Return request of Lost Villages
With the recent interest in genealogy research, I feel this book is an excellent source for all researchers looking for cemeteries within the Delaware County boundries.

I just recently found this book and recommend it to everyone doing genealogy work. The draw back is that it is out of print.

I feel that a reprint would definitely be in order. I understand the first time around was a huge success and see it doing the same again. Who ever would make this decision would be well advised to give it very serious consideration.

A superb book on the location of many old and forgotten cemeteries as well as a great source of lost historical information on old villages and their peoples and lives.

Should be required reading for all Canadian youth.
Should be required reading for all Canadian youth. As someone who began teaching in the Peace River District many years ago, I can state that the descriptions are very accurate, not only of the country, but of the people and circumstances. The best book I have read this decade.

Wake Up Black America!
When I first saw the title, I couldn't start laughing. But when I read it, I knew that the author was serious and I applaud her for her honesty. The book is straight and truthful, but it has it humorous moments.

I enjoyed the book so much that I purchased the revised edition and purchased additional copies and gave them to my friends as Xmas presents.

Indeed, this book has its place in Black History, next to the Isis Papers.

Highly Recommended
VBA is one of those tools I long knew I should be proficient in but never got around to learning. That is, not until I found this book. It makes it easy for a financial professional to quickly come up to speed and start coding VBA within spreadsheets. The fact that the focus is on financial applications means that you learn coding techniques that will be useful on the job. I highly recommend the book!

Great Practical Tips
This book was a godsend. My stochastic calculus background is very strong, and I'm a good modeller/programmer, too. Nonetheless, there are a lot of practical and well-presented tips in this book that have made my life a lot more pleasant. I stopped spinning my wheels, and I'm having fun again. I highly recommend this book!

I also highly recommend Tavakoli's "Credit Derivatives" (Second Edition) for product descriptions and performance characteristics.

When Halley came to Jackson, to London... I fell in love
I loved the song first. Mary Chapin Carpenter sang me and my wife through our courtship. I am English, Tracy's American by birth (and southern by the grace of god). Tracy bought me the book for Christmas. Reading it and listening to the tape reminds me of when we first met. Now we live in Alabama, I look up in the sky, see the same stars my family in the UK see and the song seems to talk to me about that too.

Beautiful
This is an amazing book and tape. The illustrations go beautifully with Mary Chapin Carpenter's words. My kindergarten class loves it as do I. I bought an extra copy to keep at home.

Absolutely wonderful.
I've bought and given away 16 copies of this magnificent book. With its glorious pictures and haunting song, parents love it as much as their tots.

A Passion for Gold: An Autobiography

Thrusting Often Occurs During Orogeny
Ralph J. Roberts has found that a devotion to family and geology can lead to a life well lived and he relates the story of his life well in A Passion For Gold. Roberts spent 44 years with the United States Geological Survey and after retiring, became a private consultant. His most important discovery was the Carlin-type gold deposit. The reader with a non-geologic background will want access to a copy of the Glossary of Geology to help with the few technical sections included in the book [there is a glossary at the back of the book, but it is not thorough enough]. There are a few awkward sentences and some extraneous commas [I think, being the extra comma and awkward sentece king myself], but this is a suprisingly comfortable read considering that most of Mr. Roberts' earlier writings were technical papers. I trained as a mining/exploration geologist and so it was easy for me to relate to this autobiography, but non-geologists should find much of interest in Ralph Roberts' life story. It was on top of one of the mines near Battle Mountain, Nevada that Mr. Roberts writes about that I found myself deciding to abandon my masters thesis in geochemistry and to devote my life to the education of America's younger citizens [I teach earth science at the high school level]. I knew I couldn't help folks did big holes in the ground just for a little gold. I enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone with an interest in geology, but I can't give A Passion For Gold a full five stars because I think the technical sections could have been handled in a way that would have made this book a little more accessible to a wider audience.

This book is gold for those with any passions.
Excellent read with good intermix of personal and professional history. It is inspiring to read as well as educational. Thank you Dr. Roberts.

Good for the basics - especially for people starting out
I wanted to read this book so that I had an understanding of what some of the "folks" were hearing from people they trusted. The thought was: How can I help someone if I don't understand what they may have heard?

