of a stratified sample of 1600 boomers, plus some comparative groups of older Americans. Among the questions: Do you feel God is personally involved in your life? Do you believe God is "within us"? How much do you think about why there is suffering in the world? What happens after death? Is it good to explore many different religious teachings and learn from them, or should one stick to a particular faith? The researchers followed up this survey with an in-depth telephone interview conducted with one third of the respondents. Then they conducted face-to-face interviews with 64 of these people. There followed several group meetings with respondents to discuss in still more depth some of the spiritual or religious issues that emerged in the earlier interviews. Clearly, the study was thorough.

The book contains so many interesting charts and statistics, it is easy to graze among the facts. When asked, for example, "For you, which is more important: to be alone and to meditate, or to worship with others?" 53 per cent preferred to be alone, and 29 per cent preferred to worship with others. 28 per cent indicated a belief in reincarnation and 26 a belief in astrology. These two figures were constant, regardless of level of education. In the older generation, belief in these two controversial areas existed mainly in the less educated. Sixty per cent prefer to explore a variety of religious teachings, while 28 per cent feel it is important to stick to one faith. The greater the amount of education, the greater is the desire for variety in religious exploration. There may be a pattern here.

Roof puts the facts together to present a picture with many complex patterns, and offers some startling conclusions. For starters, the boomers are spiritual seekers. Almost without exception they believe in God. Although they picture God in different ways (and many are struggling to find an image they can accept), they all seem to have an instinct for spiritual commitment, something that will take them beyond themselves. They have, however, an apparent deep division in their ranks.

Roof describes as a "spiritual divide" the split between those boomers who are of a fundamentalist Christian orientation and those who pursue less conventional spiritual paths, from Native American spirituality to Zen Buddhism. He finds several points of divergence in these two groups: the self orientation of the less conventional vs. the Jesus orientation of the fundamentalists, inner authority vs. outer authority, individualism vs. uniformity, mystical vs. theistic, letting go vs. mastery and control, spiritual vs. religious, and being influenced by the "sixties" vs. "sheltered" from that influence. Billy Graham, of an older generation, and speaking from one side of the issue, summed up the essence of the difference when he said, "The locus of the conflict in the world today rises from the battle between the absolute and the relative." The boomers are split over whether the spirit is sought within oneself, where in might appear in many guises, or in outside authority, where it would appear in a more uniform fashion.

The tension between unity and diversity is archetypal. The One and the Many: one God, the Creator, yet many Creatures, all of whom experience a certain autonomy. This tension is at the heart of our country: E Pluribus Unum, out of the many, one. It's dangerous to allow either faction to gain the upper hand. If individualism were to win the day, there's the danger of chaos. If the forces of uniformity and control were to become dominant, there's the danger of a dictatorial, soul-murdering society. It's hopefully possible and definitely fruitful to hold the two factions in creative tension.

Roof himself suggests a possible tension bridge over the spiritual divide within the boomers. For one thing, he found ample evidence that the fundamentalism of the boomers is quite to the left of earlier generations. There are many concessions to individualism, most notably the premise that having a better life is the prime motive for being a good Christian. He concludes that the self-improvement ethic, regardless of the images or vocabulary used, unites all boomers. Self-realization, whether focused through an external ideal, or inwardly through the prompting of one's own heart, would seem to be the boomer's common search. Roof also found that as that search matures toward self-fulfillment, boomers are uniformly committed to sharing the fruits with others. As self-fulfilled becomes self-transcended, boomers become
