The Centurions Shield: Badges of the Lapd
Published in Paperback by Rhs Enterprises (1996)
Author: Raymond H. Sherrard
Amazon base price: $29.95

great reference for the badge collector or LAPD buff
This book provides excellent information about LAPD badges, ID cards, and insignia for the collector. It also covers badges from other city agencies as well as obsolete and prototype badges. However, I thought the best part of the book was the chapter on the history of the LAPD, starting with its days as a volunteer force in the mid 1800's. I would recommend it only to law enforcement buffs, LAPD personnel, and badge collectors.

THE FULL SIZE PICTURES OF POLICE ID'S WILL HELP YOU MAKE 'EM
This book has caused nothing but trouble. It's full size pictures of police id cards and any xerox machine will get you into ANY police station.

Clematis for Everyone is for Everyone
Whether you're an expert gardener, or if you're a beginner like me, it provides great information for all levels. The book was most helpful this spring when I wanted to begin growing clematis. Mr. Evison's easy to follow writing, led me to choose Venosa Violacea, a perfect plant for my sunny container garden. Now that it has finished flowering, I can definitely say that I made the right choice in plants! His directions are concise, clear and complete, and I am looking forward to many more seasons of colour by following the advice in his book.

Clematis for Everyone is for Everyone!!
Anyone growing, or thinking of growing clematis should read this book.

art, love, and beauty
Clemente quoted De Chirico once in an interview with Vanity Fair, "What Shall I love if not the enigma." Clemente's paintings, indeed, exhibit a mysterious charm that invites the viewers into the artist's inner world of Indian mysticism and physcial beauty. Juxtaposed with Robert Creeley's poetry, this volume of fantastic and sensual paintings clearly is a must for all Clemente fans. From Napoli to New York, Clemente has wooed the jet-setters on both sides of the Atlantic, establishments such as the Guggenheim in New York, and me, a Yale College student.

I love this book!
This is a must have for anyone intersted in beautiful and thought provoking material. It is a thorough look at this imaginative artist's work. It will be a source of inspiration I will look to time and again!

infancy gospels
I found spiritual insight in this slim volume by Fr. Raymond E Brown, S.S. "A COMING CHRIST in ADVENT" is a collection of essays on the gospel narratives preparing for the birth of Jesus. As such, it is a commentary of the first chapters of Matthew and Luke. The subjects include the genealogy of the CHRIST, Jesus, as presented in Matthew, the three Annunciations as well as the Benedictus. The subject is given the characteristic thoroughness Fr Brown applies to his larger works. Two themes which I found intriguing are first, that the Lucan Infacy Narratives contain figures from the Hebrew Scriptures (Zechariah and Elizabeth) and Gospel figures (John, the Baptist) encountering each other in order to bridge the two periods of GOD's salvific action. The second theme which was presented in a new light for me is the role of Mary as a disciple of the CHRIST. Fr Brown writes, "In all of this Luke has anticipated a christological terminology that is appropriate to Jesus' ministry and beyond." Jesus defines 'family' in terms of accepting his gospel about the LORD (Mark 3:35; Luke 8:21). Mary's answer in the Annunciation is "Let it be done to me according to your word." Again, from Fr Brown, "The evangelist is descrbing not only one who is consenting to be the physical mother of Jesus but also and very importantly one who meets Jesus' criterion for his family of disciples -- indeed the first one." If you are interested in understanding the Gospel message in the Infancy Narratives, this book will be interesting to you.

Approachable scholarship
Raymond E. Brown is best known for his large The Birth of the Messiah and the two volumes on the death of Christ. Those are readable texts aimed at a more scholarly crowd. A Coming of Christ in Advent is one of a group of slim volumes that collect his essays for magazines. In these essays he shows the same skill for scholarly work and equal skill at making it meaningful to today's Christian - not as Biblical study but as meaningful to one's life.

My favorite section in this particular volume is the study of the genealogy in Matthew's Gospel - the points regarding the women mentioned as all being "outsiders" was one of several provocative points. I'm sure other readers would pick out different highlights depending upon the conditions under which they read the book - there are many possible highlights to chose between.

