Picnic Fun for Everyone.....
Duck, Hen, and Goose are going on a picnic. "It's such a lovely day!" They fill their basket with their three favorite foods...berries for Hen, apples for Goose, and pears for Duck, and off they go. "Were going on a picnic!" they sang as they walked across the field." Now to find the perfect spot. This task seems to be harder than you'd think. None of the three can agree on the perfect place, and pretty soon three other forest friends, a mouse, a squirrel, and a rabbit are quietly following along. Each time our trio of friends sets the basket down, thinking they've found the perfect picnic spot, Mouse, Squirrel, or Rabbit jumps in, and eats some of their food. Finally, Hen, Duck, and Goose arrive back at their home. They haven't found a picnic spot, and for some "unknown" reason, their basket is very empty. Everything must have fallen out. What to do? Let's fill up the basket and "Off we go again..." Pat Hutchins has written a charming and amusing little treasure your kids will want to read again and again. Her spare, cheerful text is simple and repetitive, and begs to be read aloud. But it's her bright, colorful, and expressive illustrations that really steal the show. Youngsters will get a big kick out of watching the story unfold and being in on the secret, while their barnyard friends go on their merry way without a clue. Perfect for preschoolers, We're Going On A Picnic is a delight, and a wonderful addition to all home bookshelves.

My son has worn this book out!
My two-year-old saw this book at the library and had to have it (initially because of the balloons on the cover). Since bringing it home, we have to read it at least twice a day. The story is cute, fun to read and the illustrations are adorable. Now, every time we go to the library, he knows exactly where to find this book. We're buying him a copy for his birthday!

A nice book about being the youngest kid in the family
Pat Hutchin's "Titch," first published in 1971, tells of poor little Titch, who has a sister Mary, who was a bit bigger, and a brother Peter, who was a lot bigger. It seems everything his big brother and sister have is always bigger and better than what Twitch has to play with each day. But then one day Titch discovers that something little can grow very big indeed.

If you have a family like I do, where there is a boy, a girl and a baby, then "Titch" is a nice way of letting your youngest know that being the youngest does not always mean that you have the least important role to play. Hutchins tells his story with an economy that will make an impression on any young child old enough to recognize that being the youngest is not a lot of fun sometimes. Even better, Hutchins has a series of books devoted to Titch, which means that once you child is hooked on the character, there are more books for them to read.

An oldie but goodie
Hard to believe this was first published about 30 years go. It is still going strong, and I guess that shows it is a classic. My 3 year old loved it read over and over and now he is starting to read himself, is re-discovering it all over again as HE reads the words.

Simple, but effective illustrations which help move the story along.

Terrific.

My all-time favorite book!
As the youngest in my family, I have appreciated this children's book more than any other. It accurately portrays the feelings of insignificance the baby of the family may have while watching older siblings experience things first. Titch is finally validated when his seed not only grows big, but is necessary to make what his siblings have useful; even more than being equal, he is needed. As a child, I had this book in paperback; recently, I received a hard-cover copy. I am now 26 with this book on my shelf, always ready to provide a smile. I plan to give this book as a gift to any "youngest" I know

Preschool class loved it
I "read" this wordless book to my preschool class and they loved it. It's a great book to do an interactive reading with your child. Have your child read it to you! It's also a good book for teaching colors and transportation.

My favorite non-Seuss children's book
When I was little, I loved playing with blocks. As I got alittle older, I loved playing with Legos. Then came art. And now Icreate computer programs. I've always loved creating, and this is a book about the infinite possibilities made possible through creating and an open mind. It also teaches that what look like setbacks are often opportunities for new creativity. This book is great for anyone creative and anyone who loved playing with blocks.

Brothers aren't always the worst!
This book is humorous yet can serve a purpose for the youngeraged children. This can be included in a classroom library wherechildren with new siblings can read and be able to relate to!

Note to Teachers: this book could be used in teaching word structure such as worse and worst!

