The Terrible Truth about Third Grade
The Terrible Truth About Third Grade is super! The main character is a girl named Battabe. Her real name is Jane. She makes up lies to make friends to. But she doesn't have any friends. So eventually none believes her lies. She doesn't do her homework. She even lies to her teacher to get out of trouble. But the teacher never believes her lies. She told the teacher she doesn't do the homework because she reads too much. So the homework was to make a book. The other kids didn't believe she wrote one. She read it in front of the class to prove it. Everyone liked it. A little girl named Susie made pictures to go with it. They showed the pictures to the teacher. I think you would like this book. And don't lie to make friends or get out of trouble. Just be your self!

Like its companion volume, 1B, loaded with sloppy errors
"Pagen" [sic] is misspelled in the Beowulf introduction. Henry II is described in the introduction as having ruled from 1154 to 1177, when in actuality, he ruled until his death in 1189. The more I read, the less I trust what I'm reading. I recommend M. H. Abrams' Norton anthology instead.

dont get me started
otherwise its a great collection of texts. 3 books too.

Excellent anthology with many uses
This is an excellent anthology, with generous selections, lively introductions, and beautifully reproduced color plates. Though published on "bible paper," there is very little bleed-through. It is an splendid alternative to the Norton Anthology, not only for its ample contexts sections and for its loving attention to both canonical and new writers (especially women writers of the Renaissance), but also for its favoring of complete works--More's Utopia, Sidney's Apology, etc. I've been using IB this semester, and though there are, as the (I think excessively) negative reviewer notes below, occasional errors, these are not unusual in massive endeavors. An old game in the 1950s used to be to send grad students in search of errors and typos in the standard literary critical books of the day. I'm sure these will be cleaned up. For now the book works especially well for "survey" courses and for upper-level, specialized courses, when supplemented by another paperback or two, or course packets.

ONE STAR IS TOO MUCH!
I absolutely loathed this book out of all of the books in the series. It spends too much time jumping back and forth between the pioneers and the Native Americans! I did not like the setup at all, to the point where I would rather not buy this book, even if it completes my collection of American Girls Collection books. If you want a book that jumps around too much between two worlds and does not give a good idea of either world, feel free to pick it up. But there are plenty of other books out there on Pioneers and Native Americans, many of which probably make more sense!

An Historical Scrapbook
Whether you are a fan of the American Girls Collection or not, this book is historically accurate and delightful. The story tracks Kirsten's family's journey from Sweeden to the New World using primary source documents like photographs, newspaper articles, letters, and artifacts. Gathered together like a museum exhibit, the information is layered so that readers of different ages and interest levels can engage in Kirsten's life on the prairie, where she lives in a sod dugout and interacts with the local Native Americans and settlers from all over the world. This is a great book for in the classroom or in the home!

Fantastic concept, flawed execution
It's certainly a great concept: explain differential geometry - and and the myriad real-world applications of this subject - by appealing to our geometric intuition! (Those who have read just about any other text will realize that I am sincere, not sarcastic in this remark - the intuitive approach is quite unusual in treatments of the subject material.)

To a limited degree, the book is a success. The first chapter flows rather smoothly, and could actually be used to introduce differential geometry in an advanced high school classroom. I would consider that in and over itself to be a truimph! In places, it's fun to read, and some of the "constructions" (often using three dimensions) are both clever and helpful. And I must confess that reading this book I picked up bits and pieces of intuition that I had missed when reading other texts.

For all of these reasons, I found myself really wanting to like this book; sadly, I ultimately found that I could not. Unfortunately, the intuitive approach starts to break down as the book proceeds. In the later chapters, I could only intuitively grasp and fully understand what Henderson was trying to explain because of previous familiarity with the material; I would have pretty baffled without prior knowledge of the subject. The writing and presentation just does not compare with that in some of the better (if more traditional) texts in differential geometry, such as Manfredo P. Do Carmo's Differtial Geometry of Curves and Surfaces or Michael Spivak's excellent five-volume Comprehensive Introduction to Differential Geometry. If one is familiar with those (or other similar) texts, it might be fun to take a look at Henderson's book. If not, look there first - or at least look there as well - in your explorations of this field of mathematics.

the "pretty helpful " guide
Overall the summoner 2 strategy guide is not a bad guide, but doesnt cover everything. When I buy a stategy guide I want it to have everything not just most of it.In this book there are no strategies for fighting bosses, no strategies for certain areas, and I have found several errors (10+). But the quest guides are extremely helpful ( most of the time). It doesnt even tell you how to build up your characters either (which to me is the most important part of the game!!).

Aircraft in Warfare: The Dawn of the Fourth Arm

Amazon base price: $24.95

Thhe Origin of Lanchester Equations
This is a reprint of the 1916 book by the inventor of the Lanchester equations. Here Lanchester advances his N-Square Law, which has become what we now refer to as Lanchester Equations. The interest of the book is its historical value, as better presentations are to be found elsewhere. There are other interesting portions of the book beyond the mathematics, such as "aeroplane versus dirigible." The book's value is as a historical record of both the advent of military aviation and military operations research.

TOO ENVIRONMENTALIST...NO MYSTERY!
I was surprised at this book. Unlike the rest of the series, it appears to have no mystery, except to find out what appears to be polluting the environment near the Bobbseys hometown. I expected a mystery, not a book devoted in entireity to environmentalism! The twins decide to clean up the river in their hometown, and their dog Chief follows, and gets poisoned somehow. They suspect a few people, but then they find something suspicious in the river, and the book goes in an environmentalist craze after that. Give me a break! I hear about and see enough Environmentalist shows and books. Besides, this was supposed to be a mystery! It wasn't! Save your money for the rest of the series, which is VERY GOOD, and has an actual mystery to it!
