America's retreat from victory; the story of George Catlett Marshall

Yes---this is what he said
Much has been made of this. Sen. McCarthy had some things to say about the so-called good general. Eisenhower went ape, as they said then, and the establishment press pontificated---but these words, written by Forrest McDonald, are worth a view. Where was Marshall on Pearl Harbor day? Why did he consistently side with Mao? Read this for a decidely different view from the conventional one.

The men behind Brown & Root
This is the story of Herman and George Brown and the engineering and construction firm, Brown & Root, they founded. From humble origins in Central Texas building roads with a team of mules to much larger projects such as damns, military installations, ship building, offshore platforms and industrial plants. The book is not about the history of Brown and Root, but rather focuses on the lives of both brothers and their political and philanthropic activities. The book shows the relationship between the brothers and an up and coming Congressman from Texas in the 1930's, Lyndon Johnson. The book chronciles the parallel rise of both the Brown brothers' company and Lyndon Johnson in the national and international scene. The book shows the Brown brothers as movers and shakers in Houston politics and how they helped shape the growing city in the 1940's and 50's. A good book for anyone interested in construction as well as the history and poltics of Texas.

A soldier telling it like it was.
General Crook minces no words in his autobiography, a book that gives you real insight into one of the nation's most renowned Indian fighters. A quiet man in real life and somewhat of an enigma to those around him, he had a unique understanding and appreciation for Native Americans and the injustices heaped upon them. In later life, he attempted to use his influence to help better their conditions. Crook never took his biography to a publisher -- that only happened long after he was dead. If anything, his narrative leaves you wanting more detail and less modesty about the role he played in history. The editor has done an admirable job in filling in the missing pieces. An important book for anybody interested in the people who built the West, or in influential military leaders in American history. I enjoyed this book immensely.

The Interwoven Lives of George Vancouver, Archibald Menzies, Joseph Whidbey, and Peter Puget: Exploring the Pacific Northwest Coast (Canadian Studies, Vol 17)

Voyage of Discovery
The story of Vancouver's voyage to the Pacific North West is one of much hardship, persistance and determination. John Naish tells the story of the voyage by cross referencing the journals and diaries of four of the key players in this expedition. Taken individualy the journals are a great read themselves but when used to collaborate or just to fill in blanks it results in a very pleasant read. It takes the reader into the world of 1791-1795 in such a way that we can forget, briefly, what we have today and imagine the world during the times of the French Revolution and the emergence of America as a nation.

This book is for Florida native landscape dummies
This book helps you find out which plant community you probably have in your area, and then tells you how to redesign your landscape with that plant community in mind. It gives lists of plants for your particular plant community, too.

I can envision a second edition of this book with a map of Florida that shows where the different plant communities are, which nurseries in your area carry those native plants that are listed, and other features.

Pierre Joseph Proudhon: his life and work

Brian Wayne Wells, Esquire, reviews "Pierre-Joseph Proudhon"
As the father of modern anarchism, this 1956 biography is an important book to read in its own right. However, because Proudhon conflicted sharply with Marx and Engels early in their development scientific socialism, this book also serves as an important counderpoint to any study of Marxism.

Born in Besancon, France in 1809, Pierre-Joseph Proudhon early on became a critic of capitalism. "Property is Theft" became one of the most common quotes associated with Proudhon. The anarcho-syndicalism of Proudhon is distinguishable from the chaotic nature of the anarchism of Michael Bakunin,(regarded as a co-founder of anarchism with Proudhon) and has relevenace for the present.

In the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939)the followers of Proudhon's style of industrial anarchism were a major force on the side of the Spanish republic in the province of Catelonia and the city of Barcelona, Spain. Thus the biography of Proudhon adds to any study of the Spanish Civil War.

Proximity, Levinas, Blanchot, Bataille, and Communication
Published in Hardcover by Martinus Nijhoff (1982)
Author: Joseph Libertson
Amazon base price: $141.50

Prior Knowledge Essential for Comprehension of this book
For over ten years I had been reading this book--attempting to grasp the vocabulary which is sometimes in French, (with no page of definitions) and sometimes in English. One's task is to first keep track of ideas presented in the first chapter, then with your deep and profound pre-knowledge of Levinas, Blanchot, and Bataille, you can try to ferret out what is the strange, echoing discussion all three of them had amongst and between their works. The premise is that they DID read each other and responded in their own works to each other, but only Libertson gained some intuition of what these correlations might be. An excellent effort, hard to understand, must love exotic French theory and Martinus Nijhoff books. European all the way.

This is a marvelous book for all ages.
I really enjoyed the Seneca Indian tales--Parker makes them come to life and makes the reader able to "see" the story in his or her own mind. The tales are very entertaining and often help illustrate a lesson. Readers of any age will love these stories--from age 9 to 90. As the editor of a book of Delaware legends, I appreciate a well-told story, and I sincerely recommend these.
