We have missed so much as Salinger has gone to such lengths to keep his early short stories from mass distribution. This is a great, academic presentation of what is lacking in the context of what we (the public) have access to (i.e., Nine Stories, Franny & Zooey, etc).

To re-capture Salinger's real gift (the short story) and get some perspective about his contribution to American literature, this is a wonderful volume!

Fr Jerome Bertram's translation of Cassian's De institutis is irreproachable. The book itself is well-presented and ideal for devotional reading, being compact, unlittered with commentary and even including a bookmark -- which is actually a curious thing, since the Conferences would have been better suited for this purpose. In any event, the book was published in a series that is designed to make important works of Christian spirituality available to a wide audience. It fills this role admirably. But scholars who are interested in the Institutes for whatever reason will likely find it disappointing that there are very few references to related early Christian material, or indeed to contemporary secondary literature.

I was inspired by the compilation of bird dog stories found within this book. If you enjoy the excitement, fear, despair, and elation associated with the training, ownership and running of all breeds of bird dogs, you will enjoy this book. The authors help you relive the moments you have endured with your own dogs in addition to helping you imagine the hunts you have yet to experience. This is a definite must read for bird dog enthusiasts.

I borrowed this book from a friend and had a tough time putting it down. Great stories from writers who truly love their dogs. A few of the essays are sad, but all of them allow us to share a part of a fellow dog lovers life with his best friend. Definitely a must read.
