Hemingway Colloquium: The Poet Goes To Cuba
This book stuns. It is stunningly crafted and stunningly written, containing some of Locklin's best work, to be cherished by Locklin lovers and Hemingway lovers. Locklin will take you to Hemingway's Cuba as no one has done before, and you will be with Locklin all the way via his magnetic poetry. The book itself is old-fashioned, a piece of craft rather than a bunch of paper and glue. I recommend doing as I did--buy 2 copies, one to read all night (I did), and one to keep for your grandchildren, so that they can sell it to pay for their college tuition.

This Best is the Best
Hemingway's introduction states: "This book has been edited in order that...boys, as they grow to the age where they can appreciate it and use it and will need it, can have [a] book that will contain truth about war as near as we can come by it." As a result of careful selection and organization, this collection of war stories accomplishes what Hemingway set out to do. As a teacher, I've found these stories useful in class -- from Caesar's notes on his invasion of Britain and Charlotte Yonge's "Pass to Thermopylae" to Aldington's heartbreaking WWI story, "At All Costs." This collection contains the works of fine writers (Faulkner, Kipling, Forester, Crane, Kipling) and historical figures (Churchill,T.Roosevelt). As a parent, I am encouraging my adolescent son to read this book so that he will understand what others have done and what he may one day be called upon to do for his country. This book will one day be rediscovered and reprinted for a modern America once again engaged in a discussion of war and courage. In the meantime, join me in being grateful for these used copies which are available at (usually) reasonable prices.

Readable, enjoyable, helpful
I always liked Hemingway's work, including many of the stories in In Our Time. Hemingway is much deeper than some might think, and I always thought I was missing a good deal especially in his short stories. This book helped me to understand the relationships between the stories and the little vignettes. It also discussed historical background that was interesting, and it pointed out elements of the stories that I had not thought of. It helped me to see many things that were going on in the stories, some of which I sensed were there but couldn't put my finger on exactly. I read this book because I am interested in Hemingway. I also think students and teachers would find it helpful. Some teachers keep teaching Hemingway the same old way, and this book would help them with new ideas. This is not stuffy academic criticism, but a creative work in which the author communicates interesting ideas in a clear way with his reader.

A brilliant work
It would seem to me to be redundant to have the audio cassette in addition to the book, but if you want to go that way, be my guest. This book is one of the most amazing experiences that one can have while reading. I recommend anything that contains this literary masterpiece.

Excellent! One Man Alone and Hemingway's "Code"
Ms. Knott has done two things that few scholars attempt. First, she writes about a popular author's unpopular work. And second, and most importantly, she writes critical essays that are interesting to read. "To Have and To Have Not" is one of Hemingway's more complex novels, with Harry Morgan being one his best developed characters who live within a "code." The book has received little critical attention, but Knott's impressive collection will hopefully rectify that. If for nothing else, read her wonderful essay "Key West Shine" about her trip to Key West and her interview with Shine, one of Hemingways friends and sparring partners. Knott's views and descriptions of Key West and the famous Hemingway haunts were so intriguing that I decided to visit the area on my next vacation. A must read for Hemingway fans!

synopsis
Whether revered for his masculinity, condemned as an icon of machismo, or perceived as possessing complex androgynous characteristics, Ernest Hemingway is acknowledged to be one of the most important twentieth-century American novelists. For Debra A. Moddelmog, the intense debate about the nature of his identity reveals how critics' desires give shape to an author's many guises.

The Old Man and the Sea
The book Ichose to read was The old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway. This book was very interesting to me because this is the first time I am reading a book written by Ernest Hemingway. This novel was a hundred and fifty three pages. After I read this novel I convinced myself that this was an interesting book to read. That is because the author Ernest Hemingway has only a few weaknesses in his novel. This novel had a lot of strengths, the one that I liked was, he did'nt bore his audience with the book, he had many interesting ideas. From all the books that Iread this novel was the most interesting and understandable novel. This book is perfect for teenagers to read because they learn that success doesnt just come by just sitting there, it comes by working very hard. Another strength was that the kid and the old man worked together and showed that to be successful in life, it takes friendship, and working together like a team. Another strength was it had a lot of symbolism. Besides strenghts this book had a few weaknesses too. The part where the old man Santiago spent two days trying to catch a big fish that was the size of his boat. Ernest Hemingway could have made it a lttle bit more interesting by adding a little more action to the novel. The story is overly simplistic. I recommend this novel to everyone that can read. I would not recommend this novel to anyone who likes adventures. And to anyone who doesnt like complicated, suspensful novels. In conclusion this novel taught me a lot of stuff like, never quit, and reach for your goals. I understood the importance of having people help me, and the value of friendship. I recommend you to read this novel, You will understand a lot of things you didnt before. By Gevork Sarkisyan

A SONOROUS AND THOUGHTFUL READING
Acclaimed film actor Stacy Keach gives thoughtful and sonorous reading to the words of Ernest Hemingway in this the third volume of Hemingway's stories from Simon and Schuster Audio. For many listeners Keach, who has read the two earlier collections, has become the voice of the unforgettable author who seemed to be as large in life as he was in literature. The very timbre of Keach's voice can evoke the 1920s, the years that Hemingway chronicled so indelibly.

While many favorites are included in this collection, one is especially probing considering our world today - "A Clean, Well-lighted Place." First appearing in 1933, this is a brief, poignant account of an hour or so in a Spanish café. Two waiters, one older, one younger, serve a much older man who has become inebriated. The waiters discuss the older man's life, and seque into deeper opinions of the value of existence.

"After The Storm" is set in one of the author's favorite locations, the Florida Keys. It is the story of a sponge fisherman and the booty he almost commands.

Well chosen for their variety and reflections of Hemingway's style and ethos, the many tales included in this collection are well worth listening to again and again - especially when read by the estimable Keach.

This one's a must read for all ages!
Beautiful language and fantastic illustrations only enhance a story that has the nostalgic feel of a chat with old friends. I had the great priviledge of not having read the book's jacket prior to sitting down with it to read to my two young sons, and so the story had a kind of magical deja vu effect upon me as I was drawn into the adventures of the Southernmost Cat! My boys (ages 4&6) were mesmerized, & learned about amazing new things like the Bermuda Triangle & the running of the bulls. I don't want to spoil the fun, so I won't say too much about the catch. What I will say is that this book is a must read for fans of American Literature, and has earned a place of honor on my family's bookshelf!

Absolutely phenomenal - a must read for Hemingway fans!
This "biography" of Ernest Hemingway is the most insightful into the author's life of any I have read. It is absolutely perfect in its presentation of the personal accounts of those who knew Ernest Hemingway. Because of the use of the personal accounts (actual quotes dictated to the author) of those involved, one feels that he truly understands Hemingway and his work through the defining decades of his life. From his life in Oak Park, IL to his last days in Utah, Brian fills the text with exuburance and an uncanny abiltity to bring the reader closer to the subject. The quotes are masterful!
