Lessons on strategy
This title belongs to the "Classics of sea power" collection edited by the United States Naval Institute. It's a good indicator that the book is worth reading. And certainly it is. Wolfgang Wegener was a German officer at the Imperial Navy during World War I. He disagreed on how the naval war was being fought and expressed himself on papers sent to his superiors. One of the major ideas he had, was that Germany needed to get ports on the Norwegian or French coasts in order to avoid British blocade. The importance of his thinking is that it led to Raeder's planning before World War II. The main text is an essay published after the Great War on which Wegener critiques the way the Navy was (mis)used during the entire conflict; here is where he points out the requirements (a hold on Norway and France) in order to achive a victorious campaign in the future. This edition includes some papers written by Wegener during the First World War, which set the basis for his later work. This is a book of geopolitics and strategy, certainly a must read for all those interested on naval affairs.

Intimate portrait of Ike
Hughes's close contact with Eisenhower allowed him to produce a terrific book. I think this memoir gives the reader a real feeling for Eisenhower's personality. Hughes does a good job at giving you the nuances of Ike: his facial expressions, his philosophies, his leadership style. I also liked how Hughes told of the development of some of Eisenhower's most important speeches. All said, I enjoyed this book immensely and would recommend it to anyone interested in this great and good man.

47 pgs of beauty for the one who loves the sea and our Lord
Half of this book's pages are beautiful 4-color photos of boats (mosly sail, but some power), underway, at anchor. For each, Hughes (a sailor and a pastor) has penned a reflective poem focusing on the Lord and his goodness. Wonderful. I had a copy years ago, lost it, and yesterday my wife found a used copy for me - what a joy. This is a treasure you will use frequently.

Classical Sociology Understood
As a student of sociology, I found the text to be definitive and an excellent resource during my studies. The text offers a clear analyasis that is very readable and user friendly to the less initiated in the ranks. A very good companion for Giddens in the study of classical sociological ideology.

Nice Narrative, Nice Bias
Rick Bass's little oil book, originally published in 1989, is a good read for those who know something about oil production. But it is dated, very badly, by recent developments in the energy sector. One of his "notes" -- page 19 of the SMU edition -- states "I hate coal." This goes to two pages of nonsense written by someone years ago, like me, that could not have anticipated the significance of coalbed methane.

If you read this book, realise it is from a well-head mentality. This oil genius probably has never spent a day underground or a minute to understand why we must mine coal. Perhaps he could run his word processor off the crude pumped into a generator adjacent to his office. That's a patent I'd like to see.

A Geologists Relates
Oddly enough, I was far from home doing field work in North Georgia when I found Oil Notes in a little bookstore. I am a geologist. However, unlike Rick Bass my job was to look for fresh drinking water, not oil. I found time to read his book between logging boreholes and setting wells. By the time I was finished I (with the book) I had a renewed interest and spirit in my profession and in the environment around me. Rick Bass found a way to express in words, the excitement and passions associated with being a field geologist, environmentalist and a man in love.

Oil Notes is a fantastic book, and Rick Bass is an equally outstanding author. I have since read everyone of his books. He vividly defines his feelings and passions in everything he writes about, be it drilling for oil or studing wolves.

Yong man coming of age in the working life
Oil notes struck me not so much as a description of a mans first job and all it entails, but rather a young man beginning his adult life who was open to any and evry new expieriene life through at him. His optimism shown through in that he loved his work and he always felt something better was just around the corner. Underneath it all was also a man coming to grips with how to handle relationships, both personal and professional. He showed his failings as well as his triumhs. To me it is an adult version of a seperate peace. This is a writer that I will read for a long time because as he ages he will describe lifes changes with the same brilliance he has described his lifes beginning.

Apologia Pro Vita Sua

One of the best autobiographies in print....
Written as a response to sladerous accusations of lying and insincerity, Cardinal Newman composed one of the best autobiographies in the English language. To properly defend himself, he develops the history of his religous opinions from his earliest memories, through Oxford movement and finally to his conversion to the Catholic Church. Along the way he gives the reader some of the best prose that has been employed to descrbe religious experience. The book concludes with a point-by-point refutation to the arguments of Rev. Kingsley, that incidentally contains some of the best arguments against Sola Scriptura and other guiding principles behind Protestantism.

After publication, Newman's Apologia helped raise the esteem of Catholics in the eyes of the English people and helped make him a Cardinal. I whole-heartedly recommend this to anyone looking for a moving spiritual autobiography.