Now that I'm finished with it I have a few quick thoughts:

GOOD: The book tries to strike a balance between being technical and practical - It explains some of the "concepts" well, but then goes into specific deatil about "WHO" to call for things (i.e. credit reporting agencies, SBA etc.)

GOOD: The book touches on all the major subjects that people unfamiliar with personal money mgmt trip over. Insurance, home-buying, investing, insurance, credit, avoiding scams etc. are all topic that you MUST understand (to some extent) to avoid financial pitfalls.

BAD: Occassional references to the bible are a nice idea, but there aren't enough of them to have a substantial meaning to a reader. In the end they are jsut distracting.

BAD: The book doesn't have much of a "recommended reading" or additional reading section. Very helpful for those just starting out.

GOOD: Chapters are easy to read during lunch. At 15-25 pages, it is easy to read this books during lunchtime over the course of 2 weeks.

GOOD: Forget the msgr and your issues with him. The advice is solid, and right in line with what most financial planners would tell you (although, it is NO substitute for a professional - which the authors give advice on how to hire one)

BAD: May be helpful to have a good dictionary handy if you are a novice reader.

"Money" is the Bottom Line!
This book covers all you need to know in planning your financial future. I found it to be comprehensive, thoroughly researched, and very well written. There is no substitute for having a good analysis of how to use financial planning strategies. Mary Gotschall's attempt is a 5-star winner. "It's About the Money" is definitely the bottom line in financial planning - a must read.

A Superb Personal Finance Book
This is one of the best books on personal finances ever written for the layperson. In easy-to-under prose, it explains how to amass wealth and how to manage it. An indispensable addition to the library of anyone looking to improve their financial situation over the long haul!

A Hero Husband
Imagine my surprise to find a delightful story when I was expecting a collection of letters. Here is a first hand account of the life of Stonewall Jackson from the person who knew him best, his wife. I have read novels on his life that were perhaps easier to read and made things really come alive but I would not trade the accuracy of this book for any of them. This is a true love story. You can almost see her blush as she apologizes that the letters might be too personal. She wants to set the record straight and give us a glimpse of her hero husband that we would have never known.

Volume I of a good Civil War with excellent battle scenes
Written by CSA' General Joe Johnston's daughter, this first volume is an entertaining novel. Written at the turn of the century by one of the bestselling novelists of the day, this book is full of surprises for the modern, well-read reader. The first two chapters were difficult for this reader to adjust to the early 1900's style; but, became thoroughly enjoyable for the next 600 pages. Set primarily in Virginia, several characters are fully developed from 1860 through 1863. Several women attended to Confederate soldiers in hospitals around Richmond and they view the Battle of Seven Pines from the rooftops; this segment is very interesting due to the fact that the civilians view the battle through a variety of telescopes and interviews with stragglers from the battlefield. The Valley Campaign is viewed at times through the eyes of a CSA private who avoids fighting but nevertheless ends up between battlelines and charges a battery. Like other products of the times, their is a romantic interest that is conventional and suspensful. There is a military injustice which results from love denied and there are vignettes of bitter feuds in the relationships of Lee' lieutenants. Among the best battlefield scences, are the fates of three nameless CSA soldiers caught between the lines somewhere on the Emmitsburg Road. A long, well paced novel that not only gives a good story but also takes you back to the mindset of those who read for pleasure before TV and radio shortened attention spans

Slave Ancestral Research: It's Something Else.
Published in Paperback by Heritage Books (1995)
Author: Mary L. Jackson Fears
Amazon base price: $35.00
Used price: $31.50
Average review score:

Story of personal search makes appealing reading
Mary L. Jackson Fears, Slave Ancestral Research, It's Something Else (Bowie: Heritage Books, 1995) is a good story of one person's ten-year search in Georgia records (mainly Taylor and Crawford counties) with plenty of examples, illustrated by reproductions of original documents. Written in an appealing personal style, readers are taken through Ms. Jackson Fears' trials and triumphs in search of her slave ancestors. Along the way, we learn much about the strengths, weaknesses and even pitfalls of various types of records. Although there are numerous useful illustrations (most of them adequately legible), the quality of their reproduction is poor. This book is particularly useful to researchers in Georgia records, although there is much general applicablity to Southern records in general.
