The assassination of Henry IV; the tyrannicide problem and the consolidation of the French absolute monarchy in the early seventeenth century

The Assassination of Henry IV
Roland Mousnier's book is the most interesting of all accounts of Henry IV in English (via a brilliant translation). By comparison Buisseret, Knecht and even Mark Greengrass are plodding. His account of Henry's merciless treatment of the brother of a woman who had had to sell her cow to pay the tithe (and then hung herself) is alone enough to make one rethink the traditional image of the benevolent king who wished every peasant to have a chicken in his pot on Sunday. At the same time, the book is highly unusual and needs to be taken by sixth formers and undergraduates with a pinch of salt. He is not really telling you what he actually thinks about Henry, as most would expect from a History book. He is offering the perspective and mentality of a 'good Catholic'. What he means by this phrase is an ultramontane Catholic maniac who would want to kill Henry. He is trying to construct a picture of Henry IV which would line up with contemporary theories of tyrannicide to justify the murder. This is to say that most student readers need to read between the lines of Mousnier's argument to work out their own more balanced picture of the king. It is one of the most innovative and lively history books on the early modern period. It deserves to be kept in print!

A Classic Story!
I have an original 1888 copy of this book, and did research on Elsie Leslie, the original 1888 Broadway star of the play(she was only 7!). This book will delite anyone, young or old. It shows the humanity of a man that really regretted being a thief. A great story, with wonderful morals (something usually not seen or taught these days). THIS IS A MUST READ!

Fighter pilot : a personal record of the campaign in France, 1939-1940

Unputdownable - absolutely brilliant
This book covers the often forgotten air war over France in 1940, which preceded the Battle of Britain.

I cannot praise "Fighter Pilot" too highly. Written by a pilot who served throughout WWII it is a vivid and often moving first-hand account of the tragedies and exhilaration experienced by those of the RAF who supported the British Expeditionary Force.

I have read quite a few books covering the same ground and none come close to this.

A great addition to a great series
James Rubin places Impressionism and the Impressionists at the heart of their times. He not only looks at Monet, Degas and Renoir, but also includes detailed studies of the movements lesser figures to give a clear picture of the diversity of the Impressionist school

One of the few textbooks I've saved
This book was assigned as a text for a poli sci class I took in college. It was great then and is still great now. I refer to it often, it includes everything one could want to know about the judiciary branch (and includes some answers to questions I hadn't even thought of asking) I came here today to buy the 1998 edition, because I have worn the 93 edition out.

Madame Catherine

The Florentine Shopkeeper
Catherine de Medici is the most vilified Queen in French history - ranking only with Marie Antoinette (another foreign bride) for controversy. Yet, as Mahoney painstakingly shows, Catherine refuses to seek our sympathy. Time after time, she fought her own corner, and up to the bitter end, physically exhausted, she strove in defense of her family interests. She saw out five kings (Francis I, her father in law, Henry II, her husband, and her three children, Francis II, Charles IX and Henry III) and was mother in law of Mary Queen of Scots. She sprang from Florence but immersed herself in the fabric of the French state, bearing nine children for the House of Valois. She is associated with some of the worst excesses of the Catholic side in the French Wars of Religion, including the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre, yet it is more accurate to see her as a mediator between the truly zealous Guise faction and the equally stubborn Hugenots. Mahoney's biography is both literate and fair, and ranks with the best of Antonia Fraser.