After Augustine's "Confessions," Comes . . . .
There are few autobiographies as moving and eloquent as Newman's "Apologia." This is his "defense" of his life's choice to leave the Church of England and "go home to Rome." It's a moving testament to an individual's struggle with spiritual issues and theological dogmas and how they inform our lives. I know of no other spiritual autobiography of such importance other than Augustine's "Confessions."

Yet, for all these superb reasons to read this spiritual autobiography, perhaps there is one "secular" reason to read Newman: His command of the English language. Newman has an excellent command of rhetoric, logic, and exposition that makes him a stellar example of Victorian belle letters.

I'd recommend the Norton Critical Edition over the Penguin edition, obviously, not for the "translation," but for the criticism that helps put the issues involved in context for the 20th century reader.

The Best Spiritual Autobiography. . .
since the "Confessions" of St. Augustine of Hippo 1600 years earlier.

In this book, John Henry Newman, in order to defend himself from (rather unfair) charges of insincerity, outlines the history of his spiritual development, from his beginnings as a liberal thinker, to his conversion to the Evangelical wing of the Church of England, to his ordination as an Anglican priest, to his gradual move toward Catholic thought, practice and worship in the Church of England, to his leadership in the so-called "Oxford Movement" and its call to holiness and Catholicity in the Church of England, and finally to his ultimate submission to Rome.

Whether one agrees or disagrees with Cardinal Newman theologically; whether one can accept his particular conclusions is not important to the enjoyment of this book. It is an honest account of a spiritual journey, written by an articulate man, which should prove inspirational to all persons of faith, and to all on a spiritual pilgrimage.

Beautiful color pictures with good summary of model changes
I really enjoy this book and come back to it for an enjoyable evening read. The book is organized by engine size (and separate chapter for Turbos of all years). The color photos are great. Published in England (printed in Hong Kong) with many photos of rh drive as well as lh drive cars. Does not include as many cosmetic details/differences as Mark Haab's book, but the well-written text covers the major functional changes and then a summary at the end of each chapters lists options, colors, chassis number ids, and the production data for each year and model.

If you are interested in original 911s, this is a must-have!
This is one of the best books about classic Porsche 911s available. It provides detailed information and pictures of the specs (incl. interior & exterior trim, engine, available colors, option-lists and many more) of all 911 series. You want to know, which model exactly you are looking at, next time you see a classic 911? Read this book and you'll know.

Good overlook of Porsche 911 Car History
This book presents a good overview (facts, models, pictures) of the Porsche 911 since its creation until mid 90's. It does include some vehicle numbers and performance data. But it is not a technical manual. I think its a good start from potential 911 restorers, to get acquainted with the 911.

The most broadly useful graphics book in existence.
This book will acquaint you with nearly every graphic technique and algorithm. It's THE book to have if you expect to be involved in more than a narrow range of graphics programming. If your ambition is limited to writing a Quake-like engine, you'll find yourself mouthing silliness like "it covers too many topics, many of which are trivial and unimportant such as the coverage of 2D graphics." This book does not hold your hand; the algorithms are explained thoroughly but you are expected to write your own code. If you're looking for off-the-shelf solutions or a way to cheat on your homework, this isn't your book.
I've owned this book for nearly ten years and have turned to it time and again when taking on new tasks related to graphics - color space conversions, lighting algorithms in 3D, dithering, 2D primitive rendering for print graphics, and many more... it's the best value I've ever gotten in a computer-related book.

It's a excellent book period.
Ok lets see, we have one person complaining that its to hard becuase you must concentrate, another saying its to mathematical. Well I hate to say it, BUT THAT IS THE POINT of this. Computer graphics isn't like 1+1=2. More along the lines of 4(4(3/4 - 1/2)*4)= X. This book presents everything perfectly. A great recommendaiton for anyone 'who wants to learn it' but if your thinking of just a simple, 21 days or don't have time/concentration, don't get this book. I recommend looking into 'other' subjects.

A classic - but not a good starting book.
Most people don't think of technical computer books as potential "classics", but this is one. I would not recommend this to beginners, but if you already know computer graphics, you should have this book. If you can, take a class where the instructor is using this book to teach. You will not regret it. Since it is, in essence, a teaching book, you will NOT find compelte solutions to graphics problems. The authors leave it up to the reader to implement everything in C, and to complete the algorithms. As a basic example, you will not find a complete integer line drawing algorithm in this book. The reader is only given a formula on how to draw lines from point A to a point B East-North-East of point A. You have to figure out how to do the rest. That is why this book is NOT for the beginner, unless you have an experienced teacher guiding you through it.
