Noir and introspective thriller
I liked it, great read - hard to put down. I though t the play on music an attempt to catch the "cult" label. Dark and gloomy, but also exciting and believable. A tragedy after Kidd's Revengers.

Len Deighton Meet David Goodis
Gritty, hard-edged noir by one of Britan's best dark crime writers. In the contemporary urban decay of the south of London the narrator exists as a "sleeper" among the poor but noble immigrant population. In this character and locale-driven taut thriller, many suprises await the reader. Russell James, who was Chairman of the Crime Writers Association in 2000-2001, will hopefully become more of a known quantity on this side of the Atlantic.

"Underground" is taut and compelling as the narrator progresses toward completion of his "last big job". As the suprising, ultimate objective is revealed; important questions about personal loyalty, national allegiance, and human relationships are asked, but not easily answered. The Goodis reference goes to the feel of this fine book, the Deighton reference its ultimate genre.

Worth finding and worth reading. Other books by Russell James include: Slaughter Music, Payback, The Annex, Count Me Out and Oh No, Not My Baby.

Wittgenstein and William James
I'm the author of the book, not sure where to advise you of the following blurbs, which appear on the book's jacket:

"Goodman is a very acute and sensitive reader of both James and Wittgenstein, and his book will be of great help to students of both philosophers." Richard Rorty

"It is an absolutely fascinating piece of philosophy, intellectual history, and detective work that establishes categorically the influence of William James on Wittgenstein's work. Goodman's prose is lucid and the overall thrust of the argument is entirely plausible. What is perhaps most powerful is that Goodman puts the two protagonists' stories in a sort of conversation which seems perfectly self evident...but is nonetheless quite original."

Continental Drift

Incredibly thought provoking,beautifully written
This was one of the best books I've ever read. I learned alot from this book, alot about my own life and the lives of the people around me.Russell Banks hits quite a few nerves in his depiction of the American Dream and all the trappings of our overly materialistic, shallow lives. Banks beautifully blends two seperate lives on a collision course with destiny.Human nature at its best and its worst.Everyone should be able to identify with the main character Bob Dubois, a tragic figure who doesnt know who he is or what he wants.Life just happens to him. On the other side is Vanise Dorsinville and her nephew Claude two poor Haitians who seek a new life in America. The misery they endure will haunt you.Banks' knowledge of the Haitian culture was phenominal. What a remarkable book!

Morally adrift in contemporary America
Truly a great book of the past few decades. Continental Drift parallels the lives of two individuals co-existing in North America. The main character, Bob Dubois, is a mediciocre, who flees his drab life in New Hampshire for the riches of Florida. In the process, Banks comments on racism, sex and materialism. In contrast, is the tragic story of a young Haitian woman seeking the American dream. Bob Dubois is a ghost of man morally; adrift in a society that rewards greed, consumerism and de-emphasizes love and committment. The Haitian story reflects on poverty and the moral bankrupcy it extracts. Russell Banks is one of our best writers today. Don't miss this book.

Almost Too deep
This book was suggested to me by a professor (Preston Allen, author of the fine novel Hoochie Mama), whose opinion I respect very much; and thus, I continued reading even when I felt overwhelmed with emotion and was ultimately rewarded with a story that is really two stories. Mr. Banks is perhaps the finest writer I have ever read, his prose refined to the point of being almost too self-conscious. He is a master at making the reader FEEL for his characters. So I followed the main character from the Northeast to Miami, as he fled his boring life and found himself in more trouble than he knew was possible. That first story, surface story, works because of rich writing and some semblance of plot. As a Haitian American, I had a serious problem with the second main story (especially because of Banks' fine style), Claude and Vanise's story. I wept. It was fiction, but I wept. I remembered how I came here as a small boy. I remembered what happened to my mother, but I won't go into that. And I was angry because Mr. Banks is not Haitian. I kept waiting for him to get it wrong--there were some stereotypical things, but they were minor. This is the story I kept wishing someone would write. Both Haitians and Cubans see Miami as a haven from poverty and political oppression in their countries, but America usually sees only the Cubans as deserving of refuge. I am still a bit bothered that Banks is not Haitian, but for selfish reasons I wish every American would read this book. I number it among my favorites of all time.

