Soild Effort
This is a solid bit of historical reference. The book is well laid out and easy to use. It is not the "complete" guild but it does cover about 95% of what the general reader would be looking for. The items that are not in there would probably only be looked up by the real hard core World War 2 fan. I would have preferred a few more pictures and maps. Overall this book gives you what you need in an easy to use format.

Good, basic info on the rise of Nazism and WWII Germany
A good addition to any collection of references on Nazism and WWII. This compact book contains not only a chronology of the years from 1933-45 but an alphabetized dictionary containing all the major names, events, military operations(including codenames and areas), etc. If you're at a loss for the name of a person or event from this time, this book could come to your aid. Also makes for quick reading when you have a moment or two, reminding you of information you might have forgotten. Recommended.

Financial & Managerial Accounting

good college textbook, should be cut to 900 pages
Good if you have lots of time to kill, because it has some pages devoted to useless information such as the stupid poem on page 1022 that has nothing to do with accounting. It appears the authors placed lots of "real world" trivia that is boring and useless. Entire page of 964 talks about the reason why Coca-Cola will not do business with Lakers because they signed Pepsi spokeman Shaq O'Neill, it has nothing to do with the subject but the extra pages makes you think you got something for the high priced book. If you absolutely need this book, go borrow it from your public library and save your money. The book manuscript was NEVER approved by a CPA or business owner but a long list of college instructors. It does cover all the basics.

I have found this book to be a okay for college classes
The book does a alright job of teaching students how to learn accounting. It lacks answers to which could definitly help students. The book's main advantage is that it has many real life examples that help students relate to accounting.

Well laid out, not a strain to follow or learn from.
This book was real easy to pick up the accounting basics that the authors presented. The text is broken up with graphic presentations and real world examples which makes it easy on the eyes and the brain. At the end of every chapter is illustrative problems, discussion questions, multiple choice, exercises and chapter problems. When you've completed a chapter you really feel you know the material. Plus there are tons of internet stuff. Worth the money and cheaper than the other accounting book I was forced to buy.

The Rolling Stone Album Guide: Completely New Reviews: Every Essential Album, Every Essential Artist

There is another.
I guess if you enjoy reading Rolling Stone, then this is a great reference. However, if you listen to slightly more challenging, but equally essential music and are one of the ones complaining about the lack of a new edition, then look no further than the fifth edition of the Trouser Press Guide. Available right now from Amazon. But don't expect to read about Led Zeppelin or the Eagles in the TPG.

Essential, But Rapidly Obsolete, Music Lover's Resource
This is the second edition of this particular tome, and for somebody trying to get a sense of the history of rock 'n' roll and which old albums by artists are worth tracking down (and which ones aren't), it's a very valuable thing to have around.

Now, I mention this 2nd edition bit because I first stumbled upon this book sometime in the mid-late '80s, and the 1st edition from '79 or so did great coverage of old albums from the '50s-'70s, but good luck on getting the latest word on John Cougar or Def Leppard or the King of Pop or those other '80s artists we loved so much! Some solace was to be found when a 2nd edition came out in 1992 -- you could now find out what Rolling Stoners thought about '80s albums you had aleady purchased by then (in addition to the '50s-'70s albums, naturally).

Well, I think you see what I'm getting at. This is a great guide to what's out there at the time of publication, but it rapidly goes out-of-date. Sure, you'll find out good information about (yes, I'll go ahead and call him what I know him as) Prince's older albums, but as far as learning about the 348 albums he's released since 1992, you're out of luck. This is a book that really needs to come out in annual editions -- though that would be a difficult and likely unprofitable option for the writers. Too bad -- I may actually be willing to plunk down the money once a year for this thing.

best one out there
Excellent and good fun. The New York Dolls review sums up the tone of this guide nicely. Definitely not for the Top 40 crowd though. If you're one of them, stay away as you'll probably get somewhat insulted.
A drawback is that out of print albums were omitted, which makes the guide incomplete as soon as these albums are reissued. And of course the guide is outdated. Any guide is the moment is goes off to the presses.
That said, we want an update now.

unorganized and poor written book
The book is poorly organized and sentences are poor written. It's way too hard to read and understand the point the authors are trying to make. A lot of run-on sentences, which creates a lot of confusion. The only good thing is the examples given in the book. The price is WAY TOO HIGH.

The Best Tome on the Topic
[This review applies to the 2003 updated version only]
I have been searching, mostly in vain, for a text that will be useful in examining the strategic relationship of business and IT. There were some fine books written in the eighties and early nineties, but very little wisdom has been written since the advent of the networked office and the networked economy. There's tons of e-blather out there, but most was written during the 1997-2000 Internet frenzy that distorted all perspectives. This book is the first to give thoughtful coverage to problems and solutions in the alignment of business needs and IT initiatives. It covers legacy issues, conversion and compatibility, examining typical problems, noted failures, and best-of-breed solutions. It's not full of some egghead professor's theories and paradigms that give new names to old issues; instead it covers relevant case studies to make genuine points. This is not a "how-to" manual, but it is an essential overview. Every CIO should read this, and every CEO should read this and then critically examine the CIO, the IT staff, and its relationship to the business. If you are reasonably intelligent, you don't need to be IT-trained to appreciate most of the authors' points. Recommended.

Managing I.S. is an Part Science and part Art
The authors do a great job of addressing several issues relating to managing I.S. in a Corporate environment. Several chapters were excellent -- especially regarding the people and process sides of the I.S. world. Authors provide clear and concise information and insight. Other chapters are not as good -- for example the Electronic Commerce trends and opportunities are already dated, as they were pre-1999 examples and extremely dated in the Internet world. Book is "pricey" but worth one to add to your library.

Learning Thai through a third language
This book is an enormous disappointment at a very high cost. First of all it is done using a typewriter font that gives it a very low quality look. There is not even one Thai letter or character shown in the entire book, so Yates, et al force you to learn their own newly created language (very few Thais could possibly read or understand the words in this text book. So don't look for help from native speakers).
The cassette tape system of language learning is badly dated and has been replaced by CD in many new language learning systems. Luckily, I did not waste money on the tapes or other volumes of this course.
Any one who thinks they are learning Thai by using this system is sadly mistaken and wasting their time. Absolutely, no system of Romanizing Thai has ever been developed that captures the Thai pronunciation of consonants, vocalics, and tones -- this course comes no where near doing that. Until educators realize this fact, everyone will go off in his own direction and create a third language to learn Thai with.
I would recommend that learners opt for courses that incorporate learning to read the Thai letters and characters correctly starting in lesson one. This course does not even get to that step in Volume One.
I rate the course one star because it might look pretty on the book shelves of someone who has more interest in showing she wants to learn Thai, than for someone who is really interested in learning the Thai language.

Art of Double Bass Playing
This book, while well written and very thorough, is a bit out dated. Many of the examples are very helpful, but much of Mr. Benfield's writing isn't very current with the bassists of today (I can't possibly believe that any orchestra would hire a bassist based "soley on his ability to play solos" and I also can't imagine that there are that many bassists that would play the Eccles Sonata at a major audition). This is a nice reference guide, but by no means the "final word".

Who Can Categorize this Book?
It seemed like an intriguing concept when I read the front and back covers; something like either a James Elroy novel or Sidney Kirkpatrick's excellent "A Cast of Killers." Instead, this story goes back and forth and beyond -- part mystery, part horror story, part apocryphal Hollywood tell-all, part semi-documentation of the dangers of all too-intense hero worship -- and at the end of it, there is no sense of WHICH genre it falls into, thus making it a very muddled and confusing read.
