My first introduction to the world I truly love.....
College is Only the Beginning was the required textbook for my freshman orientation class back in 1986. I chose to attend college for the the typical reason....to get a better paying job. This book convinced me that getting that higher paying job was one of the lesser benefits of a college education. Garden and Jeweler discuss all of the personal benefits a person receives from a college education. Human growth and developement as an educated person are emphasized instead of the more practcal reasons most of us choose to attend college.
The book is also an extremely useful guide to succeeding in college with chapters on getting the most from your professors, using the library, staying healthy, getting along with others, studying, and choosing a life path.
This book is currently out of print but these authors have continued to write books on this topic (none of which I've read). However, this book made such an impact on me that I felt compelled to promote it as long as it's available.

Fabulous book! A great read for both skiers and non-skiers
My husband and I picked up this book while at a cocktail party, started looking at the wonderful pictures, and quickly became engrossed in the captivating text. An hour later, we had to drag ourselves away. I must admit that I am not a real skiing enthusiast, but found the anecdotes in this book fascinating. Not only are some of the skiing stories hair-raising, but the stories of Dick and Miggs Durrance's lives are full of romance and vitality. What an inspiration they both are. This book makes you want to go out and embrace the world and all of it's challenges! My husband and I heartily recommend this book to anyone.

Expains why war is unavoidable in the world as we know it
This is one of the best books I have ever read. Adler lays bare the underlying political structures that *guarantee* continued warfare between nations. His clear prose and logical, patient approach guides the reader carefully through the underlying assumtions of national sovereignty which serve as the flywheel for war. He provides a series of definitions for war and peace that provide a necessary foundation for understanding. He asseses both the possibility and probability that the human race will ever know international peace and provides useful recommendations for anyone who wants to work meaningfully on a world without war.

Baseball When It Was A Game--Great Nostalgia
Do you get a chill when you see names like Ruth, Cobb, and Gehrig in an actual box score--a box score from a bygone era that omits runs-batted-in and sometimes even times at bat? Have you ever heard about the "Merkle boner," Walter Johnson's dramatic first world series victory (in relief!), unknown Howard Ehmke starting a world series game instead of the great Lefty Grove and setting a strikeout record against the heavy-hitting Chicago Cubs (yes, the Cubs), Pete Reiser's Dodgers heading toward a pennant, Tinker to Evers to Chance? If so, you'll love this well-written, nostalgic look at baseball the way it used to be (before 1945). Though these first-person accounts were written by leading sportswriters of that era, the personalities of the players come through clearly. Some old-time (if occasionally fuzzy) pictures add to the fun. Highly recommended.

A Diamond Gem
One of the true gems of baseball literature. Klinkowitz's short stories of minor league baseball ring true, without the cliches and gimmicks that lesser writers find so necessary

The best book on stretching I have ever read.
A well-known weight-loss guru has said, "The motivation is in the doing." In other words, to persist at a diet, an exercise program, or any other behavior, there must be some pleasure or reward that comes from the performance of that behavior. This is the difference between Staying Supple and other stretching books. Jerome emphasizes that stretching is something we all do to some extent, whenever it feels good. He outlines an approach to stretching that builds on this natural impulse. The result is a "program" that you follow for the sheer pleasure of it.

The best book on the thinking man's rural life
John Jerome has created a masterpeice, any person who enjoys thinking about physical work will delight in. Stone Work lets us in to the joys and disappointments of his life, that is, for a while centered around building a stone wall for purely aescetic reasons on his New England property. My five year old copy is in tatters.

Your College Experience: Strategies for Success
Your College Experience: Strategies for Success 4th ed by John N. Gardner and A. Jerome Jewler.
This book is excellent for a first semester college introduction to academic life. It deals with the issues students need to address for academic success such as critical thinking, time management, active learning, learning styles, reading, writing, listening and speaking, test taking, library use, computer use, academic resources, advisors, relationships, diversity, stress management, finances, alcohol, drugs, and sex. The book has six parts: 1. Strategies for success, 2. Plan ahead, 3. Take charge of learning, 4. Hone your skills, 5. Get connected, and 6. Know yourself. There are one to four chapters in each part totaling fourteen chapters, about one per week for a semester. There are exercises and guiding questions for a personal journal at the end of each chapter. A highlight is the interactivity provided by the CD-ROM packaged with each textbook. Each chapter has a self-assessment, has exercises from the book formatted to use on the computer and refers to textbook pages, has additional exercises not in the textbook, quizzes, crossword puzzles, and journal assignments that can be done on the computer. The CD-ROM links to many Internet sites for additional information and self-assessments. The book comes with a free four month subscription to InfoTrac, an online library. This book is good for the visual learner, the CD-ROM is particularly good for the kinesthetic learner, and the discussion exercises are good for the auditory learner. There are also supportive materials for faculty who adopt the book, and the CD-ROM is available on Blackboard and WebCT as online course management tools. .
