Terrific gift book for any LSU grad
When professional soldier William Tecumseh Sherman brought his military experience and organizational skills to Pineville in November 1859 as superintendent of Louisiana State Seminary of Learning and Military Academy, the seventy students who greeted him found him strict in discipline but approachable and able to put them at ease. The University is now home to more than 31,000 students and it?s doubtful that the chancellor knows many of them by name. A great many graduates, however, will want to peruse this gorgeous volume, both for the well-written text and for the scores of glossy photos. From the Civil War and Reconstruction and the school?s frequent moves to new locations, to black-stockinged coeds dancing during halftime at a 1920 game, to streaking and Tiger Stadium and Mike the mascot, you?ll find it all here.
Six Women's Slave Narratives (Schomburg Library of Nineteenth-Century Black Women Writers)

Why not read 'The Slave Narratives' and get 2500, not 6
If you will read 'The Slave Narratives' you will get to read interviews with over 2500 former slaves who were still living in the mid-thirties, and also their views and feelings about life in the old South. Why limit yourself to just a handpicked 6 stories when there are 2500 out there? Hmmm?
Completely moving, gain a deeper understanding of the past.
Six Women's Slave Narritives is an absolute must for any historian or seeker of truth. You will cry and shivers will run down your spine as you feel the past rush through you with every turn of the page. This is a compilation of 19th century Black women writers in different situations. Interestingly, the typeface changes slightly throughout the book, imitating the possibility of time travel. Some of the women are educated, and some are simply expressive. The editors notes help clarify confusing issues and questions. If you are studying history, women, black history or slavery, you will be engrossed by this heartrenching and soul-moving collection of personal exposure. Be ready to cry, wince, and change your outlook on life.

Good, but not close up
This book tells about young Thomas Jackson as an orphan in Ohio. He went to many different places like his Uncle Brake's. In the end he went to West Point.
As a lieutenant in the United States Army, he performed an amazing win over the Mexican forces. He was an artillery officer, and with his light artillery went toward the strong castle of Chapultepec. The Mexican troops killed or wounded all his unit except Jackson and another man. The two of them with two cannon weakened the fortress so much that the Americans stormed over the castle walls and took it.
The book goes on about his career as an officer and general in the Confederate Army.
I liked this book because it was pretty interesting. I didn't like this book because it made you feel like you were in an airplane over the battle, and not really at the battle. That is why I gave it only three stars.

banal
A truly dreadful book which trots out the most dismal clichés about art in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It has nothing new to say.
appropriate
The book does exactly what it is supposed to do--present focused and simplified theoretical discussions of major issues in modernism. People whose reading already includes advanced art historical theory might be disappointed, but they shouldn't be reading on this level anyway. A good intro survey text.