I'm Buying the Hardback This Time
Some books just get loved to death, and this book was a casualty of our first-born's affection. Now I'm delighted to find it again for our younger son- it has just the sort of humor a four to six-year-old will delight in, and a gentle moral that any parent will appreciate, whether or not your child has siblings. 'Monster' drawings aren't usually our cup of tea, but these illustrations are warm rather than scary, and the monster motif works well with the plot of an older sibling trying to outperform her 'monster' brother.

good book to learn how to read at a little bit higher level
This book is good for children that are learning how to add and subtract. For example in the book the mom made 12 cookies and they had to spit them in half and then two more people came and then 4 more people came until every one only had gotten one cookie. Also this book teaches that it is important to share.

A user friendly story with great illustrations.
I have got a lot of mileage out of this book. With my own son, it has brought back wonderful memories of his own Grandma's cookies. As a Day Care Provider, I have delighted my day care children with this story during "circle time". They would get a kick out of following the kitty in the illustrations. As an investigations math instructor, I have relied on this story for Grade levels 2&3 to explain the concept of fractions and division. Every kid that has heard this story, for whatever the reason, gives it a two thumbs up.

Fun to Read
This book was one of my daughters favorites when she was little. She giggled every time I said, with great zeal, "And the doorbell rang"! My house has always been quite active which made this story perfect for us. For any parent with a busy life, this book with tickle you to the core. I enjoyed reading it as much as my daughter enjoyed listening to it. Truly a fun read!

HIND SIGHT IS 20/ 20
THESE CUTE LITTLE ANIMALS JUST DON'T KNOW WHAT GAME TO PLAY. THE ENDING IS CUTE. WILL YOU NEED TO EXPLAIN WHY OWL WILL WIN ? I OWN THE 1990 EDITION HARDCOVER AND I HAVE TO SAY THAT THE ILLUSTRATIONS ARE VERY EYE CATCHING. THEY ARE COLORFUL AND GEOMETRIC. LOTS OF DOTS AND LINES ! COOL !

Finding Friends!
This wonderful children's book excites the young reader by playing an age old game of hide and seek with beautifully illustrated animals. They want to play but don't know what. They take turns finding their friends and asking their opinion, all under Owl's watchful eye. The book teaches relative position, logical thinking and elicits participation in the story. My three children LOVE this book-Even though we have read it repeatedly, they now try to "tell" the animals where to search!

A must-have for every child's library.

Great especially if you've recently visited a zoo
My 2.5 year old really got into the spirit of counting and numbers with this book. Especially great if your child likes finding hidden things like in the I-Spy books, or just peek-a-boo type of games. My daughter started asking for this book (which was already one of her second tier favorites) every night (thus elevating it to first tier) after our visit to SF zoo. I have difficulty explaining to her what a hunter is; not that that is central to the plot. We just laugh at the end when he is totally surprised and shocked to see all these animals following him all this time, and his glasses and his rifle fall from his hands and he is running for dear life! We are fans of all the Pat Hutchins books.

One-Eyed Jake

fun plot-- a greedy pirate gets his comeuppance
Pat Hutchins' _One Eyed Jake_ is a picture book about Jake, a pirate who can't seem to get enough booty, even if it means sinking his own ship.

Jake travels with a crew of three-- a bosun, a cook, and a cabin boy. None of his crewmates enjoy working with Jake-- he's mean, cruel, and they are tired of stealing. Each has his own aspirations. The bosun wants to guide large cargo ships, the cook wants to be a chef on a large passenger ship, and the cabin boy wants to be a fisherman.

Jake's ship steals a whopping load of booty from, in turn, a cargo ship, a passenger ship, and a fishing vessel. Each time, in order to keep his ship from sinking under the weight of the loot, Jake tosses one of his crew members overboard to the other vessel.

So, in the end, the bosun, cabin boy, and cook all get their wishes. Jake's ship, however, sinks under the weight of all that treasure.

One Eyed Jake's illustrations are not terribly good, but the text is fun to read, and my son's interest is held throughout. This book makes a nice complement to other pirate picture books, such as McPhail's _Edward and the Pirates_, and Mem Fox's _Tough Boris_.