Very Effective Shotgun Shooting Books
I purchased both of James Russell's fine books; Trap Shooting Secrets and Precision Shooting - The Trapshooter's Bible. After reading and rereading them, I know they have helped improve my scores. After reading the books, I found "my zone" and dusted 123 out of 125! The advice and instructions in these shotgun shooting books are truly powerful. My scores have absolutely improved! Of most importance. I found in the books, is finding the zone and when and where to pull the trigger. I found success after reading these books. In fact, they are so good, I read them a few dozen times, and these are not small books, they are huge in content. There is a tremendous amount of information in these books with many dozens of enlightening illustrations. I recommend you read both of Mr. Russell's trap shooting books, so you can reach your true potential quickly to be a top-notch shooter. The author has excellent works here and I'm most certainly looking forward to his next publication. Shooting is much more fun now that I don't miss the targets like I used to. If your scores are not where you want them to be, these are the books to make you a better shooter!

Luca Scribani Rossi Olympic Medallist & Twice World Champion
Luca Scribani Rossi is sponsored by Beretta and is also the coach of the Australian Olympic Shooting Team. He travels extensively worldwide to International and Olympic clay target competitions and instructs Olympic-team coaches! He endorses James Russell's trap shooting books...

"I strongly recommend shotgun competition shooters to read both, Trap Shooting Secrets, and Precision Shooting - The Trapshooter's Bible. If you read these books you simply can't go wrong. Just follow the steps outlined and you'll leap ahead in the ranking of any competition you'll attend. That's my recommendation." Luca Scribani Rossi

The Books Deliver On The Promise!
The Books Deliver On The Promise! New to trap shooting and 56 years of age, I was hitting only 75 of 100 in singles and handicap, until I read Trap Shooting Secrets and Precision Shooting - The Trapshooter's Bible. On my first shoot I shot 181x200 in singles! My previous best score was only 168, so I picked up 13 targets right away. On handicap, my best was 75, but after reading the books my score jumped to 80, and that was on a very rainy cold day. How much of the books did I read to increase these scores? Three tips! Yes, just three shooting tips! In my opinion, these books are remarkable and I highly recommend shooter's read the books if they wish to see an increase in scores. Here's more! I followed the first phase of the practice tips, tightened my choke, employed the snap shooting technique, as advised in the books, and smoked the targets hard. Without a coach, I found it difficult to improve my shooting. These clay target shooting books is like having a coach by your side giving you inside knowledge and advice. There is valuable information in these books. The books deliver on the promise. I'm one satisfied customer!

Saved my life by opening my eyes to the world again.
Exceptionally well-written book which helped me through a most difficult time in my life. This book is an incredible gift to someone who is grieving. The authors share their most intimate griefs, thoughts, and outcomes with the reader. The book is easy to read. Could not put it down until I had finished it. I have shared this book with many of my friends and relatives who were experiencing loss and grief in their lives. They, too, have benefited by the wealth of information provided in this book about loss in our lives. The book leaves a reader with a sense of understanding about what and how we grieve. I now carry with me one of the most eye-opening thoughts from this book which is: "we are taught all our lives how to acquire, but never to grieve". How true this is. Once we learn how to go through the process, we can then open our eyes to the world again.

Feels like a miracle
For more than a year after my father died, I felt as if I was going in slow motion, while the world raced past me. Time didn't seem to have done anything to heal me, in fact I was feeling worse. My friends tried to talk to me and help me, but I couldn't hear anything other than my own despair. One of my dear friends, in desperation, gave me a copy of The Grief Recovery Handbook. That simple act of kindness changed my life. In the solitude of my own home, without having to try to feel good so others would think I was okay, I began to read the book. Almost against my own will, I began to take the actions and do the exercises outlined in the book. One of the hardest parts about them, was that they were too easy. I began to realize how much I had been complicating the possibility of recovery by trying to use my head to fix my heart. As the direct result of creating an accurate picture of my entire relationship with my father, and completing what had been unsaid or unfinished, I regained the gratitude I felt toward life, and the energy with which to live it. While I have normal sadness and miss my dad from time to time, I am able to sustain a life of meaning and value, even though he is no longer physically here. What happened for me feels like a miracle, but in reality is the result of the safety and encouragement to take action provided by The Grief Recovery Handbook. I am eternally grateful.