An Excellent Parenting Resource
This excellent book offers parents solutions to common problems, as well as tips for positive guidance and effective praise. The program seems to be designed to encourage parents to expand on their current parenting techniques, rather than abandoning current practices in favor of a "new method." It boosts parents' esteem as well as giving tips on how to boost children's self-esteem. It sits on my shelf next to "1-2-3 Magic!"

WINNER, 1997 NATIONAL PARENTING CENTER SEAL OF APPROVAL
The following review was done by the National Parenting Center upon awarding the Common Sense Parenting Book as well as the Common Sense Parenting Audiotape with its coveted Seal of Approval.

"When it comes to reading advice about parenting, what we've discovered is that parents like to be spoken to in a direct, common sense manner. No need to use flowery or highbrowed language, just give me some tips and I'll take it from there. Like the name implies, this book and the like-titled audiotape delivers the goods. Common sense tips and good ideas presented in an easy to read and listen to format. Parents mentioned that they really liked the written exercises which serve to help reinforce what you've learned. Here is a logical sensible approach to parenting, featuring good examples that our parents give a thumbs ups."

This book totally changed my life & has all the answers!
There are many people out there that want answers and are not finding them in their church. Many believe that God wants us to worship him every single day and live in our churches. I know of someone that is neglecting their family because the people of the church are his family now!

Confirms all I've "re-membered" in 62 years.
This book opened my life. I recognized Who had been talking to me all these years. I had thought it was the wind, the clouds, the rain, my imagination. And it was. I knew all along and it made me cry. On my seventh reading now I still cry, and of course, smile. I will read this book forever. Thank God Mr. Walsch wrote it down so I don't have to.

Cult Archaeology & Creationism: Understanding Pseudoscientific Beliefs About the Past
Published in Paperback by University of Iowa Press (1995)
Authors: Francis B. Harrold and Raymond A. Eve
Amazon base price: $17.95
Used price: $5.95
Average review score:

very worthwhile for those interested in pseudoscience
Harrold and Eve have contributed significantly to the study of pseudoscientific beliefs in this volume and their previous work The Creationist Movement in Modern America (also highly recommended). This volume is the result of a 1986 multidisciplinary symposium, and chapters were contributed by authors from fields such as anthropology, psychology, sociology, and history.

Of particular interest for researchers is the original Student Opinion Questionnaire that was used in a national survey of college student pseudoscientific beliefs which was conducted simultaneously in three seperate areas of the country. The results of this survey are presented within the book.

The second edition is preferable, as it includes a new chapter by Bernard Ortiz de Montellano on the increasingly prominent topic of "Afrocentric" history, as well as an updated final chapter covering changes in pseudoscientific beliefs from the 80s to the 90s.

Aids in understanding origins of pseudo-scientific beliefs
This is an invaluable tool for all social scientists interested in understanding how people come to accept many things as fact, even when presented with evidence to the contrary. Explorered are the ways in which people are socialized to adhere to specific belief systems; via family, religious and educational institutions... The primary focus is on false belief systems which have origins in fundamentalist religion.

I loved it!
This book is so good, that after 20 years since reading it, I remember the joy it brought me. As a young reader, the Danny Dunn books opened up a whole world to me.

My favorite series as a child
Danny Dunn was my introduction to the excitement and wonder of books and turned me into a voracious reader. In this book Danny once again acts without thinking and creates a substance that will defy gravity and send a space ship (and himself as well) into outer space. Delightful and intriguing.

Ditto the last comments. Highly visionary.
I'm shocked these books are out of print. I totally enjoyed them and I think I read every one. This book especially was practically prophetic from the standpoint of what the military is currently working on. Consider the year written, and it is quite remarkable.

I would highly recommend this book for young kids interested in imaginative inventions. "Creative inventors", so to speak.

I think this might be my favorite Danny Dunn book.
Danny, loooooooong preceeding "Neuromancer", dons a helmet and gloves which give him sensations from an outside source--in this case, a mechanical dragonfly. He uses this technology to his own ends, of course. Prescient sci-fi from the team of Williams and Abraskin.