Essential before or after losses of all kinds.
"So much of life depends on how well we deal with the inevitable losses that occur. It is wonderful to know that something as helpful as The Grief Recovery Handbook exists to help those who are dealing with death, divorce, and other losses." Jane Seymour, Award Winning Actress, Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman.

"You don't know me, but you probably knew of my Dad, Michael Landon. I have known and been helped by John W. James and Russell Friedman, in seminars and through the incredible process outlined in The Grief Recovery Handbook. Whether your loss was recent or a long time ago, this book is invaluable in dealing with all of the feelings caused by significant losses of any kind." Leslie Landon Matthews, Ph.D.

"I am familiar with the life affirming work of Russell Friedman and John W. James at The Grief Recovery Institute. I am pleased to recommend theri new book, The Grief Recovery Handbook. While we all know how to grieve, completing the pain caused by loss is essential. This book is the toolkit for recovery." Tom Campbell, United States Congressman.

"The Grief Recovery Handbook is an oasis for anyone who finds themselves wandering in the desert of grief and loss. It is refreshing water to a thirsty soul." Rev. Bob Sands, Hollywood, FL.

"I have referred many congregants to The Grief Recovery Handbook, they have all found it helpful. I will continue to use it in my counseling sessions." Rabbi Mel Glaser, N. Brunswick, NJ

"As the bereavement care director for a mortuary, I find The Grief Recovery Handbook an invaluable resource. One of the strong points of the book is its respect for widely varying religious and professional principles when dealing with unresolved grief issues." Agnes Lestico, Lompoc, CA

Children's Grievances Matter
Everyone deals with grief at some point. "When Children Grieve" by John James and Russell Friedman is an amazingly helpful book. After the recent death of a dear friend, I needed help in understanding grief from a child's perspective. This easy to read book explains that it's healthy to grieve, and that adults need to allow children time to heal. "Children need to feel bad when their hearts are broken. Adults should never try to fix a child's loss."
Also, the book explains that grief doesn't just come from death, but instead can be motivated by divorce, pet loss, moving and even a parent's job loss. Grief stems from sudden change in ritualistic behavior. As adults, it is our role to facilitate the child's emotions by helping them discover "undelivered communications." This book teaches adults how to reach out to children and guide them through difficult times. It's a must read for all parents who want to encourage emotional growth and mental wellbeing in their children.

Written With Gentle, Healing Hands
I am a conservative, grumpy, old, Lutheran pastor, vehemently opposed to all things "New Age." I despise the fads of pop-psychology. "Touchy-Feely" advice from so-called experts, who demand exorbitant fees, often makes me want to wretch. So, I approached this book filled with trepidation.

There was no need for my concerned.

Writing with extraordinary gentleness and common sense Mr. James, Mr. Friedman and Dr. Matthews have provided adults with an invaluable outline on how to shepherd the children in their lives through loss, grief and recovery. Every parent, grandparent, teacher, pastor, priest, rabbi, nurse or physician who expects the children in their lives to suffer the death of a pet, suffer the death of a relative, move or endure a divorce will benefit from reading this book.

Do yourself a favor. Read this book for the sake of the children whom you love. It is well worth the investment of your time.

Then, do yourself a second favor, and place a copy of this book in your church, synagogue or public library for the others who will grow by reading it.

A wonderful tool
After reading this book my eyes have been open to the conversations I have had with the children I teach and those that I come in contact with. I felt that this book is one that anyone in any profession could relate to. The book's focus is on how to help our child deal with grief or loss but I feel that it even teachs us, as adults, how to communicate with children in an every day conversation.

During the first 7 chapters the authors focus on the myths that we as adults communicate to our children, and inturn see the myths that were communicated to us as children. Everyone at some point in their life will deal with loss/grief of some sort and also helping someone they love deal with loss/grief. We all must be equipted with the knowledge of how to do this effectivly. This book is an easy reading book that at anytime can be pulled off your home library shelf and put to good use.
